Gay Catholic priest getting married

TORONTO – Canada’s first openly gay Catholic priest is to mark another milestone.
Father Karl Clemens is getting married Saturday to his partner Nick.
He says he’ll be the first man of the Catholic cloth to enter into a same-sex marriage in Canada, and maybe even in North America.
“I’m not doing it to start a revolution, but if people want to exercise their right, and so forth, that’s terrific,” Clemens told Sun Media yesterday.

I’m always amused by these “Catholic priest first to do x!” stories, only to find wrinkles in the fine print. Someone wake me when an active priest does this and remains in good standing with the Church for any significant amount of time.

Yes, the priests in Canada have to be celibate, too, even after they retire. Evidentally, that promise doesn’t mean so much to this guy. 🤷
 
Wouldn’t he be automatically excommunicated and prohibited from acting as a priest in a parish? I would think, and hope, that if he is acting as a priest he’s a rogue priest.

I don’t know whether or not he would be automatically excommunicated, but he is certainly automatically barred from ministry.
Can. 1394 §1. Without prejudice to the prescript of can. 194, §1, n. 3, a cleric who attempts marriage, even if only civilly, incurs a latae sententiae suspension. If he does not repent after being warned and continues to give scandal, he can be punished gradually by privations or even by dismissal from the clerical state.

The priest has had his faculties removed by his bishop, meaning that he cannot publicly act as a priest by doing such things as offering masses.

He is making a political statement. Obviously the “marriage” won’t be recognized by the Church.

**Sounds like he has a severe lack of understanding, he doesn’t understand that priests take a vow of celibacy and that the Church teaches love the sinner, hate the sin.

The Catechism is very clear; “Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. **Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.” They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. **They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.” (CCC 2357)

Among the sins gravely contrary to chastity are masturbation, fornication, pornography, and homosexual practices. (CCC 2396)

The Church is not homophobic, all acts contrary to chastity are condemned, whether committed by heterosexuals or homosexuals (PC= gay!).

Thank you. What part do you think I didn’t get? He served 33 years in his parish and then moved to Toronto 10 years ago. May we assume he has been retired since age 60?

Once a priest, always a priest. Well, how does this work. Isn’t the whole point he is saying he’s gay and a priest?
 
Although it does raise an interesting canonical question of whether or not this qualifies as an “attempted marriage”?
 
It would be prudent for the Canadian Bishops to issue a statement declaring his status as non-priest. Excommunicating him would also send a positive message to the faithful. Although in Canada this move to excommunicate could be seen as a ‘hate’ crime and punishable. All in all, the Canadian Bishops should not sit on their hands.
 
Would he also not be excommunicated for being in a state of heresy as he believes marriage can be contracted between two people of the same sex?
 
I have to wonder why he as a Catholic priest would enter into any marriage, whether heterosexual or homosexual, when the vows he took as a priest would be violated for doing so? One does not give up the Holy Order vows upon retirement so is this man a priest still or not? If not, then he is still committing an act of sin; if he still is a priest then he is not only committing a sin by his actions but also because he broke the vows he took when he became a priest.
He is spitting in the face of the priesthood by advancing a live-in relationship to one of marriage and please do not try to convince me it is a celibate union. If that were the case he would not need to openly declare his sexual orientation under the banner of ‘marriage’. What I do find rather confusing is his manner of retirement and who is paying for his sinful union?

Yes, I thought of that after my last post. Would attempting marriage and attempting something the Church does not consider marriage but he considers marriage be treated similarly? That’s probably something they weren’t thinking of when the last Code of Canon Law was promulgated.

Yes we might offer a prayer for him and that is in keeping with our beliefs.
But, you must forgive me for my angst in regard to his folly since I firmly believe this man would contradict the policies of the church by declaring his actions as that of a priest.
