Within minutes legislators in MA will convene and will consider voting on a move that will allow voters to vote on a ban on gay marriage. There is a lot of opposition, and if the opponents don’t avoid the vote, the vote itself will be narrow (50 our of 200 are needed). The gov. and others have been fighting against it.

I posted this in the prayer intentions (with a bit more info). I repeat it here because it is so urgent!

God bless!

Unfortunately, the people have been silenced.
It is an affront to democracy, indeed. But at least they allowed THEMSELVES to vote. It would have been worse (in principle) if they jettisoned the issue altogether.

151 to 45. The measure’s dead.

Affront to democracy? Isn’t this what we have elected representatives for?

They should have allowed the people to vote directly on the issue. If they vote in favor or against gay marriage I’ll respect the outcome. Let’s start approaching this whole thing from a true democratic perspective.

No, the system is working fine. Putting peoples’ rights’ up to majority votes is never a good thing to do, even more so with Constitutional Amendments.

I have no problems with same-gender unions. If they can be happy the rest of their life good for them. “Traditional” Marriage has never been under “threat”. People of different genders will still form their own long term bonds, procreate and life will go on.

What two unrelated people do in the privacy of their own homes is no threat to society as a whole.

There are many more important issues the Church should focus on that this one which is a waste of time and energy in my opinion.

I think you may have quoted the wrong person 😉 I agree wholeheartedly.

I must be confused. What rights for gays are in danger? Free speech? Freedom of assembly? Right to an attorney?

Once upon a time, people had the “right” to own slaves. Currently, women have the “right” to an abortion.

When it comes to real human rights and dignity, there isn’t a more important issue. Or if there’s one, it’s not by much.

How disgusting. The people have been silenced once again! Gay “marriage” should be banned everywhere!

But civil rights must necessarily be voted on…that’s what makes them civil…that is, coming from the government which is founded by the people. And ideally, any issue which is able to be voted upon by the people rather than simply their legislators, should be. That’s what makes this country this country and not some other country.

And consider what was mentioned elsewhere (if you go to the original posts and follow the links) that the number of Catholic marriages in boston has fallen over 60% in the last 2 decades (and keep in mind that this is faster than the national rate-which is also a falling rate, despite the population increasing!) and tell me that marriage hasn’t been under a steady attack.

Let’s look at the facts.

What are some of the things we say are “attacking marriage”?
  1. Cohabitation/fornication, and such depictions in the media
  2. The “gay agenda” (ooo, scary!)
  3. Pornography
  4. Lack of religious education
Now, what is happening as a result?
  1. More divorce
  2. Fewer marriages
The latter occuring in [Boston](http://bostonnow.com/community/blogs/(name removed by moderator)/2007/06/10/catholic-marriage-in-boston/)
at a greater pace than the rest of the country. I don’t know about the divorce rate. Keep in mind that in Boston:
  1. Cohabitation&Fornication is commonplace (much like the rest of the country)
  2. This area is becoming the haven for gay people. Those are do not like the “gay agenda” are reminded by it by ads with men on a basketball courty saying “I AM GAY-THIS IS WHERE I PLAY”-and are scornfully called “breeders” and “babymakers” out on the Cape in Provincetown, a popular gay resort.
  3. Two weekly newspapers: The Dig and the Phoenix, have a special “adult” section that shows ads for pornography, “escort” services, “sensual massages”, etc. These ads are frequently found blowing around on the streets and trains where children can pick them up.
  4. Boston is one of the most religiously liberal areas in general and dissent of all sorts runs wild in the Archdiocese.
Now look at the facts, and not your ideology, and tell me that marriage isn’t under attack.

Simply on the basis that you don’t like it? There are other people in this country besides you, you know…

It says quite a lot about the moral fortitude and commitment of straights, I’ll give it that – but that doesn’t mean ‘attack’, it means heterosexuals nowadays are horrible at committing to such a thing as marriage.

I will give you that. I don’t want to blame others like gays on all the worlds problems. That’s just not realistic. One time my wife asked me, “Do you want everyone to be just like you?” I said, “No, of course not. Me, and people like me, are responsible for about 90% of the worlds problems!” 😃

Massachusetts has a unique situation in that there are many colleges in which students are given the privilege of voting in the state.

I’d love to see them once not be allowed any privilege to vote unless his/her parents live in the state. I believe it would change elections.

That is exactly the attitude. I recently left the state but most of my family still lives there and have lived in the same town for over 160 years. My husband’s family came from the same town and his mother used to say she was related to Abigail Adam. I’ve only seen this on a family tree sheet. Many other families have similar history - related to a historical figure.Yet outsiders come in and want you to leave. You’re the intruder because you don’t except this liberal philosophy.

THE CITIZENS HAVE BEEN DENIED THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE.

Yes and the “free” Phoenix is now in the suburbs and small towns even at their train stations. The adult section is about 10 pages of porn related clubs. I believe Providence have about 12-15 strip clubs and gay bars that advertise.

They have a “Free newspaper” at all the MBTA’s stations and throughout the city of Boston which is simply liberal news but everyone reads it. And the Globe - 😦

The Boston Globe is on cloud nine this morning - their editorial this morning just reeks of smugness. I’ve lately thought about moving from this state because of the out-of-control secularism here but all my family is here and I’ve lived here my whole life. It has been disconcerting to see this state become ground zero for the secular progressives, though.

My husband use to say 35 years ago, this state is out of step with the rest of the country. You fight secular humanists but its brutal and then the the property and taxes are so expensive, your family can’t afford housing. This is how they treat “young married couples”.

If I pay to read the newspaper, I"ll pick up the Herald. It may be more sensationalist, but at least 1) it’s easier to read through on the T, and 2) being conservative is not a taboo.

I regularly read the Metro and BostonNOW, which tend to be less venemous than the Globe. The BostonNOW prints readers blogs, and mine has been printed a couple of times this past week. Hopefully, if more Catholic minded people get on board, then they’ll post more Catholic minded reports. I know I never could have gotten any of this past the editorial board of the Globe! The Globe will usually only print conservative opinions if it makes conservatives look stupid.

I remember reading a letter in the Globe after the partial-birth abortion ban was upheld about how all the letters supporting the ban were by men, and all letters opposing the ban were by women (this, of course, is a little presumptuous, since a woman can have a man’s name and vice-versa) but the point is that this writer actually must have assumed that these were the ONLY letters they received, and that it wasn’t the Globe editorial staff who sorted out the letters this way! I’m sure that the Globe received many letters supporting the ban from women, and many letters opposed to the ban from men. So why weren’t those printed? Hmm…

I read the Globe because I like to keep my enemies close at hand. I like to know what makes them tick and seeing the opposing side always helps me be more effective with my arguments. However, one of these days they’re just going to make me so mad that I’ll have to cancel it.

I read it online so they don’t get my money ;).

Yes, but I have anger issues, so I avoid the Globe lest I go from  to :banghead:
