What is the current Funeral Mass said for a toddler? When I was young (pre VII), the Mass was called Mass of the Angels.

Is that still used now?

The priest would be vested in white.

The funeral Mass for a toddler relative was called Mass of the Angels. It was some years ago, but definitely after Vatican II

If the child was under age of reason and was validly baptized, yes the “Mass of the Angels” is used. It is the only funeral where we can be assured that person is in heaven <3

It is not a setting as in a special group of music tunes, it is a special set of prayers from the Roman Missal.

I’m from Connecticut and after the Newtown Killings all the Catholic Children has this type of funeral Mass. Very sad but a powerful statement. They are assured heaven.

I thought it was only said for baptized children under the age of reason. Those are the ones who go straight to heaven.

The children in Newtown were 5 and 6. Age of reason is 7-9. They were ALL under the age of reason when they were slaughtered.

How interesting! I attended such a Mass, but other than a comment during the homily, it was no different to my knowledge than any other funeral Mass. I didn’t realize there was a specific name for it and set of prayers.

sorry about your loss

i had thought that the priest wore white at every funeral

The term “Mass of the Angels” is just a nickname. It can be used or not used. It doesn’t matter.

The proper Mass for the funeral of a child is exactly that “a funeral Mass.”

In the Roman Missal, there is a section of Masses called “Masses for the Dead” within that category are several funeral Masses. There are 2 options for “For the funeral of a baptized child.” Each one has antiphons and prayers applicable to such a Mass. The priest can choose either one, or even parts from both and combine them (one of each prayer).

The “Rite of Christian Burial” is outdated and needs revision because it still has the old, now abrogated Mass prayers. There are options there for a funeral for a child who dies before the age of reason. These prayers, such as prayers at the wake or the petitions for Mass, or the prayer at the grave can still be used.

Edit: black, violet, or white (at least in the U.S. and some places, for white) vestments may be worn, entirely at the discretion of the celebrant.

Thank you for your condolences.

You’re correct about the white with funeral Masses. I’m reading a book on the Holy Souls in Purgatory and some were complaining that Masses aren’t being said for them. If they had Masses said for them, they would be in Heaven sooner.

I wish they would go back to the black vestments for funerals.

Either black or violet vestments may be worn at funerals. By special permission, white may be used in the U.S.

The choice of the vestments is left entirely to the celebrant.

Many priest, myself among them, do in fact wear black vestments for funerals.

So, you get your wish!

Thank you, Father, for the info. I just wish the vestments would be black for Funeral Masses. Maybe more people would pray for the dead and not just on Nov 2nd.

i haven’t seen black vestments in like, forever, at a funeral

not sure why it would be the “celebrant’s” discretion

when i am planted, please father wear WHITE

I hear you.

Again, many priest are wearing them. This is especially true for younger priests (God bless them and our Blessed Mother protect them!). It’s mostly only the elderly ones who cling to insisting on white vestments.
