Considering it is Sheen, the loss evangelizing opportunity is really a shame. A big one

I can certainly appreciate that. I’d love to see a longer lead-in and a lot of evangelizing going on/

Sheen’s niece is 92, though. It seems to me that having her there was likely a major motivation for having it as quickly as possible.

Probably, but still a HUGE opportunity lost for evangelization. I wonder what Sheen would think. His niece vs evangelizing opportunity?

He no doubt loves his niece, but he is a priest forever, so serving the Lord is/should be the focus in my .02

Fair point. I think evangelization can still take place after the fact, too. Honestly, I think Sheen would be a great patron saint of the New Evangelization. That’s what I’m asking for his help with.

So this evening I got an update e-mail from the Beatification Committee.

Here’s what it says:
Dear Friends of Sheen:

For all those in United States: Happy Thanksgiving!

We look forward to the Beatification of Fulton Sheen on December 21. Ticket decisions will be communicated before the end of next week.

There are several updates to share with you:
  • The Beatification will be broadcast on EWTN, other networks, and will also be available for streaming online.
  • Beyond St. Mary’s Cathedral, several parishes in the Peoria area will open their doors to broadcast the Beatification ceremony, making room for thousands more to join in the celebration.
  • Those who attend a remote site for the Beatification can come to the Cathedral to venerate the tomb on the same day. The Cathedral will be open all day.
  • More information about remote sites will be made available at celebratesheen.com.
  • Tickets are now available for a Banquet on the evening of the day of Beatification. Reservations are accepted at celebratesheen.com
God love you!

Fulton Sheen Beatification Committee
We’re seriously going to be able to get into the Cathedral on the same day to venerate the tomb? I have seen how long the line gets in NYC just to view Padre Pio’s relics in St. Patrick’s, and that was both smaller and better organized than this is likely to be. I’m picturing hours-long line stands. Plus I thought there were going to be several other Masses and ceremonies taking place in the Cathedral after the Beatification, and it’s likely that the place will not be open to people filing past the tomb while those are going on.

The Beatification Banquet reservation website is here…individual tickets start at $ 350 and then there are sponsorships for 6 grand and 10 grand. I’m sorry, but if you want me to throw down 350 dollars, you’re gonna have to come up wtih somebody better than Raymond Arroyo who is all over my TV and Internet for free too much of the time as it is. (I’ve expended that kind of money a couple times in the past to see Paul McCartney, and a President…that’s about it.) I don’t even want to think about whether somebody plopping down 350 dollars gets preference for a Beatification seat. Let’s hope not.

This makes me ill. I try and pause and tell myself that I dont know if this is the norm when it comes to beatifications, but it troubles me.

The Banquest is a fundraiser for the Sheen Foundation, which has financed his beatification, and (I’m assuming) is going to continue financing his cause for canonization. My guess is they are just capitalizing on the fact that many Sheen supporters will be in town in order to start to raise money for the next leg of the journey. I don’t think it’s intended to be some sort of post-beatification reception that just anyone can go to.

I don’t really pay attention to such events as I know they are not targeted at people like me (i.e. people with no money 😝).

There is a part of me that is glad in the sense it gives Peoria more time to do a better and fuller evangelical event. I just wish that there wasn’t this vague to no explanation as to why
Yeah, I was shocked to see this. I’m glad that Peoria explicitly said that it has nothing to do with allegations of abuse, and there have never been any allegations against home either, which is good!

Perhaps in this tumultuous time for the Church, the bishops want to be extra sure of his holiness. Or perhaps there were possible flaws or doubts raised about Sheen’s virtue which need to be addressed. I sincerely hope it is the former!

And as you said, assuming the beatification is rescheduled, this will give Peoria more time to prepare for such a large scale event.

I have a feeling the delay has less to do with Sheen and more to do with other external factors. His cause has been open for 17 years. His life and writings have already been thoroughly investigated.

That’s also my feeling. This guy had a boatload of people who didn’t like him when he was alive.
If there was anything questionable in his past, he would not have gotten as far as beatification. And there would have been multiple articles about it already, probably before he even reached Venerable status.
I also can’t imagine the Archdiocese of New York fighting a years-long court battle over some guy with a questionable past.

I was listening to Catholic Answers on the way home. Tim Stables mentioned that it had to do with the Diocese of Rochester filing for bankruptcy, and wanting to resolve anything that may financially relate to him.

He resigned as Bishop of Rochester 50 entire years ago. I would hope this is some legal formality relating to the bankruptcy.

The Diocese of Rochester people didn’t like him because he was pro-integration.
