Fundraiser at what expense? Really, a rodeo?

I know of some small farming communities near here where that is considered initiation to manhood, still to this day.
I know, I know… tradition.
But that alone can not allow us to avoid questioning this practice in light of our faith.

Nothing wrong with raising funds for a parish, but the choice of fundraiser should be carefully considered. If there are other alternatives to the choice of a fundraiser, one that does not cause animals to suffer might be a superior choice, and more in line with Catholic teaching.
Just like bad, bad school fundraisers!! I was always when the kids had to sell a non food item - wrapping paper or lightbulbs - but husband always could eat an entire box of candy bars with almonds

add chicken juggleing and cat stuffing. I once saw Steve Martin stuffing cats in his pants.
Steve Martin cracks me up. Were the cats that he stuffed in his pants alive, with claws??? Did he wear a cup???

Exactly… I can’t get my head around this one - of course when something is so ingrained in a culture no one questions it - but I think we should - oh… there goes my questioning of traditions again! 😉

And to aspawloski4th my friend, - how good of you to show such compassion to the cat when you and your family are under such financial stress - please know you are in my prayers, though that does little to change your current foreclosure situation - blessings.
Me and wifey reallywant it to go to a good home, preferrably with little children. Pets are good for kids. BTW on the tradition front. My mom would drive you up a wall. If it wasn’t done in the 1950’s or before, she won’t do it.

I’ll admit it does take a bit of sand to get up there and go for a ride. Very Aside: I wonder why such manhood rituals always seem to involve pain…why not make them write an essay on “World Peace” or other such thing? 😉
Taking pain is considered manly and avoiding it is considered girly. For passing 35 kidneystones I must be super manly.

My hat (having had a couple kidney stones) is (as you know) off to you my friend! :tiphat:

I can share a couple of money saving recipes if you’re up to trying a vegan dish or too!
Blessings,

Well, yes, of course, but why that has developed into a cultural thing would probably make a good thread topic.

35?

Ubermanly is more like it. Ouch.

On this topic I had four kids natural child birth (not exactly a walk in the park) - 2 kidney stones - I’d have another 4 kids before going through the kidney stones again!

Rodeos - I found this link to someone trying to stop rodeos and their use of 5000 volt ‘hot shots’ - sharkonline.org/?P=0000000349

Is it just that people think that we can do anything we want to animals? Some are speaking out against it of course:

OK it took me a while, but I found this thread.

So what the heck is wrong with a rodeo?
Nothing that I can see. Have been involved in rodeo for a long time. Not as a performer(lol) but helping run a charity beer booth. Lots of fun doing both I might add.:clapping:

Off the subject. But now you can see and understand why on the threads I poston here that Iam tough and ornery can’t you!

We hare a Parish Fiesta - carnival rides, booths, and a charity beer booth - Lots of fun, without 5000 volts to the backside of horse, or a calf jolted off it’s feet with a rope around it’s neck ---- i offer this not to be contrary but to get us all to just consider the issue, is it really necessary to make animals suffer to have fun? To raise money for a school?

And ultimately if it is ‘unnecessary’ is it in keeping with the Church teaching -
2418 It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly.

Well, 5,000 volts may be necessary to get the animal to move where we need it to.
Also, you may want to remember Ohm’s law.
It’s not the volts that gets you…its the Amps.

I suppose it all depends on the word necessary.
Without something qualifying it, necessary can readily cover our own entertainment.

So does the CCC qualify this word further?

So, would a dog fighting event be OK if it was a fundraiser? It would be entertainment, I imagine.

Just as a side note, back many years ago, before I had really given it a lot of though and was still an omnivore, I used to ride bulls in the women’s pro rodeo association. Looking back on it, the animals were treated horribly and I’m pretty sad to say that I was a part of that for a while.

***Entertainment ***is never necessary.
