Bubaneshwar (AsiaNews) – A Catholic nun nay have been burnt alive by a group of Hindu fundamentalists who stormed the orphanage she ran in the district of Bargarh (Orissa). Fr Ajay Singh, from the diocese of Bubaneshwar, was however unable to confirm the report.

By contrast, a nun at a Bubaneshwar’s social centre was raped by a group of Hindu extremists before the building housing the facility was set on fire. This has further extended the already long list of violent anti-Christian acts.

Thanks for bringing these atrocities to our attention. May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Their deaths not have been in vain. May God protect the Church in India.

Is there some practical way we can help, in addition to offering our prayers? Are there relief funds being set up to rebuild the destroyed property? These places need not just to be rebuilt, but rebuilt bigger and better than before!

😦 This is truly shocking 😦

I am going to sound so utterly stupid and naieve and ignorant but I had no idea that catholic religious people were being killed like that in places around the world. 😦 I thought the world liked catholic missions.

Dear Seekrz
Thanks for the concern. I know that you must be praying hard.
The only way people can help is to get assistance by way of solidarity, calling the Archdiocese as I have done, comforting them and getting media to report fairly. In the end the biased media of India will put down the Hindu version of events and only the Catholic media will report on this which no one even in India has access to.
God bless

From today’s Liturgy of the Hours:

Prayers and Intercessions

Christ the Lord lives among us and we are his adopted people. Let us praise him and offer him our prayers:
  • Lord, listen to us and show your greatness.
Lord, king and ruler of the nations, guide all peoples and all who exercise power
that they may work together for the common good, according to your laws.
You conquered our captivity and took it prisoner:
restore to freedom our brethren who are captive in body or in soul.
May our young grow up irreproachable in your sight
and may they wholeheartedly follow you when you call.
Make children follow your example
and move steadily forward in wisdom and grace.
Take up the dead into your eternal kingdom
where we hope one day to rule at your side.

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Dear Phoenix
Thanks for your prayers. In all my calls to Orissa and to several priests I just ask - How are you coping? and most of the time they seem to have faith that if it is the Lords work he will preserve it and make it grow.
But things are bad on the ground, please keep praying
God bless
Derrick

Hindus torch Christian homes and churches, three die asphyxiated By Nirmala Carvalho
Father Dibakar Pariccha, from Justice and Peace’s Bubaneshwar chapter, has drawn up a list of violent episodes (reported elsewhere). He described to AsiaNews the urgency of the situation, saying that “throughout the state, especially in the district of Kandhamal, many families are without food, shelter and in some cases even clothing. Last night many people were hiding in the forests out in the open as heavy rain poured out of the sky. Conditions for children and women are indescribable: children cannot go to school and are traumatised by the violence; women are exhausted by the destruction of their homes and families.”

Hundreds of police were deployed in three towns in Orissa’s rural Kandhamal district to end two days of violence in which suspected Hindu extremists set fire to an orphanage run by Christian missionaries, burning a woman to death.Several children were also injured in the attack on the orphanage.

Four other Christians also died inside buildings torched by suspected Hindu extremists in violence that erupted after the killing on Saturday of one of their leaders, Swami Laxamanananda Saraswati.

Italy’s Foreign Minister Franco Frattini condemned the “grave and inexcusable acts of violence” on behalf of the Italian government.

****“Our Women religious have given their lives to empower the same people who are now assaulting them,” he said. “Our nuns have given dignity to these people through the social ministry of the Church and today they are brutalised by this senseless mob. This is diabolical.”
Mother Teresa’s successor Sister Nirmala Joshi says that one cannot be disciple of Christ without paying the price, on the Cross.

SHOCKING NEWS FROM INE

**In a high level meeting of Orissa Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), VHP (Viswa Hindu Parishad), Bajrang Dal and RSS (Rastriya Swayam Sevak Sangh) held in Rourkela on 24th August, they have made a firm resolution to continue the work of demolishing all the Christian Institutions and Churches in the State, especially in the district of Sundargarh. They have planned to start the attacks in the western Orissa from Wednesday (27th August). **This is the message given to us by Mr. Patric Minz – a police who went in civil dress to the meeting.

Our Confrere, Fr. Edward Secqueira, SVD in Padampur (Bargarh District) was very badly beaten up and his condition is very serious. He is in Padampur Hospital.

(1) Another confrere, Fr. Simon Lakra and another Jesuit priest who was with him in Duburi, were chased, caught and taken by the miscreants. No further news about them.

(2) The Catholic Church of Madhupur and the HM’s Convent in Madhupur were set on fire today (25th). The Father with the hostel boys and the sisters with the Hostel Boys have run away into villages and are hiding in the people’s homes.

(3) The Pastoral Centre, at Konjamendi, a huge building of the Archdiocese of Bhubaneswar is totally demolished by blasting it with bombs,

(4) Jana Vikas Kedra, a social service centre at Konjamendi was also set on fire.

(5) The director of the Pastoral centre, Fr. Thomas Chellan and Sr. Meena Barwa, HM who ran away and hid themselves in a Catholic house, were caught today and beaten up thoroughly; Fr. Thomas Chellan was stripped and paraded and both of them are handed over to the Police.

(6) Few Village Churches in Rourkela diocese have been torched.

Please advise our Bishops and Major Superiors to seek the help of the All India Bishops and in solidarity with the suffering of Khandhamal District, they could call for a close of all the educational institutions in the country. The earlier we do the better we can spend time can get the sympathy and the support of the non-Christians in the State.

Thanking you and requesting your prayers,

Fr. Joseph Amalan, SVD
