What interests me about the show and book series is the back story, the long history of Westeros and Essos.

My sister and cousin keep recommending this show to me but I don’t know hmm. I don’t like violence and well I guess I can skip over the sexuality but is it worth it?

There are so many wholesome films/shows/books/podcasts/albums out there that I don’t find enough time in my days to consume them all. I will admit that it does take some effort both to reject popular culture and seek out acceptable media to consume. But for me this is similar to the effort of finding and eating wholesome food. If I lived on chips and soda I would surely have problems, why do people put junk into their eyes and ears?
Especially Catholics who are supposed to know better. Who should be supporting Catholic films and apostolates. How many of you are aware that monks of Norcia and Dominican, Carmelite and Benedictine sisters in the USA have music albums available for sale? How many of those who know about them have given monetary support? And yet you continue to throw away money on HBO and cable TV, and those who watch network TV inevitably funnel money to the advertisers thereof, thus enabling purveyors of trash, porn, and all kinds of dreck to pollute the minds of current and future generations.
Catholics who refuse to support their own are just as bad as the ones voting pro-abortion at the polls. Both types are traitors to the faith. How many of you heard about Little Boy? Did you see it in theaters? Plan to rent/buy on DVD on release day? Why not? This is a Catholic film that was a BOX OFFICE BOMB. Families stayed home and watched Game of Thrones, or they went out and saw Kingsman or It Follows. It is disgraceful that the same Catholics who jump at the chance to see a Pixar or Disney film and buy all its merchandise won’t kick down $8 to the people of Metanoia films, or $15 to hard-working religious. And the same goes for people who buy Starbucks and Keurig coffee but wouldn’t bother with Mystic Monk. Catholics, religious and lay alike, struggle to make a living evangelizing with wholesome media, and their own kind turn their backs. Porn addiction is a strong, demonic and terrible thing, and people in its clutches make bizarre decisions.
I will pray for those who watch Game of Thrones, and hope for your spouse’s and children’s sake that one day you have the courage to make better decisions.

Thank you for your response. I agree with you of course, it’s the reason I don’t watch any popular shows lol. It’s just sometimes it gets tiring to be the odd person out but I guess that’s a small cross to bear. I have watched little boy and bought mystic monk coffee hehe.

I find this a very upsetting comment, to be honest. Someone who buys the first season of Boardwalk Empire is on the same level as someone who is in favor of abortion? No, that’s not accurate. And traitors to the faith? When the Vatican issues such a statement I’ll believe it.
As far as wholesome entertainment, I’m sorry to say that overtly Christian films (that is, films whose message override the form) don’t interest me. Robert Bresson and Andrei Tarkovsky, both Christians, made beautiful films I love and own. Heck, even Going My Way is one of my favorite films (Jean Renoir remarked that Leo McCarey understood people like no other Hollywood director). But God’s Not Dead and Little Boy, no thanks.

Let me clarify my comment then. Perhaps it’s not “just as bad,” maybe it’s worse. Because it’s direct monetary support of an evil enterprise of propaganda. Hollywood and the rest of the mass media has specialized in spreading lies contrary to the faith for decades now. Why do you think Population Control has so much traction today? It’s because Hollywood has been cheerleading for it from the start. I used to go ga-ga over gorgeous starlets and follow their every word and photo. Then I woke up and realized how many of them were rabid supporters of Planned Parenthood and their ilk. Every dollar you spend on that disc is going into pockets of rich people who support evil charities and vocally advocate for grave sins at every possible chance, and yes, that is just as bad or worse than voting for Nancy Pelosi.

I’m always hungry for something similar to LOTR, but as others have said, the sex and violence cross the line for me. I watched the first 2 seasons, but I couldn’t justify supporting the show any more after that. I struggle with porn as it is, there’s no reason to add fuel to the fire.
Sex and violence are a part of our everyday world, but there are ways of implying it that aren’t so explicit. I try to imagine watching the show with a good priest sitting next to me and it makes me cringe.

Yup. I would argue people who watch that dreck and espouse other to watch it do more damage than those who watch Game of Thrones. It makes the religious look like they have no sense of artistic integrity and encourages writing more pandering, watered down garbage.
The Passion of Joan of Arc, Black Robe, Ben Hur, Bells of St. Mary’s and other, however, are excellent religious films.
