At least the article was fair and truthful in the Church’s teaching… Though the comments are as to be expected…

I don’t’ know if the comments represent the average person or not, but obviously the message of how homosexual marriage affects everyone else, is not getting out.

legalizing homosexual marriage means that homosexuality is taught in the schools as normal and acceptable, and anyone saying opposite is silenced or punished.

Legalizing homosexual marriage means that adoption and foster care services must send children to homosexual couples.

Legalizing homosexual marriage means that religious organizations who have been taking care of orphaned and abused children are expelled from their own ministry.

Legalizing homosexual marriage contaminates the respectability of traditional marriage.

Any more?

Huh? I don’t get those objections. Face it, if children are to be protected, then children with homosexual parents need to be protected, too. I can’t see how a homosexual marriage contaminates the respectability of a traditional marriage. Either your marriage is respectable - in its own right - or not.

Personally, I don’t think the givernment - federal or state - should be involved in the “marriage issue” at all - for heterosexuals or homosexuals. Marriage is a sacrament and shouldn’t be made into a legal standing. I agree that divorce laws get a little sticky when there is no legal definition of marriage, but what really happens in a divorce? Division of assets would have to be on a different standard. Custody of children would be based on evidence that isn’t much different from what is required today.

The top comment on that linked Yahoo! article when I clicked to read it hits the point I came here to make:
We need to get the divorce rate down to help children.
The argument in defense of the family and in defense of educating children holds a lot more merit when divorce is talked about on the same level as a threat as homosexual marriage is.

Also, if the Church is really looking to support education and to ensure that the “openness to the Transcendent” is taught, a strong support of Catholic schools is needed (almost worse than anything in regards to gay marriage or divorce or anything else). There was that article here about, I think it was Philly closing like 48 Catholic schools. I see the # of Catholic Schools dwindle every year here in the Twin Cities, specifically inner city schools, where the influence of that Catholic Education is needed so much more than in the burbs.

“Straight” marriages are gay-ish! Delinking children from sex and sex from marriage, we have sterile sex “straight” marriages. No wonder homosexuals thought they should be grabbing some of the glory. And ooooh! those lovely gowns! This is our culture, and cultural predation should not be tolerated. There never has been homosexual marriage in the history of the world excepting Nero’s “marriage” to his male servant who resembled the wife he kicked to death. Our rainbow. Our Great Pyramid reliquary of Adam’s bones and memorial of the Great Flood, not pagan stuff. Our “EN” females as in Woman & Seed, foe of Lucifer and his seed, not pagan goddesses. “EN” literally means “grace” so EN-ship was fulfilled in the Blessed Virgin, FULL OF GRACE.

What is the trick in males bonding with males? Why should that be sanctified? True integration is female + male, the hardest thing in the history of the world. Back it off and get a domestic partnership, a status not requiring sex or predation of the ancient sacred marriage rite. Right on to more Catholic schools in poor neighborhoods!

Hey, Catholics! Has anybody noticed marriage is not just the first sacrament (Genesis 2) it is the last sacrament (John’s Apocalpyse) when Christ returns for His Bride, the Church? “Apocalypse” means “unveiling” as in the marriage rite! It’s all about uniting the wildly disparate: males + females; God + mankind! It’s not about uniting what is already the same. The Virgin Mary now shares spousal unity with divinity we will share with Christ, please God. May the Virgin Mary remove this profane assault on marriage NOW and give us only strong, holy marriages NOW!

Homosexuals make up the richest demographic in America–no kids?–and there was no rush to sign up for domestic partnerships. The wedding & divorce industry is licking their chops. God forbid this travesty should be visited upon us.

The Church will always maintain marriage between one man and one woman as holy and basic to the health of society. I wish the world would heed the Holy Father’s words…gay marriage is **A THREAT **to our humanity.

I’ve never understood how it’s a threat to humanity. If homosexuals get married, then I, as a married heterosexual, will stop having kids?

Wouldn’t gay couples who can’t naturally have kids also give more options for places adopted kids could go? I mean, do away with abortion, the numbers of kids put up for adoption will increase. Just a random thought I just had.

“Threat to humanity”??? 1-5% of gay men and lesbian women seek marriage…1-5% of the gay population…the gay population is estimated from 2%-10% of the entire population of adults…seems really strange to claim two gay men living in civil marriage or two women living in civil marriage of such a small sub group would threaten humanity.

Seems like the “threat” is fear mongering…but them…I’m not Catholic.🙂

My gay friends latched onto this one on Facebook this morning. Oh, the finger-wagging! But if you read Pope Benedict XVI’s address (vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/speeches/2012/january/documents/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20120109_diplomatic-corps_en.html) he NEVER mentions homosexuality?
Among these, pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and a woman. This is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society. Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself.
As usual, the media takes this as an assault on homosexuals. Talk about reading between the lines! Wanna read more between the lines? “Single-parenthood a threat to humanity’s future.” Where are all the screaming single parents, huh?

He’s advocating the ideal. Marriage is SPECIAL. Marriage is SERIOUS. So many years of moral relativism have eroded the concept of marriage as a SACRAMENT. It’s really considered a legal contract. I have never been opposed to letting anyone enter into a legal contract with any one else, singular, plural, WHATEVER. That’s government. Marriage? That’s a Sacrament. Something else entirely and something that is indeed VITAL to the success of society.

Whereas I see that homosexuals have been, in past and present, discriminated against including us Christians, this should be in part of defense of all dignity of human life who we Catholics hold dear yet often fail at the sound of the word ‘Gay’. The Holy Father is emphasizing well how important man- woman family is to the future of a nation. This cannot be undermined because even homosexuals require the opposite sex to make a baby. These fundamental truths cannot be undermined. Unless we defend traditional marriage, the future looks very bleak. I personally see this gay marriage push, by our administration, and contraception/ abortion as population control methods pure and simple. Having said that, I do see the need to stand up for human dignity where no one gets discriminated against or killed because of their lifestyle choice be it religious or gay. It still happens to many, black, gay, etc. I really love how our Holy Father stands up for human dignity and denounces acts of violence and discrimination against all, but eloquently emphasizes the profound truth that a Gay marriage is not going to provide the peace and respect they so desire. Only love and chastity to Jesus will unlock their true destiny in Gods plan for salvation and bring peace.

The Pope’s address in full at end of the Christmas season addressing the diplomatic corps, summarizing present day economic, political and social crises around the world:

[ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI
TO THE MEMBERS OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS
ACCREDITED TO THE HOLY SEE

Sala Regia
Monday, 9 January 2012](http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/b...ben-xvi_spe_20120109_diplomatic-corps_en.html)

The paragraph containing the selected part as cited in the OP news source is as follows:

Blessed John Paul II stated that “the path of peace is at the same time the path of the young”,[1] inasmuch as young people embody “the youth of the nations and societies, the youth of every family and of all humanity”.[2] Young people thus impel us to take seriously their demand for truth, justice and peace. For this reason, I chose them as the subject of my annual World Day of Peace Message, entitled Educating Young People in Justice and Peace. Education is a crucial theme for every generation, for it determines the healthy development of each person and the future of all society. It thus represents a task of primary importance in this difficult and demanding time. In addition to a clear goal, that of leading young people to a full knowledge of reality and thus of truth, education needs settings. Among these, pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and a woman. This is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society. Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself. The family unit is fundamental for the educational process and for the development both of individuals and States; hence there is a need for policies which promote the family and aid social cohesion and dialogue. It is in the family that we become open to the world and to life and, as I pointed out during my visit to Croatia, “openness to life is a sign of openness to the future”.[3] In this context of openness to life, I note with satisfaction the recent sentence of the Court of Justice of the European Union forbidding patenting processes relative to human embryonic stem cells, as well as the resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe condemning prenatal selection on the basis of sex.

P.S. After posting this, I saw that JimG submitted the link as well.

Not necessarily you. Try to think beyond yourself and more of the broader culture and the future. Marriage has traditionally in most places and in most times throughout history been about a bond between ONE woman and ONE man. You need that to start new life. And the marriage then forms the backbone of the family unit - it fixes the promiscuous male to the female and allows both of them to live together, grow in love together and raise their children together in the best atmosphere. The ego of the male and the female is subordinated to the good of the unit and its most vulnerable - the children and secondly the elderly grandparents who too are vulnerable at old age. If you allow marriage for other people, you trivialise it. Two men, and a man and a dog, a man and a child, a man and a doll, cannot start a new family. What you in fact get is marriage serving a hedonistic purpose of a type of an accessory or a gimmick. It becomes trivialised, it becomes something anyone can easily get into and most notable easily get out of. Traditional marriages no longer become necessary as more and more fashion enamoured people see marriage as an old fashioned throw back to some misogynist and superstitious era. Marriage will lose its meaning and purpose. It’s the same way that money loses its meaning if we print out tons of it and give equal amounts to everyone OR gold would lose its value if we suddenly discovered a cheap way of making tons of gold at home. If we open up marriage to everyone and their dog, we cheapen it, it will lose its meaning and the new ‘meaning’ of a strong yet non-permanent union between anybody and everybody who feels compelled enough to marry someone else (whoever they are) becomes entrenched in society. Your grandchildrens’ marriage will no longer resemble anything we’ve had so far in history, if they bother getting married at all.

But many people already say that marriage is outdated and unnecessary. Lose relationships for pleasure only, and children reared by the state in collectives are what many on the left have traditionally wanted. That way one can indoctrinate the young to be good little government supporters and see extreme socialism as the only viable and possible system.
