Gay marriage opponents closer to qualifying R-74

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Opponents of gay marriage said Wednesday that they have reached the number of signatures needed to qualify a proposed referendum seeking to overturn a law legalizing gay marriage in Washington state, and could turn them in to the state as early as next Tuesday, ahead of a June 6 deadline.

Joseph Backholm, with Preserve Marriage Washington, said that the campaign for Referendum 74 has at least 150,000 signatures on hand. Backers of R-74 need to turn in 120,577 valid voter signatures by next Thursday in order to qualify for the ballot. The secretary of state’s office recommends that campaigns submit about 150,000 signatures in order to provide a cushion for invalid or duplicate signatures.
“We feel that it’s going to be adequate to get it on the ballot,” he said. “We’re quite confident of that.”

Backholm said that his group hopes to hit 200,000 signatures, and that they want to turn the signatures in ahead of the deadline, possibly as early as Tuesday.

It’s not going to be a slam dunk, as our voters previously voted down a referendum on the previous “everything but marriage” expansion of the domestic partnership law in 2009.

It does go to show you, though, that those who say civil unions will be sufficient to give the same privileges as heterosexual couples are wrong. It is never enough for gay rights activists. They won’t stop until their relationships are considered equivalent to real marriages.

Well thing is… most ppl will never accept homo marriage as being equal. I am one of those ppl that thinks that.

It’s not going to be a slam dunk, as our voters previously voted down a referendum on the previous “everything but marriage” expansion of the domestic partnership law in 2009.

It does go to show you, though, that those who say civil unions will be sufficient to give the same privileges as heterosexual couples are wrong. It is never enough for gay rights activists. They won’t stop until their relationships are considered equivalent to real marriages.

It would be like carrying a certification from a pediatrician that says your dog is a horse.

I chose pediatrician rather than veterinarian to add to the absurdity of gay “marriage.” You are right though, that location makes a difference. California is cutting edge, when it comes to absurdity.

Well, now this got me curious and I googled washington state opinion polls gay marriage. I found this article by FOX news which states that the majority of the population in the US now supports gay marriage, and that it is not known exactly why the votes in states which polled in one way, went the other way.

They further go on the speculate, that it might be a time lag between popular opinion catching up with voting trends, and that the Washington referendum may among the first ones to approve gay marriage.

Actual votes matter. We have absentee voting in our state too, so it depends on how many dead people vote. They’ve found ballots in trunks, in the past.
