As I have said before, I finished RCIA last Easter at a “modern” parish. Now that I have attended a parish that includes the Extraordinary Form I realize I have so much I never learned of…I wasn’t never even taught how to use a rosary or basic traditional prayers. What should I do? I can’t imagine doing RCIA at this other parish would be a viable option but what else may I do? I have an infant son who will be raised Catholic and I also wanted to know more so if SN better raise him as a Catholic .

Why don’t you approach the priest at your newly discovered church and ask him to recommend some catechetical resources to you?
Our priest provides the RCIA training to all prospective converts and, in addition to this, has held talks before Mass which are well attended by parishioners.
There is always so much more to learn.
May God bless you.
Amen.

Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church and/or the Compendium of the Catechism, in question and answer format. Both are available to read free online.

How would I go about this? Not being facetious but talking is discouraged in the church during Mass. I am not a parishioner at this church either, would the priest still be able to does know with me regarding counsel? I am unsure how to go about it…forgive me but I’m such a newbie.

There should be time both before Mass and afterward to visit and get to know others. At our Parish we have a welcome “committee” as well as a welcome table full of pamphlets, missals, veils, etcetera for “newbie’s” who show up. Some of us arrive about an hour before Mass, we set up and visit. 30 minutes before Mass we pray a rosary while Fr. hears confessions. We also have a pot luck third Sunday of each month. Worth checking to see if yours offers anything like that.

To my knowledge they do not. At my original parish, they did once a month have a “hospitality Sunday”. But there is no mention of this in bulletin or said before Mass… Some people do stop and speak to the priest outside but that’s about it.

Get in the line to talk with the priest, introduce yourself and tell him you are a recent convert of Parish X, and ask him where to call to make an appointment to talk with him about some of the things you feel you ought to learn.

ETA: don’t feel overwhelmed by the length of the list! First, you probably already know some; second, several are connected with the Rosary; and third, you don’t have to memorize them to pray them.

Here is a list of the basic prayers:
Sign of the Cross
Apostle’s Creed
Our Father
Hail Mary
Doxology aka Glory be…
(Fatima Rosary Prayer)
(Hail Holy Queen)

(The above are all used in the Rosary. The best way to learn how to pray the Rosary and memorize the prayers is to see how it is structured, and then pray along with a recording.)

Other Important Prayers:
Act of Faith
Act of Hope
Act of Charity

Act of Contrition

Guardian Angel Prayer
Blessing Before Meals
Grace After Meals

All the prayers listed above are pretty set; sometimes there are minor variations.

Below:
You also need a Morning Prayer and an Evening Prayer. There are lots of different ones of these.

In addition, you will want to make a *short *examination of conscience (2–5 minutes) each night and pray an Act of Contrition for these sins.

Other Basic Prayers:
St Michael the Archangel prayer
Come Holy Spirit (very good to pray before learning or meditative prayer)
Angelus

How to find these prayers:

Search for *Catholic Name of Prayer: *i.e., *Catholic Morning Offering: *I always include Catholic at the beginning to increase my chances of getting relevant returns. Also, you can find Rosary recitals on Youtube; they often have the prayer written on the video, or perhaps a meditation connected to the mystery.

These prayers are (iirc) all at the beginning of the Baltimore Catechism, the upper levels, not the first ones (I am not sure about the lowest-level ones). This version has several of the basic prayers; note: 1. the prayer section is just after the Table of Contents but not listed in the T/C; and 2. since this is very old, it does not include some changes, most importantly, the Confiteor is different now, and the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary are not included as they are in the resource below.

Also, there are often little prayer booklets which contain all these as well as some others.

There are also many booklets and online resources on just the Rosary.

Don’t bug out. Not that you are, just saying, God is in charge. He may want you to pass with flying colors then challenge you with more information. I would stick with what you have, and learning the Rosary is tough (the mysteries can be hard to memorize). Getting acquainted with the Rosary can at some parishes be as easy as asking for Rosary beads and getting a card with them for practice. Some Churches have them both for the taking inside. I’ve been to Rome (including the Vatican), at least 2 cathedral churches in CT, 4 non cathedral in CT, two in Austin, TX, two in Colorado, and one in Wyoming. Many things vary, but it’s one Church. I’m proud of you for going on the path to Catholicism, you are doing great.

I’m pretty sure you can find youtube videos on Mother Angelica praying the rosary. EWTN and Catholic Answers have all sorts of resources to help. You can find traditional prayers on either site as well. Ask your pastor for a recommendation for a spiritual director as that might help as well. Everyone could use a good spiritual director 😉

Your bulletin should have a parish directory in it. Call the church office to make an appointment to talk to the pastor.

And FYI: I’m 55 years old and I still can’t pray the rosary without guidance 🤷

If I’m not a parishoner there is that still an ok request? Total tourist at this LM parish at the moment!

Thank you everyone.

If you have EWTN I’m pretty sure they still have the Rosary on as well as the Chaplet for Divine Mercy. I’m a cradle Catholic and am still learning things.

Another good source is Immaculate Heart Radio if you either have it in your area or can listen to it on the Internet. They have a Rosary on each day. Lots of good things on You Tube including many if Mother Angelica’s old programs. I learned a lot from her.

There is a lot to learn of the tradition in the Catholic Church. You could live to be 100 and never learn everything. I suggest that you continue to grow in your faith and ask the HOly Spirit to guide you.

There are any number of places online or in real time, where the traditional prayers and rosary are said. If you live in or near a big city, I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to find groups with the same interests.

Even if someone lived to a hundred and spent the whole time as a devout Catholic, there would still be things they wouldn’t necessarily know or understand.
