Last night at church, the Pastor of the church we attend started talking about eschatology and his belief on the pre-trib rapture. One of the things he used to back up his claim was an early writing by Ephrem the Syrian “For all the saints and elect of God are gathered, prior to the tribulation that is to come, and are taken to the Lord lest they see the confusion that is to overwhelm the world because of our sins.” He also used the old Jewish customs of marriage as a revelation. That as we are the bride of Christ that, in the days of Moses, a bride was bought at a price (Christ’s price paid for us), that around midnight the groom would snatch his bride and take her to the bridal room and they would stay there for 7 days (rapture), and then after the 7 days they would reunite with everyone for the dinner celebration (The Celebration). He even went on to say that there are many other “valid opinions, however those opinions are wrong”. He also went on o say that at Sunday’s service he will put a name on the Anit-Christ, and a time where is he 100% convinced of the time of this “pre-trib rapture”. Needless to say, I felt pretty disturbed and aggravated after this service.:dts:
  • Ephrem the Syrian
Does anyone have any insight on this writing?
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17
This was his primary scripture in this particular service.

Don’t these Scriptures plainly say that the gathering of the elect will be **after great tribulation?
**
  • Matthew 24: 29-31
29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
  • Mark 13: 24-27
24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; 25 the stars of heaven will fall, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then He will send His angels, and gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest part of earth to the farthest part of heaven.

The whole time during this service, 2 Thessalonians 2: 1-4 was in my mind.
  • 2 Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, 2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come. 3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
Also, why take an early Christian writing to prove your point - yet reject many other early Christian writings that support doctrine that he doesn’t agree with? 🤷

If anyone has any information on the writing of Ephrem the Syrian on this topic, I would like to know. Thank you.

Umm… by ‘pastor’, you don’t mean ‘Catholic priest’, right?
One of the things he used to back up his claim was an early writing by Ephrem the Syrian
Actually, this is from a 7th-century Latin text by Pseudo-Ephrem. That is, it was not written by Ephraim, but the author took his name and attached it to this text. To see this in context, let’s look at the section that this is from:
We ought to understand thoroughly therefore, my brothers, what is imminent or overhanging. Already there have been hunger and plagues, violent movements of nations and signs, which have been predicted by the Lord, they have already been fulfilled (consummated), and there is not other which remains, except the advent of the wicked one in the completion of the Roman kingdom. Why therefore are we occupied with worldly business, and why is our mind held fixed on the lusts of the world or on the anxieties of the ages? Why therefore do we not reject every care of worldly business, and why is our mind held fixed on the lusts of the world or on the anxieties of the ages? Why therefore do we not reject every care of earthly actions and prepare ourselves for the meeting of the Lord Christ, so that he may draw us from the confusion, which overwhelms all the world? Believe you me, dearest brother, because the coming (advent) of the Lord is nigh, believe you me, because the end of the world is at hand, believe me, because it is the very last time. Or do you not believe unless you see with your eyes? See to it that this sentence be not fulfilled among you of the prophet who declares: “Woe to those who desire to see the day of the Lord!” For all the saints and elect of God are gathered, prior to the tribulation that is to come, and are taken to the Lord lest they see the confusion that is to overwhelm the world because of our sins. And so, brothers most dear to me, it is the eleventh hour, and the end of the world comes to the harvest, and angels, armed and prepared, hold sickles in their hands, awaiting the empire of the Lord. And we think that the earth exists with blind infidelity, arriving at its downfall early. Commotions are brought forth, wars of diverse peoples and battles and incursions of the barbarians threaten, and our regions shall be desolated, and we neither become very much afraid of the report nor of the appearance, in order that we may at least do penance; because they hurl fear at us, and we do not wish to be changed, although we at least stand in need of penance for our actions!
(I pulled this from the Wiki page on the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ephrem.)

Notice that he’s really talking to the people to whom he’s preaching. In other words, we will all be taken from this world, and it’s time to shape up. His comments apply as equally well to the thought that for nearly all of us, we’ll die before the end of the world. This passage cannot be seen as an endorsement of the 19th-century teaching of the Rapture…!

Later in this document, the author provides a description of the ‘last days’ that does not include the Rapture, and in fact, shows that ‘the just’ remain on the earth:
Then, when this inevitability has overwhelmed all people, just and unjust, the just, so that they may be found good by their Lord; and indeed the unjust, so that they may be damned forever with their author the Devil, and, as God beholds the human race in danger and being tossed about by the breath of the horrible dragon, he sends to them consolatory proclamation by his attendants, the prophets Enoch and Elijah, who, while not yet tasting death, are the servants for the heralding of the second coming of Christ, and in order to accuse the enemy…
And when the three and a half years have been completed, the time of the Antichrist, through which he will have seduced the world, after the resurrection of the two prophets, in the hour which the world does not know, and on the day which the enemy of son of perdition does not know, will come the sign of the Son of Man… and also even with all the powers of the heavens with the whole chorus of the saints, with those who bear the sign of the holy cross upon their shoulders, as the angelic trumpet precedes him, which shall sound and declare: Arise, O sleeping ones, arise, meet Christ, because his hour of judgment has come!
So, even in this text, we see that there is no mention of a ‘rapture’, but rather, at the final judgment, all the ‘sleeping ones’ are commanded to arise and meet Christ!
1 Thessalonians 4:15-17
This was his primary scripture in this particular service.
Poor exegesis. In 1 Thess 4, Paul is comforting those who thought that their dead friends and relatives were going to be excluded from the resurrection, and was teaching them that both the living and the dead would be included in the kingdom of heaven!

Unfortunately, it is not a priest. It is a Pentecostal Pastor. I am in a Pentecostal Program. I’ve explained in other posts - currently I am legally and circumstantially bound to this program, However I am almost near completion and after graduating I plan on finding a home parish (Catholic) and will not attend any protestant/pentecostal services. One reason that I love this forum is it is accessible to me and I can vent, learn, and fellowship with other Catholics. 👍

Fairly typical my friend, though that date and time setting is extremely odd and does indeed violate scripture where Our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ says, Mark 13:32
But of that day or hour no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father.

I have an article on my blog that deals with with this, and CA has some articles that are very good as well, so I’ll include links to all of that. PM me if you need a hard copy of my article and I’ll shoot it out in the mail.

Hi Church Militant - I always read your posts and visit you site and respect you very much and I have a question about the bible verse you quoted - if the father , the son and the holy spirit are one why would Jesus not know that Day and time? I have always wondered about this. I look forward to you explaining this to me so I can understand and for no other reason.
Thanks

Thanks for that. 😊 I am an unworthy servant; I have only done what was my duty. See Luke 17:10

That’s an awesomely good question my friend and one that I generally just have to 🤷 at because, like you, I figure that being God means that Jesus and the Holy Spirit share all knowledge with the Father.

I did find this answer from the CA staff apologists, which makes good sense to me.
God is all-knowing. If Christ is God, why does he not know the end of days, and only the Father knows?

i would actually like to know his prediction…do share with us. :coffeeread:

Genesis 7:23 is a good counter argument that Matt 24 is talking about the rapture…Protestants simply have it backwards…taken doesn’t mean raptured , it means (eternal) death…left means being granted salvation.

In gen 7:23 , Moses and 7 others were left because of their righteous preparation for destruction of the world by The Lord, and those not heeding had their lives taken.

So, at the end of time, if it happens in my lifetime, I hope to be left–even though the tribulation will be difficult–and not taken to the place of damnation.

Peace and all good!

The pastor is wrong. No one knows the time or the hour. or the name.

You can see the warning signs though, just as Jesus said.

We once had a Priest who said the Irish would be spared the Tribulation, because Ireland and its people were going to be “inundated” and “drowned” by a great flood from the sea seven years prior to Christs second coming! He used to quote a lot of stuff my father considered “backward” superstition. I cant remember what saint is credited with these prophesies, but they were definitely made and taught to us as kids!!!

1 Thes 4 says the “…dead in Christ rise first.”

Ok, well, when is the resurrection? If we know that the ‘dead in Christ’ rise before the living Christians are ‘caught up in the air’ and if we can date the resurrection, then we can date the ‘rapture.’

Well,

Jhn 6:39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing,** but should raise it up again at the last day. **

Jhn 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life:** and I will raise him up at the last day**.

Jhn 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Jhn 6:54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

Jhn 11:24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Rev 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and * the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received [his] mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

Rev 20:5 **But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This [is] the first resurrection. **

Rev 20:6 Blessed and holy [is] he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, **and shall reign with him a thousand years. **

Now ask the pastor if ANY of those verses are talking about a time that is before the final eschalogical trial…*

There is a connection between the pre-tribulation stand ( and whatJesus said about preparing a place)and the jewish marriage. It has to do with “the last Trump”…not to be confused with the last trumpet punishment of the seven trumpets in Revelation.

A jewish man and woman are to be married. The bride stays at home and prepares herself for her husband for the proper time. Meanwhile, the bridegroom is at his father’s house and a room is made ready for the couple. Now, it is up to the father of the groom to decide just when all is ready. The groom waits upon his father and the bride is waiting upon the groom.

When the time has arrived, the father has a trumpet call and when the bride hears it, she knows she is called to go to her bridegroom. This sound is called the Last Trump.( note; she should have oil for her lamp in case it is at night)

So when (those who believe in a “rapture” for lack of a better word) we hear the Last Trump as it is described in Scripture, we are being called up to meet Jesus in the air in a twinkling of an eye.

I find this very interesting. Even if you discount the whole rapture thing, it brings meaning to what Jesus was talking about when He said " In My Father’s House there are many mansions and I go to prepare a place for you. And I will come again to take you there to be with Me"
The Jews if that day knew just what He was talking about. So would have John understood what the Last Trump was.

It is all about the marriage between a Bride and a Bridegroom.

This was the first post that did on this topic last week. So this week was Part 2. Based on the customs of the Jewish wedding the Pastor concluded the “rapture” would be pre trib .

No he claimed to know when the Rapture would occur. He backed up his theory with this:
  • Proverbs 25:2
“It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.”

This is what He feels provides an encouragement to seek out the mysteries of God.
  • Matthew 24:36
“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”

*He determined that in this passage that Christ is alluding to a specific time.
This is what people would say in reference to the upcoming holiday of Rosh Hashanah. It would occur on the New Moon, and the trumpet would sound before it began. Along with the wedding, the groom would come around midnight to “snatch up” his bride. So 12 AM in Jerusalem would be 5pm EST. So He concluded that it would be at 5PM EST - And every year he and his family sit on the front yard and wait facing towards the East. 🤷

This coming Wednesday, he will expose who and where the Anti-Christ is from. :hmmm:

I will probably get told I am wrong about this and told I’m nuts, but oh well, here goes. The rapture - one was taken up and the other left behind. I’m sure you’ve read the scriptures - two people working in a field - one was taken one was left behind. I don’t listen to those scary threatening sermons anymore, Catholic or protestant or whatever the source.

For me, the rapture is when you go from not understanding to understanding. You understand God’s will, the gospel, Jesus’ mission, your mission, God’s love and I could go on. Here’s a modern day spin. Two people riding in a cab, one was taken up and one left behind. One went from not understanding to understanding. One went from thinking from the world perspective to putting on the mind of Christ. One entered the Kingdom of God (the kingdom is here) and the other remained behind in his stinkin’ worldly thinkin’.

I don’t know how to put it anymore clear. I’m sure many will disagree with me or think I’m nuts. It’s OK, it’s happened before 🙂

I think I’d have to keep my thoughts to myself, but I can tell you that my answer is simply, “Oh well…good luck with that pastor.” he seems to have forgotten a very clear statement from Our Blessed Lord himself that says, "Matthew 24:46
Blessed is that servant, whom when his lord shall come he shall find so doing."Notice that Our Lord says “doing”, and then in Luke 12:35-48 we see that we are supposed to busy doing what Jesus told us to do…not sittin’ on our lawns watching like this preacher does. Our “watching” involves doing what He commissioned us to be about.

Even the verses he is using are taken so far out of context they can be twisted to mean nearly anything.

I can hardly wait to hear who he tags as the anti-Christ. :hypno:

So yesterday was the final part of his end times series. Now, for the most part I could understand his view. Basically, he said the anti-Christ will be from the Muslim world - The Caliphate. He showed how they are trying to re-establish and reform the office of the Caliph. He brought up an actually interesting idea:

First he showed the historical political powers - He used Daniel & Revelation. And he used the below picture to explain the interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream.

What I thought was Interesting was the 4 Horseman in the Book of Revelation. And compared with the Palestinian flag. The color “pale” is used only once in the Bible (this is what I heard but I have not looked into it yet), in Revelation - which in Greek is “Chloros” (kloros) and is translated into “green”. <— That’s pretty interesting.

There was a lot - way too much for me to remember to put in this post. But it also included the prophet Mohammed - The crescent moon (which explained to go along with the new moon before Rosh Hashanah. And the Crescent moon being the symbol of Islam.
He said the Anti Christ would be “a” Mohammed (Dajjal) For the most part I could see where he was going with this. Now the only thing I dont agree with is he kept saying the “Rapture” of the church must happen first and then this will spark the great tribulation. But from everything I have been reading has said opposite, specially - Matthew 24: 29-31

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”

Though it’s possible, I still think he’s far afield and unwise to offer all this. At best it’s biased speculation and I’ve seen similar teaching before.

The only real answer is to ride the future out and be about Our Father’s business.

Fairly typical my friend, though that date and time setting is extremely odd and does indeed violate scripture where Our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ says, Mark 13:32
But of that day or hour no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father.

Amightywind is an International Apostolic and Prophetic Messianic Hebrew Pentecostal Ministry.
They believe the rapture will occur on a Sabbath during the Feast of Trumpets also called Rosh Hashanah.
I told one of the members that it looks like date setting to me and this person explained that no one knows when the Crescent of the New Moon will be sighted.

This is from Amightywind ministry website: “On Friday evening Sept. 7 there will be 2% illumination of the new moon for a very short time and through experience the new moon has not been sighted in Israel under these conditions. So this Yom Teruah/Rosh Hashanah will most likely be on a Sunday and it is very unlikely for the rapture to be this year.

Having said that, we still will be watching Friday evening for a miracle that the new moon will be sighted on Friday night which means Yom Teruah/ Rosh Hashanah would fall on the Sabbath and the rapture could take place this year, but it will take a miracle.”

This is what Catholic’s believe:
Matthew 24:36
36 But of that day and hour no one knoweth, not the angels of heaven, but the Father alone.***************
Jewish believe:
Rosh Hashanah is the ONLY festival that we do not know the day or the hour in which to keep it. Therefore, we have to be on the alert, we have to be awake, and we have to be watching for it. Do you want to be asleep when Yeshua the King returns?

Any comments?
