Just to keep up with the recent gay theme on the board, I thought I’d post this interesting research from the British Journal of Psychiatry:

BRITISH JOURNAL OF PSYCHIATRY (2004), 185, 479 - 485

**Rates and predictors of mental illness in gay men,
lesbians and bisexual men and women

Results from a survey based in England and Wales
**
JAMES WARNER et al.

Background There is a dearth of research into the mental health of gay men, lesbians and bisexual men and women in the UK.

Aims To assess rates and possible predictors of mental illness in these groups.

Method A comprehensive assessment was made of the psychological and social well-being of a sample of gay men, lesbians and bisexual men and women, identified using ‘snowball’ sampling.

Results Of the 1285 gay, lesbian and bisexual respondents who took part, 556 (43%) had mental disorder as defined by the revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS - R). Out of the whole sample, 361 (31%) had attempted suicide. This was associated with markers of discrimination such as recent physical attack (OR=1.7, 95% CI 1.3-2.3) and school bullying (OR=1.4, 95% CI 1.1-2.0), but not with higher scores on the CIS-R.

Conclusions Gay, lesbian and bisexual men and women have high levels of mental disorder, possibly linked with discrimination.

I am being lazy here, not reading the link…

The question arises: Is the mental disorder being blamed “lack of social acceptance” (ie recent attack or bullying) OR “sexual, physical, emotional or abuse” waaaaaaaay before??

This is reminiscent of the argument that monks are unusually liable to mental ill-health: the figures said so.

Hmm sinners mentally ill?
Possesed maybe, but it’s clearly a sin, so sick only in soul because of it.
Abomination, well is this terrible sin or an explosive device placed within a nation!
It is sick, revolting, and much more!
Why were women created?
They fit a man perfectly in every way, what a man can’t do a woman can encourage him to do and help in the process.
We are only half a person without a wife, unless we are called to be without one, then we get special dispensation from Jesus!

Say the link seems to be broken. FWIW this isn’t news. I’ve read several studies that link homosexual behavior with mental illness, substance abuse and suicide. Often mental illnesses are a package deal…more than one is operational at the same time.

Yeah, there seems to be a combo of being gay, having mental illness, and also eating disorders. Gay men joke about their eating disorders, I think it’s a way to cope- and a bad one at that.

Really? Are they bulemic or do they starve themselves? I know there is a cultural pressure to be quite thin.

Homosexuality isn’t just linked with mental illness; it is a mental illness. Where is Kevin Walker to back me up? 🙂

I know this isn’t really the right quote to take for an answer, but i’d like to show you how the Devil gets in, in a Roman catholic situation.
My Wifes Cousin became Homosexual, he’s a Roman Catholic, we both knew him as a young man, a very sensitive young man, but then so was i.
His mother commited suicide and he found the body in the bathroom.
He was about 8 at the time, he became disturbed, yet no priest could help him.
He met a boy about 4 years later who understood him, i understood him, yet i’m not a Roman catholic, so i was kept away from him by my wifes family, because of the same his mother killed herself.
He became a homosexual with this boy who helped him, it’s a bit of a sad story, yet the only help his family gave him was to control who could see him, the exception was in school (a good roman catholic one!), since then he’s gone down hill.
His Father died about 3 years ago, he came to the funeral made up as a woman with his live in friend, who looked masculine.
Well i didn’t have a job handling this as i knew him before it all happened.
I will always consider it a pity when a christian can’t help a failing one when his church wont.
Now i don’t know if i’ll ever see him again, he was sensitive, yet not homosexual, now he’s gotten in to the habbit of doing it, it’ll be harder to get him out of it.
Still at least he’s a Roman catholic, not that it’s saved him, even if he’s confirmed.
Oh well, i pray he gets to know Jesus, he doesn’t at the moment, apparently he never did.
Still that’s not necessry to be confirmed, you only have to parrot off a few phrases and the father will take your sins after that.
All the pain he suffered, caused him to have traumas, yet the church couldn’t handle it and nobody noticed, or really bothered.
His family (all Roman catholics) are now of the opinion that it’s good that he’s homosexual!!
When the Roman catholic father had the gifts of the spirit this would never have happened, but because he’s blind and cannot see it did.
It could have happened anyway, but because the father has no wife he didn’t understand what was going on. Marriage is a mystery to such people, it’s why a young man should marry.
This of course is Switzerland and a Roman catholic Kanton Luzern.

I’ll wager to say that they are 100% likley to be mentaly ill, after all homosexuality is a mental illness.

That is soooooooo sad. Just to be sure, it is not the failings of the Church, but the failings of the family (who are “Catholics”) that left the young man in the desert with only a mirage of “hapiness” with another man. This story turns my stomach.

Also realize that our society is promoting the celebrating of homosexuality and considering it a gift. (I consider it more a thorn in the side). So it doesn’t surprise me that some of the family thinks it’s good he is homosexual or that they think this is the REAL person. It’s not. In the guise of compassion, these people didn’t understand this young man’s cry for help. It is very sad, I agree.

Not according to the psychologist that I heard speaking about the DSM III.

Mostly anorexia, at least in my experience. Yeah, they want to be super thin. The guy I am close to “came out” almost exactly the same time he dropped 50 lbs (went from 180 to 130)- he was so anorexic and still has major food issues.

FYI and you prob. know this but not all gay men fit into the “sterotype” of super-thin, fit and handsome…
I’d suggest the work of Fr. John Hardon and the book Beyond Gay if there’s anyone struggling with homosexuality or family members dealing with it.

I would be shocked to see any stats that prove that there are a higher proportion of straight men who have eating disorders vs. gay men who have eating disorders though. No stereotype fits perfectly, I’m just going by what my gay best friend has told me.

I will look up that book, I really struggle to know how to deal with this issue (his active homosexual lifestyle) with my friend, it has caused major tensions in our friendship.

It doesn’t surprise me that gay people are more likely to be mentally ill. I have a friend that was severely sexually abused when she was a child by her father when she was about 6 or 7 years old till she was about 10. Her mother never had her go to counseling…oh, and seperated from her husband but refused to turn him in to the police, even though she knew what was going on. Then, when my friend had a “boyfriend” when we were young teenagers, about 15 I think, we found out after they broke up that he was abusive towards her, verbally and physically (once he threw her down the stairs…he was 19 at the time.) So, men terrify her and she has repeatedly said that she hates men, etc. She has been in relationships with two women now and her last one has lasted a few years now. Obviously, I think she feels safe and that she won’t get hurt by her “girlfriend” and that’s why she stays with her. I feel bad for her and I wish there was something I could do but she is a very confused person…she insists that she has never been happier.

Anyway this is one example but I’ve known other gay people that had traumatic experiences in their life, especially when they were younger. It’s so sad that this is what happens.

I don’t have any stats, but from what I’ve gleaned from homosexual co-workers, I gather that a fair number of young men who are living the “gay lifestyle” indulge in quite a lot of self-destructive behavior, the most obvious of which was heavy drinking and smoking. My one coworker would say “gay men can drink anyone under the table”, and I don’t think it was just empty boasting. I’ve also been hearing more about drug use, especially crystal methamphetamine. I would expect such things to trend with reports of mental illness, although the cause-and-effect would be difficult to untangle.

I also gathered that the young “gay lifestyle” places a great premium on physical appearance, which could explain eating disorders and spending hours in the gym each day. But this is not so different from mainstream culture these days, is it? Our culture as a whole places great emphasis on having a perfect body. Part of living the “gay lifestyle” seems to be placing your sexuality as your primary source of identity * and thus maybe an inordinate amount of attention is given to trying to make oneself physically attractive to improve your prospects, so to speak. But even that too is not uncommon in the rest of our culture as well. Everything is about sex. When you give sexuality primacy, over and above the human person as a whole, you will have unbalanced people. Does that make any sense?*

total sense. the problem today is that people are treating homosexuals like they are different. they are like everyone else, sinners. there is no black and white line between homosexuals and heterosexuals. there is just a spectrum of sin that leads to death. heavy drinking, murder, drug use, and homosexuality are all evil. any one of them leads to death. in the case of sexuality, homosexuality represents a total turning in on ones self, and a rejection of God. because the conjugal act is supposed to be holy, its reverse is even that much more evil. it is an afront to God and ushers in demonic influences which lead them to drinking and drug use and ultimately to murder. in fact, the top six serial murderers in this country were homosexuals.

I believe that by the very nature of them being homosexual…it goes without saying that they definitely are mentally ill…not likely, definitely.
