That is, regarding contemporary praise choruses in the Mass.

To put it as succinctly as I can: NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!

Tonight was the first night that a praise chorus team was leading the music at Mass, and the only reasons I didn’t walk out were (1) I really wanted to receive Jesus in the Eucharist really badly, and (2) I have a personal policy of not “receiving and running”, so I stayed put.

OMGosh, the “Glory to God” was in this hippie/folk style, no one knew how to sing it; the Psalm and responsorial was this minor-keyed, over-staccatoed mess of a modern musical attempt, and I literally about yelled “STOP!” when the Amen was sung (yes, the old time melody):

Aaaaay-MEN,
Aaaaay-MEN,
AaaaaaAY-MEN, AY-MEN, AY-MEN!
(Sing it on down now). . .

Yes, they actually did the "Sing it on down now. . . " in between. NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

The only thing I could do was sit there and offer up my fumings. OMGosh, it was so bad–complete with electric guitar and speakers.  And they were even practicing right before the Rosary started, so bye-bye contemplative sweet silence.

So I fully understand now why there are so many here who hate praise choruses in the Mass. Count me among you.

Did they have tambourines? That’s what I really can’t stand.

If it’s still this early, as in their first Mass, I think that you still have time to complain. I don’t have that serious of an issue with guitar Masses, but that is ridiculous.

I think you could get them out on the Amen alone - at the very least get them to clean up their act bigtime.

The touchy-feely music of the “Church of what’s happening now”. I do not clap like a circus seal during the Gloria! I do not hold hands during the lord’s prayer. Since we are present at Calvary, shouldn’t we be at least respectful? Ah, but the serpent was the most subtle of all the Lord’s creatures…

Christ’s peace.

The “Lilies of the Field” Amen?? I thought that had gone the way of the dodo.

How about this one:

ollie! ollie! ollie! loo oo yah!
ollie! ollie! ollie! loo oo yah!
ollie! ollie! ollie! loo oo yah!

That is what is common before the Gospel is read at the Masses in the parishes around here.

well I happen to like the “praise” music, and purposely go to the Mass that has it because I like it better!

I think some “nit picking” is happening here, if you don’t like that music DON’T GO to that Mass!

I couldn’t figure that one out till I started singing it…made me laugh :rotfl:

We used to have a drum set and I complained about that it just sounded awful!!! They don’t have the drums anymore. I don’t think it was my complaining but probably a LOT of complaining from everyone that did it.

Eww…

That still makes me twitch inside. My school does that one. I never used to really mind it with the old music teacher, because she would at least save it for special occasions, but the new one feels like “Oh, if you do the same one over and over again, it gets boring, so what we’ll do is have four and do one per quarter!” And we’re in that quarter. And I’m one of the kids that sings it. Yeah.

At least we quit using the tambourines. Kids still clap, though.

Since the fun has just begun, you may have more opportunity to tame it. Talk to the pastor and present the documents and the words of our recent popes (see the music at Mass thread for most of those documents and words). Try and make him understand what the problems are, and that your objection is not one of personal preference but of adherence to Church teaching regarding sacred music.

They used to sing that one at Old Parish for school children’s liturgy; that, AND some song called “Lead Me, Guide Me, Along The Way” that sounded as if it should be sung by cowboys around the campfire instead of Catholic school students in a suburban parish. All the kids would bob and down (faculty, too, inadvertently).

I would change my Mass time, Twosweet.

Our church has a similar mass called Life Teen. It’s geared towards the teens, but anyone can go. I personally don’t like it much, but we all know when it is so we can avoid the Sun 6Pm mass if we don’t like this kind of celebration.

Are you sure this isn’t an introduction of a particular mass for the youth?

this thread makes me feel like I am in a time warp, sure it is not a resurrected old thread from 1975? Aay yay aay MEN
that is so retro

there is a P&W group (pronounce it not like the place you sit, but the noise you make when something smells bad) that used to play here and now helps at a neighboring parish, and I always forget to skip their scheduled Masses. They are good musically but evidently went to college after the “We are one in the Spirit–Sons of God–Kumbayah” years but before the Taize revival, I’d guess 80s (Gather one-hit wonders) surely the ebbtide of liturgical music. “Peace is flowing” is their signature tune.

I’m so glad that I haven’t heard that one in a long time. That came, I believe, from an outdoor Papal Mass in Kingston, Jamaica – the same Mass which many claim popularized the holding of hands during the Our Father. I did hear another moldy oldie this morning: “They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love,” which really deserves a proper retirement.

And the saddest and funniest part is that it’s not what’s happening now anymore. It makes 20- and us 30-somethings cringe too!

A few posts back: I like the Chesterton quote, “The Catholic Church is the only thing which saves a man from the degrading slavery of being a child of the age.” I sometimes think of the latest fads as being Trendy Trash. A few years ago I actually booed in church at some inappropriate choreography that catechism students were doing in front of the altar. (my opinion) There went my Christian charity! :o The stated theme of this weekend’s silent retreat was “Christ is our hope.”. If hope springs eternal and where there is life there is hope, then for God’s sake, don’t kill any babies! If, according to the song, “Mothers, don’t let your sons grow up to be cowboys…” But for God’s/goodness sake let them grow up and grow up yourselves too, avoiding all the trendy trash that lures you into vanity and neuroses and dependence on weird chemicals that some drug peddler or pharmaceutical conglomerate has tricked so many into using… You can do it! Go reasonably GREEN and be a good steward. 👍 Colmcille:)

When I was in choir a few years ago that was introduced by our choir director, along with hand movements which she insisted the choir members do and which I would not do. So while everyone else in the choir was waving their arms around like cheerleaders I just stood there singing. And that is exactly what that reminds me of doing a cheer. The choir director taught the whole thing to the parishioners. It looks pretty weird to see an entire church waving their arms around and singing this, especially when you are thinking to yourself that this is a mockery of a soleum moment. I like putting some pep in the music, but there is a time and place for everything.
