I taught a seventh grade religious ed class last year. We had a situation where a boy was being teased by being called “gay.” He liked musicals, Madonna, and was sensitive so maybe he did actually have Same sex attractions or not–it’s none of my business. I put a stop to the bullying immediately and my RE director had me explain the church’s teachings on homosexuality.
That being said, I know work at the school he is an 8th grader at. He came to me the other week and said he was being cyber-bullied by being called “gay” and “f****t.” I reported this to the dean right away because there are kids killing themselves over sexuality related cyber-bullying.
Now I am wracked with guilt over telling him about the church’s teachings on same sex acts. I feel as a catechist, I taught the truth but obviously this teasing is hurting him & what if my telling him the Church’s teachings factors into a suicide attempt?
Can anyone help me put my mind at ease.
