Hopefully the persecution discourages the practice of it.

At all kinds of international events, sporting and other, the participants are generally briefed about local customs and possible cultural differences. Any athlete who wants to participate in an international event should have the grace to behave appropriately and not to offend local customs. If you don’t want to be considerate of the local customs and laws, stay home. If you are that rude, you have no business representing your country abroad anyway.

Well, the Church seemed to be against the death penalty as a punishment.

More in the way persecuting rapists hopefully discourages the practice. Immoral things ought to be outlawed, law is a teacher after all. Executed? Obviously not. But illegal, certainly.

BTW, the Church doesn’t have an official position on this or any similar law.

“On December 11, after the Ambassador raised USG concerns, Cardinal Antonelli Ennio, President of the Pontifical Council for the Family, reaffirmed the Church’s position that legal approaches to homosexuality are inappropriate. Antonelli admitted that he had not followed the Uganda controversy closely, but agreed that Catholic bishops there or anywhere should not/not support the criminalization of homosexuality.”

“On December 8, DCM met with Monsignor Peter Wells, Assessor in the Vatican Secretariat of State’s Section for General Affairs (NSC equivalent) and raised these issues.Monsignor Wells expressed the Vatican’s view that the Church considers homosexuality sinful but does not believe it should be criminalized.”
 
I think Russia did the right thing by criminalizing “gay” propaganda. Our Pope said that we shouldn’t judge the homosexual, but he also said that the problem is when they lobby it. So I think he’s saying that although we shouldn’t judge homosexuals as individuals we can be against “gay” propaganda.

And the official Church position is that homosexuality should not be criminalized.

I understand that having a SSA is not a sin and therefore should not be a crime. But acting on it is a sin and I have no problem with it being a crime. At any rate, I can’t tell from that cable–which has at least one suspect comment in it–that that is not what is meant by giving the bishops leeway to decide. Along with the death penalty, life in prison as punishments being way too harsh.

How is this different from criminalizing pornography? Pornography is illegal in many places, and here in Canada, it is illegal to sell or show pornography to persons under the age of 18.

Sounds like common sense, to me. 🤷

Pornography, broadly speaking, is a tangible consumer product. Homosexuality and LGBT identity are not. There is no comparison.

What happened to freedom of speech? Are we next going to make it illegal for girls to play sports because it somehow makes them lesbian? Are we going to make it illegal for men to wear make-up? Are we going to jail the parents of 6 year-old boys who like to play with dolls because that --gasp-- might be gay propaganda?

Give me a break. The Vatican clearly opposes the criminalization of homosexuality, and the law is extremely immoral anyway. Besides, criminalization just makes people with SSAs more resolute in their behavior because they feel persecuted. I find it disgusting that any Catholic would support criminalization of a personal sin. Next thing you know, people on here will be promoting the criminalization of gluttony 🤷.
