From Reuters:
The death of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who was captured and killed by rebels in October, may have been a war crime, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court said on Thursday.

“I think the way in which Mr Gaddafi was killed creates suspicions of … war crimes,” ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo told reporters.

“I think that’s a very important issue,” he said. “We are raising this concern to the national authorities and they are preparing a plan to have a comprehensive strategy to investigate all these crimes.”
I wonder how far that accusation is actually going to fly? After all, his death was hailed in all the so-called civilized countries of the West.

On edit: that begs the question about the degree of guilt of the Obama Administration, if, in fact, Gaddafi’s death was a war crime?

Since we were directly involved with his government’s overthrow, our government cooperated in his death. The question is, if that cooperation was formal or material, immediate or mediate, and, if mediate, how proximate was it…

(just had to throw the last in so that the thread would comply with the requirement to somehow be related to Catholicism)

Gaddafi’s death was murder. Kind of like Nicolae Ceaușescu’s.

Hillary Clinton in a laughing giddy voice: “we came, we saw, he died”.
What have turned into?
😦

With the passage of the Military Detention bill and everything else going on in the news this morning. I sarcastically said to my wife: “Meanwhile Fox News is doing a story about cute puppies!!”
“Lets see” she says changing the channel.
As God is my witness, they were doing a story about…cute puppies.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

That and the tendency to let worth-while stories degrade into shout shows.

Gaddafi went the way of Paharoh IMHO.
The rebels had a dilemma. Do they keep him alive and try him, and then all the dirty laundry is exposed; or do they quickly do him in. It was a pragmatic choice I think. It has its pros and cons. Although the just way would be to have a proper, fair trial and if possible, offer some form of leniency, if he was found guilty.

This reminds me of an old story about a small town that had only one lawyer desperately eeking out a living. Then one day, came to town a new lawyer just out of law school who set up his own practice. They soon had more business than they could handle. What I think is going on here is a prosecutor who is upset because he was denied some business and notoriety due to the high profile defendant.

Of course it was a war crime, but it was just one of many that happened in Libya and is common to the types of events in civil wars.

While the Obama Administration has nothing to worry about in terms of direct involvement the cackling comment made by Hillary Clinton - Secretary of State of the United States of America strips away the veneer of diplomacy and dignity this country would like to have on the world stage. Kind of like if a reporter had published a picture of LBJ peeing on the side of the road during his morning walks as President.

USA does not recognise the ICC. Hence it does not fall under its jurisdiction. No worries. Besides the Americans did not kill Gaddafi. Pity he was killed, nevertheless.
