Fresh violence against Christians in India’s Orissa region
by Dibin Samuel
Posted: Monday, July 14, 2008,
While Christians in Orissa are still recovering from the aftermath of Kandhamal Christmas onslaught, reports are emerging of fresh violence.
Nearly 100 HJS activists falsely accused the Christians of torturing and forcing villagers to accept or else be killed.
False witnesses were also reportedly brought before a television channel, alleging they were physically assaulted or threatened into converting to Christianity.
In an interview for the same TV channel, Bijoy Kumar Das, District Superintendent of Police denounced these allegations as false and baseless.
“There is neither any complaint lodged so far in this regard nor they have found any such evidence of forcible conversion, threat or allurement in the area during a police inquiry,” he said.

ATTACKS ON CHRISTIANS IN ORISSA
The history of violent attacks on Christians in Orissa is not new. Ever since the legislature of Orissa enacted Orissa Freedom of Religion Act in the year 1967, the onslaught on Christians by the upper caste Hindus steadily got momentum and was at peak in December 2007 when hundreds of residential houses, schools, churches and such other buildings of the Christian community of Kandhamal district of Orissa were destroyed mercilessly by the violent mobs of RSS, Bajrang Dal, VHP etc.

In the year 1984 around 94 houses, schools, hostel buildings, churches were burnt and since then systematic attacks have continued almost every year. On 22nd June 1999, an Australian priest Rev.Graham Stains and his two sons Timothy and Stephen were burnt alive and killed by the Hindu fundamentalists. The last attack was in December 2007 during Christmas festival.

The man behind all violent attacks on Christians in Orissa for the past four decades is Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati of Sangh Pariwar Through his hate campaign and lies he has been poisoning the minds of the simple people in the villages.

VIOLENT ATTACKS OF 2007

The local Christian community organizations of Bamunigaon village of Kandhamal district of Orissa obtained necessary permission for holding Christmas celebration. It was at that point of time when a Bandh call was given by the Sangh Parivar on 25th and 26th December. The miscreants ransacked and destroyed all Pandals, stage etc. made by the Christians on the main road of Bamunigaon village for celebration of Christmas. Swami Laxmananda landed up at the spot in his jeep and ordered his security guards to disperse the crowd that had gathered on the road. Trouble started when the guards beat up the people with sticks to make way for Swami’s jeep. Somebody from the mob pelted stone on Swami – and that was enough. The Swami made lot of hue and cry, lodged complaint with Police, got himself admitted in the hospital and ultimately a message was spread all over Orissa – Christian attacked Hindu religious leader Swami Laxmananda. From that very moment onwards, thousands of saffron-brigade goons tookover the law and administration, as was evident in Gujarat after Godhra carnage in 2002.

ENQUIRY COMMISSION
The Government of Orissa appointed Enquiry Commission under the Chairmanship of Justice Basudev Panigrahi, a retired judge of the Orissa High Court to enquire into and report in respect of the incidents of violence and recommend remedial measures.

PROCEEDINGS OF COMMISSION IN THE FIRST SITTING AT PHULBANI
The Commission held its formal sitting at Bhubneshwar in May 2008 and thereafter the first sitting for witnesses commenced at Phulbani town from 14-6-2008.
On the very first day of hearing, Justice Panigrahi addressed the Advocates present in the proceeding- to convey the message of the State – that he has already visited all the riot affected villages, that he has already met the victims and has already made up his mind and that he would hold enquiry at four places and complete the enquiry within three months as per notification by calling five to six witnesses from every village. “During my visit to the riot affected villages I have noticed that the Christian have brutally attacked an 84-year old holy Swami Shri Laxmananda and have destroyed the houses of Hindus. In some villages I have also noticed that certain Christians have also been attacked…”

While he went on speaking, HRLN Advocate Mr. Shri Subramaniam Iyer, who was representing the Archibishio of Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack protested, “I am sorry to interrupt. I must remind the Hon’ble Commission that the Commission has been appointed by the Government under the provisions of the Commission of Enquiries Act to inequire into the facts and circumstances that led to the communal flare-up in Kandhamal district. We, all the advocates, are here to assist the Hon’ble Commission to find out the true facts. We may be representing different communities but we are officers of the Commission. As far as the Commission is concerned, we have to look at the victims as victims of violence rather than branding them as Christian victims or Hindu victims. We must identify the victims as victims of violence irrespective of their religion and we must be fair and impartial to all and must strive to achieve the ultimate objective of the Commission. I may point out that the ultimate objective of the Commission is to establish peace and communal harmony in the region. The Commission is required to submit its report to the government with recommendations suggesting remedial measures for preventing recurrence of such communal in future.” The first day’s proceedings were concluded.

Next day again Justice Panigrahi reiterated that he would call five to six witnesses in a day for examination and also complete their cross-examination and that in four days he would complete examination of twenty witnesses. Once again Mr. Iyer objected. “As I said yesterday, we must be fair and impartial to everyone and all those who have filed affidavits must be heard” said Mr.Iyer. “How many affidavits are there”? Asked Justice Panigrahi. “There are in all 473 affidavits” said Mr.Iyer. "What!! 473 affidavits? And you want me to call all 473 persons? “Yes. All 473 persons must be called because they are victims of riots” replied Mr.Iyer. “You see, Mr. Iyer, if I have to call all 473 persons, I don’t think I will be able to complete enquiry before two years” said Justice Panigrahi. Mr. Iyer replied, “I have already said that we must be fair to all. The Commission is here to do justice to all. The Commission can’t pick and choose the persons. While I do agree that time is the essence in the administration of justice but time can not be adhered to at the cost of justice. Here we have received only 473 affidavits. I am associated with Nanavati Commission in Gujarat where we have more than 45,000 affidavits. Nanavati Commission was appointed way back in the year 2002 and still it is going on.” Finally he agreed to call everybody.

WHAT THEY' SAID? The evidencing of the witnesses from Sangh Parivar had the same story to tell. That the Christians have themselves burnt down their houses, churches, schools etc. and after burning all these, they attacked the Hindus. That the Christian missionaries are converting poor tribal Hindus to Christianity with the help of their foreign fund’ etc. If the opening remarks of the Commission were any indicator, the Government objective was only to put the stamp of approval on what the witnesses have said against the Christians to be the truth.

While concluding the proceedings on the last day of the first session of sitting at Phulbani Justice Panigrahi thanked everybody. “Now since the commission has already commenced the proceedings, let us hope that communal harmony is restored. I would request the representatives of both the communities to convey a word of restraint to their respective community and maintain peace.” Mr. Iyer immediately responded. “From my side I assure the Hon’ble commission that I shall convey the message to the community and undertake that the Christians shall not indulge in violence and shall maintain peace. Similar undertaking I expect from my learned friends too.”
Justice Panigrahi immediately interrupted…“It goes without saying that the Hindus shall also maintain restraint, both in letter and also in the spirit.”
On the very next day it was reported in the local newspapers that the Shankaracharya of Puri had called upon all Hindus to take arms and come on streets to save the Hindu religion. An application has been made to the Commission to recommend to the government to grant sanction for prosecuting Shankaracharya under section 153A of IPC.
The Commission is scheduled to undertake further hearing from 18th to 22nd August 2008.

Christians condemn violence, death of VHP leader - Hope peace will be maintained in Orissa

The All India Christian Council is deeply concerned at the attack on an ashram near Tumiliband in Kandhamal District of Orissa last night in which the Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Lakshmanananda Saraswati and four of his associates were killed.

This is the latest of a series of attacks in recent months by political extremists which have left dozens of policemen and others dead in several districts of Orissa.

We are also concerned at the immediate outbreak of communal violence against innocent Christians in nearby districts. Early reports suggest at least one prayer hall in Sudergarh has been burnt, the van of some Catholic Nuns destroyed and the sisters themselves injured.

We urgently appeal to the Chief Minister and the Governor of Orissa and at the Indian Home Minister Mr. Shivraj Patil to take whatever steps are require to maintain peace and harmony in all areas of states, to prevent further attacks on Christians and to bring to book those responsible for the death of Lakshmanananda Saraswati and his associates.

The Christian community abhors violence, condemns all acts of terrorism and is against groups of people taking the law into their own hands.

We have had major differences with the dead VHP leader. It has been the hate campaigns of the VHP and Sangh Parivar which led to untold misery to Christians in the violence last Christmas. Refugees from that violence are still living in government camps in Barakhama under miserable conditions. But we wish peace to everyone.
We pray for peace in Orissa, one of the most undeveloped states in the country,

PRESS RELEASE
24 August, 2008

I, the Archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar, on behalf of the Christians of Orissa, particularly the catholic Christians, strongly condemn the dastardly attack and violent killing of Swami Laxamananda Saraswati and five of his associates. We the Christians abhor violence and condemn all acts of violence and terrorism and are against all groups of people taking the law into their own hands. We condole the death of Swami Laxamananda Saraswati, a religious leader and his associates. At this critical juncture I appeal to all for peace and communal harmony. We want good relationship with all the communities with whom we live.

We are also concerned at the immediate outbreak of communal violence against innocent Christians in nearby districts. Early reports suggest that least one prayer hall in Sundergarh District has been burnt and vehicle belonging to Daughters of the most Precious Blood has been
burnt near G. Udayagir.

We, therefore, strongly condemn the death of Swami Laxamananda Saraswati.

Secretary General of the aicc, Dr John Dayal, said that Saraswati’s murder has already sparked attacks in neighbouring districts.

“We’ve heard that at least one prayer hall in Sudergarh was burnt, the van of some Catholic nuns was destroyed, and the sisters were injured.”

The police have confirmed that churches and prayer halls were attacked at some places. “There were reports of attacks on religious places. We are keeping a strict vigil,” a spokesperson said.

While Maoist rebels are the major suspects, Hindu radicals are using the death as an excuse to increase their attacks on Christians in Orissa. The swami was an outspoken critic of tribals and lower caste Indians becoming Christians, and last December, a similar attack on him incited severe repercussions that resulted in numerous Christian deaths and dozens of burned churches and caused hundreds of believers to flee for their lives into the jungles.

The swami’s ultimate goal was to have India declared a “Hindu nation,” and to halt the growth of both Christianity and Islam on the subcontinent.

The GFA correspondent reported that in the wake of his death, “several church buildings are destroyed, Christian houses are torched and Christians under attack.”

Churches, chapels, a social centre and a pastoral centre as well as vans belonging to nuns have been destroyed. A new wave of violence has followed the assassination of Swami Laxanananda, the man behind the war against Christians that left three people dead and saw 13 churches burnt last December in Orissa.

Bubaneshwar (AsiaNews) – Shouting “Kill Christians and destroy their institutions,” thousands of Hindus from the militant Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) stormed the Pastoral Centre of the diocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar, laying it waste. The same fate was visited upon a social centre in K. Nuagam, a church and parish residence in Kandhamal, and a chapel in Sundergarh. A van owned by the Sisters of Mother Teresa was attacked as it made its way to Bhavanipatni whilst another that belonged to the Daughters of the most Precious Blood was burnt in Udayagir.

On 25th morning onwards violent mobs made several attempts to enter the compounds of Catholic Church and Archbishop’s house with a view to attack. But they could not enter because of the police presence. They threw some stones at the guest house of Archbishop’s House, damaging some windows.

Another group of fundamentalists entered presbytery in Duburi parish, managed by the SVDs and destroyed and damaged property. Two priests of the said parish are missing.

In Balliguda they caught hold of two hostel boys and tonsured their heads.
Mr. Jamaj Pariccha, Director of Gramya Pragati, is attacked and his property, vehicle etc. damaged, burnt and looted.
One Baptist Church in Akamra Jila in Bhubaneswar is also damaged. (There are also other Christian institutions like St. Arnold’s School (Kalinga Bihar), NISWASS have suffered some damage
In Boudh also a group of fundamentalists entered the parish and destroyed things and property.

Situation seems to be very serious. People are fleeing to safer places. But nothing seems safe.

Now the fear is when people return after the cremation there may be similar or even more violent attack. Cremation will be most likely in Chakapado.

Orissa bandh marred by violence

Over a dozen churches and prayer halls were torched, police outposts attacked and about 15 vehicles damaged in the communally sensitive Kandhamal district, where 85-year-old Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four others were gunned down on Saturday night, police said.
Two churches were damaged in Phulbani town and two police outposts were ransacked near Nuagaon, while churches and prayer halls were attacked in Baliguda, Barkhama, Tikabali and Udaigiri areas.

Activists accompanying body of the slain leader defied curfew and held processions passing through Phulbani town, attacking churches, houses and vehicles of one community, they said.

Meanwhile, the administration imposed a curfew in Kandhamal and banned gatherings elsewhere in the state as mobs attacked churches, convents and other Church institutions to protest the killings.

Police prevented a mob three times from entering the Catholic cathedral in Cuttack, about 20 kilometers north of Bhubaneswar. Some youths stoned the Missionaries of Charity nuns’ vehicle as they rode in it to attend Mass. However, local people came to their rescue and escorted them back to their convent, Sister Suma, their regional superior, told UCA News.

Jeeban Sangram, a journalist, called the situation “very grim, as the mobs move around like mad people.” He told UCA News on Aug. 25 that media persons could only watch helplessly as the mobs went around looting and burning.

Hindu mobs attacked churches and vehicles in several parts of Orissa Monday as a statewide shutdown called by the VHP to protest the killing of a leader of the organisation came into effect

Bargarh (Orissa): A Catholic nun was burnt alive by agitators in Orissa today. The nun was working in an orphanage and it was also burnt down in the attack.

Hindu mobs attacked churches and vehicles in several parts of Orissa Monday as a statewide shutdown called by the VHP to protest the killing of a leader of the organisation came into effect impacting rail and road traffic.

**Mgr Raphael Cheenath, Verbite, archbishop of Cuttack-Bubaneshwar (Orissa), described to AsiaNews the situation of the faithful under his care after two days of attacks by radical Hindus against churches, social and pastoral centres, parishes and convents.

“Father Thomas, director of our pastoral centre, is hiding in the forest,” the archbishop said. “From there, tears in his eyes and sorrow in his heart, he saw it go up in smoke. Just before the attack he phoned me and I told him: ‘Pray and be vigilant.’ But when he saw mobs of people coming towards the centre he had to flee for his life. The pastoral centre had cost more than 15 million rupees.”**

And there is even more tragic news streaming in. Fr Ajay Singh, Director of Jan Vikas, Social Action Initiative of the Archdiocese of Bubhaneswar reports that Sr Meena has been allegedly raped at the Pastoral Centre by the arsonists. Pastoral Centre which had some how escaped vandalisation last time around now stands completely destroyed and the Director Fr.Thomas Chellan is hospitalised with serious head injury.

Christian homes, Christian headed NGOs and Community Based Organisations, businesses are all being systematically being attacked and destroyed. I had mentioned that there was a new churning in the hills of Kandhamal. The attacks have come even before our hapless Christians have had the time to gather their wits together. Everyone is wondering Where is He Our `Great Big Wonderful God` . We need to see His mighty deeds as of old. And Moses to hold up his hands as the battle rages. And all of us can lend the support of out little hands to His mighty arm. Sure we shall fold them in prayer but also raise them in protest, with those hands send our protest letters to the authorities, register our protest at the Indian Embassies (in your countries), the UN, UNCHR, EU and in whatever other ways the Spirit inspires us.
