A specific stat I found interesting was that there were 73 applications to enter seminary but only 34 were accepted. Is this only due to lack of qualifications on part of the applicants or is any of it due to lack of resources/space of the FSSP seminaries?

I think they are selective with who they accept. If you look at the description of the schedule at the seminary in the US you will see that they are quite serious about it. They are very serious about having devoted priests that have some spiritual depth. I believe the site is fssp.com

Since they have only 2 seminares, the have to limit the number they accept. If they do increase the number of seminaries (which will probably not happen for awhile if at all), the number may increase.
