Gallup: 82% of Catholics say contraception is ‘morally acceptable’

May 28, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Mere days after 43 Catholic dioceses and organizations launched an unprecedented mega-lawsuit against the Obama administration over its contraception mandate, a new Gallup poll found that 82% of Catholics in America believe contraception is “morally acceptable.”

Wow. This is incredibly sad. We need some hardcore catechesis to change this. That means that priests need to mention in their homilies that contraception for preventing pregnancy is a sin.

That said, I don’t expect the pro-life movement to make much greater strides until the pro-life movement largely rejects contraception.

While the statistic looks sad, it is in fact just a number that is being used to manipulate for shock value, as are most “statistics”.

If you look closely at the the poll, only 1,024 people were asked questions.
And first off, you have to ask, was every person answering honestly?

And even if they did, that is still only 0.002% of the Catholic population of the US.

Do I believe that we have a huge catechesis problem in the US? You bet!
Do I think this “statistic” accrately portrays the “Catholic” belief? No way!!

In the end, what does it matter what 82% of people think if their thoughts aren’t rooted in logic and reason? Most people choose to believe what they will (hence the nonsense of the "I believe that God is fine with me just the way I am" mentality) anyway, even those here on these pages who are probably more informed than the general population.

My question is: Who paid for the Gallup Poll? They do not conduct polls for free.
Also, the results of any poll depend upon how the questions are phrased. It is quite easy to skew the results to give any result the questioner wants.
I smell a big rat coming from the Obamaites and the secularists.

I don’t think this looks so good. What the Catholic Church in the U.S. seems to be saying is that they can’t convince their members about their non-contraception doctrine using catechesis, so they need to use draconian means (which are so harsh they are actually illegal for all “non-religious” employers) to enforce their doctrine anyway.

Although I am only speculating, the information in this poll may be used in some form of a response to the Catholic lawsuit against Obamacare – and may be used in an attempt to divide and conquer.

From a purely political perspective, it appears you could drive a pretty effective wedge between many “catholics” and the magesterium. The current administration doesn’t appear to want to budge. The Bishops won’t either. There will be no room on the fence for any Catholic.

Not only too difficult to understand but also too difficult for some to practice. The Billings Method is more reliable than the Pill and supported by the Church but people will do what they want to do and justify their sins to themselves.

very sad that you would compare OT dietary laws meant for the Jewish people to contraception which leads to abortion, break up of marriages, screws up your body. Have you ever read really studied the churches teaching and even tried to practice it?

I used to think the contraception teachings of the Church were kinda wrong, but now I’m 100% sure the Church is correct.

I’m guessing that contraception is one of the hardest for people to accept, but that doesn’t mean the Church is wrong.

The moral teachings of the Church aren’t up for a vote…it’s the Truth!

Not just that, but they need to stress that the Catholic faith is like a spider’s web or, as the saying goes, a “seamless garment”…you can’t pick it apart without damaging it.

I absolutely believe that number. I can’t tell you how many women, from young to quite elderly, have quietly whispered to me their big confession that when they were struggling to feed and clothe their family, they resorted to contraception. These are mostly very, very devout women who all felt terrible about their decision and ALL confessed to a priest. And every priest, from East to West coast, old school to young, quietly assured them that it was OK.

Dozens of women. Dozens of priests. Every one of them accepted the Church’s teaching in their heart but…

I am with Calivn, Zwingli, Luther, and the founders of the protestant reformation on this one. None of them were in the 82%. They all believed contraception to be a moral evil, and of course all protestant churches had the exact same teaching as the Catholic Church for hundreds of years, up until 1930. Did the moral law suddenly change in 1930? No it did not. But people began to disregard it.
