Ohh…the true gospel is much older than your apparent claim of 2,000 years. The gospel can be found right after the fall of mankind. Christ is the lamb slain before the foundations of the world. Therefore, your gospel is the new one on the block. 🤷
Yes, as the it says in John: The Word was God, and the Word was with God, from the very beginning:) Christ, is the Word. What the previous poster was referring to, is that the Catholic church has taught the gospel OF Christ, steadfastly, unchanged for 2000 years. The Word has been with us from the Beginning… I think you’ll agree “Christianity” has been with us 2000 years:)

So…since you believe we teach a different gospel now, what has changed?

Reformed Theology and Roman Catholicism rejects dispensationalism dear sister. 🙂 Redemptive history includes both OT and NT saints saved by the blood of Christ. Check out the book of Hebrews and especially Hebrews 11.

Yes, I absolutely agree:) It is by the blood of Christ that we are saved!

But I don’t think you understand my question. I’m not asking “how are we saved” or “how were the old testament saints saved” but what has CHANGED in the church’s teaching on the gospel messge from the infancy of Christianity?

I think we need to continue to study the Scriptures together to see what the church taught in regards to the gospel message from infancy, don’t you agree? After-all, I’m catholic too.

How can we agree that what you read in our study together of scriptures, is THE interpretation and infallible truth on the matter? Or are you now infallibly protected by the holy spirit?

I’m not trying to find our own interpretations of scripture, I’m trying to ask what the church taught about the gospel message THEN that they do NOT teach now. How has the message changed? You still have not been able to answer this, and I believe it is because you do not know, and you do not want to admit that the church (the Catholic Church) has never ered from the very beginning.

Oh… we all know in part and believe things that are in error…including those who are the apparent successors of Peter. Your argument is the same as a Mormon Christian in regards to apostolic succesion and authority. Even the apostles errored…Paul rebuking Peter to his face publicly in regards to the truth of the gospel. I thought Peter is suppose to be the first pope?

So please illuminate me and tell me what we are believing in Error. What did Christ and the apostles teach that the Catholic church is teaching contrary too?

If I am in error, you as a brother in Christ need to have more than “you’re in error because you believe something that’s in error” to back up your claim. In WHAT am I in error about? In WHAT is the Catholic church in error on, that was not the gospel message of the first Christians? You said we teach a false gospel…so illuminate us. What is it? And how do we know that what YOU are saying is NOT in error, except to believe that you are guided with the gift of infalibility?

I already gave you that answer to your question this morning. If we continue with our Bible Study in the book of Galatians, maybe you will gain new insight? Let’s all get back to the book of Galatians! 👍

Galatians 3

By Faith, or by Works of the Law?
3:1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by [1] the flesh? 4 Did you suffer [2] so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify [3] the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith
10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” [4] 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit [5] through faith.

The Law and the Promise
15 To give a human example, brothers: [6] even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified. 16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ. 17 This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. 18 For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise.

19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. 20 Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one.

21 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave [7] nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

I love the book of Galatians:) I’ve read it, and re read it. I’ve committed passages of it to memory. God’s word is amazing!

And now that I’ve read it, I’ve interpreted that the Catholic church is absolutely right in its interpretation.

So tell me, why am I wrong?

Ashley,

This bible study is not about me or you. If you want to participate with the rest of us, then share your comments about Galatians chapter 3.

I think you are right. Reformed, for some reason, is afraid to find out that what he has been taught about Catholicism is not true. I found this comment last night:
The apologetics section is quite controlled and monitored according to Catholic dogma.
He is also laboring under some erroneous notion that the forum rules may not be equally enforced on the non-Catholic forum?

I think you have misunderstood the charism of infallibility. It is given to the Church, not to the individuals. God never promises that individuals will not fall into error.

Do we want to continue this study of Galatians without all the n-C “reformed” commentary?

I’m game, or we can ask the Mods to close or pull it and start it again here on our own.

What do you guys think?

I think it's a good idea:) But last I heard, aren't we all scared of the Scriptures? =P

To be honest, I have not found any “bible studies” on CAF very life giving for me.

I don’t think Reformed’s idea of “bible study”, while it may be effective in other venues for evangelization, is not effective here. His current status seems to be a testimony of this. I do a lot of scripture study by virtue of my participation in CAF, but I do not think this is the appropriate venue for the kind that I prefer for spiritual enrichment. Perhaps I am too “contaminated” by the Eastern approach of meditation?

Paul was rebuking Peter for his behavior in not eating with the gentiles when the Jews were present. He was not rebuking Peter for teaching a heresy.

Infallibility covers the pope when he is teaching ex-cathedra that is from the chair of Peter in the case of faith and morals. It doesn’t cover his impeccability, that is his imperfect behavior.

They only reason the Mormon church would make claims similar to the Catholic church, is they are trying to claim they are the true church.
Just like satan imitates and angle of light.

Oops, sorry, I didn’t see the last posts trying to get this thread back on tract.

Now were were you before you were so rudely interrupted?

No…I do somewhat agree… I think the best context for a Bible study is in person, with a purpose. Like the one I belong to… we are following the “Women of Virtue” book series… We don’t just take a book of the Bible and pick it apart… We take a Virtue taught by our Lord, and use the Bible to apply it to our lives, if that makes sense?

I do enjoy studying scripture and applying it, but I think when I was protestant, I read the Bible too often with the intention of picking it apart to fit my own ideas… It’s too easy to just take passages and find meanings they weren’t really talking about, especially for someone like me who still has so much to learn about the “context” within the church you know?

Have you tried to listen to music when you are doing these online bible studies, they help me think and focus.
I am specifically thinking of the Divine Mercy Chaplet as sung by Donna Cori Gibson (Godtube video)

Divine Mercy Prayers by Donna Cori Gibson(CD for sale)

The background noise and the message helps me focus on what is good.
