…well, actually, if the pope or the member of the hierarchy or mere Catholic Priest were a scientist… they would have the authority to teach on science and the natural world:

…I concur with you that on theological grounds the Church has no authority on making certain pronouncements; however, I cannot but strongly disagree with the dictates that being a member of the Church would automatically bar a person for having any authority in matters of science and the natural world.

No pope, no body of the church hierarchy, not “the Church herself”

If one of those is a scientist, then yes, within that competence, a person teaches.
The point is, the Pope or any other Church person does not definitively pronounce on matters of scientific discovery.

This is not about authority, it’s about competence in a particular field of study.

Thanks for the clarification…

…though I was addressing the prevailing, albeit ignorant as chalk, belief that the “Church” (which is deemed as anything relating to Catholicism) is anti-science and anti-progress–and that science has liberated man from the Church and her oppressive authoritarian rule.

…so, yeah, I may be a little sensitive to open-ended statements that may be used/interpreted to mean that the Church is on a quest to keep man ignorant and malleable.

…I think we are missing each other…

I have not inferred that you have made any statements, other than what you have put into your text.

I am expressing my concerns with those who would surmise, from your expression, that in deed the Church (every single Catholic member of the Church) has no authority (right) to expound on anything relating to science (which in my mind includes mathematics) and nature (everything dealing with the planet’s ecological systems); to my estimation, a generalized statement as you’ve presented could be taken/used as a form of gag-order on the Church… i.e.: when did anyone learn, from text books, that Catholic Priests have contributed to and help shape the sciences?–even now the Euro states want to shape a new world order where the Church/Christianity has only ‘kept man in the dark as secularism, humanity’s hero, has brought everything “good” into existence.’

…sorry if I’m stuck on this plane… yet, consider the various states (including the US) where the Church is silenced under the guise of separation of Church and state or some other legalism/practice (i.e.: papalists are not patriotic/cannot be trusted, etc.)

Yet, it seems that instead of sharing some balancing commentary I have caused a tangent to bring confusion.
