Gays May Be Prosecuted at 2014 Olympics

The morality of the totalitarian mindset is always arbitrary. What is important is not whether 2+2 is 3 or 4 or 5, but that the answer is what the State says it is and it is incumbent on all to believe fully in the answer provided, even when the State changes its mind.

In terms of repugnance and sheer inanity from the Judeo-Christian perspective, the San Antonio decree is the worst of the two prosecutions.
Debatable. The San Antonio decree is utterly unjust and unChristian, yet how many have been killed as a result of it? How can it compare to killing human beings?

Also, how many have been jailed because of the San Antonio decree? How many fines have been levied? Does it have the effect of sanctioning murder of the undesirables? Sorry, but what passes for persecution in the U.S. is pretty weak sauce. Thinking being denied a position on a city commission is comparable to being thrown in jail because you seem too gay is a little much.

Stalinism didn’t happen overnight. This is a good first step toward ultimate Utopianism, where anyone can freely state his or her opinion in support of the government! 👍

That’s quite a conceptual jump!

I suppose it has something to do with people like Putin praising Stalin—but I was under the impression Putin and the gays were on OPPOSITE sides of the political fence, not the SAME side?

“In Russia it is now illegal to even speak about homosexuality around minors, much less openly display gay pride.” Would that include answering a question from a Russian young person about what one’s sexual orientation was? I wouldn’t put it past Putin to use youngsters to set up foreign athletes for arrest in such a way.

If a child ever asked me that, I would berate his parents for perverting his mind.

The law supposedly punishes those who engage in violence, but conveniently doesn’t prosecute violence against gays.

And there’s a difference. The law criminalizes websites, support groups, and all public signs of relationships in places minors could theoretically visit. This isn’t getting gay propaganda out of schools, or providing parents with opt-outs at the very least. This is telling a kid who’s gay: “if you make a support group for other kids with SSAs, we will prosecute you mercilessly and send you to jail.” This is telling two people in a same-sex relationship that they don’t have equal dignity as people because they sin.

Would you support a law criminalizing heretical speech? Then don’t support this bill :(. Work in the gay communities to help bring people back; don’t tell them that you’ve completely given up on them.
Excellent post.

This Russian law is mean-spirited and un-Christian.

There is another way of thinking about this.

There are lots and lots of abandoned children in Russia, including pre and post pubescent young men; blonde, blue-eyed, with that Slavic handsomeness. And if there are female prostitutes behind every telephone booth in Russia, and a savage AIDS problem arising from it, can there fail to be young men who will do anything at all to feed themselves or, perhaps, the drug habit that so plagues Russia?

The Olympics will attract every kind of panhandler there is in Russia, as well as crowds of potential predators looking for those who will prostitute themselves out of desperation.

Possibly Putin is just “sending a shot across the bow”; a warning to western homosexuals to prevent the event from becoming one big and embarrassing fleshpot for sexual predators? “Solicit minors here and we’ll arrest you. Don’t even make the inquiry.” Is that what the timing of his warning is all about?

Another Catholic who doesn’t support this.

This is really heavy-handed and means more government involvement and intrusion than I’d like to see.

Putin is a communist who is using his power in a different way in Russia. Russians are unprepared to accept the radical gay agenda. In America, homosexuals are the new favored class, and they are being used by OUR authoritarians to take down our institutional structures so they can advance their demented dream of total state power. Our people, unlike the Russians, have been primed to accept sexual deviance of virtually every kind through decades of mass media propaganda.
In both America and Russia, government powers are taking populist positions which coincide with the majority of passionate feeling on the issue. Neither government respects an individual’s liberty or freedom of conscience. Rob

This is not whether anyone on this forum supports it or not. As Americans we are to go into another nation, act respectable and abide by their laws like we are ambassadors and get out.

Would I support having the Olympics in a Muslim nation even though I don’t like their treatment of women.

Yes

🤷 Pagan’s not returned to explain himself/herself.
It could be s/he assumes that socially conservative Republicans in this country are more likely than not to support a crackdown by Putin and his government on homosexuality, which they regard as an immoral lifestyle.

The number of posters here willing to cozy up to Putin because he puts the veneer of religiosity and morality on his increasingly Soviet brand of totalitarianism is scary. Criminalizing the holding hands with someone of the same sex is madness. It’s bad enough that such a law exists in a freedom-hating and openly xenophobic nation like Russia, but the number of people who want it exported westward is truly disturbing.

Putin is the real deal. He is more “American” than Obama.

Putin’s not afraid of the Pink Mafia…that’s why you don’t like him.

As usual, I am completely disturbed by the law but even more appalled by the nasty, presumably uninformed, opinions in support of it. I don’t know what’s more upsetting.

I’ve heard and seen stuff about the armies of street kids and prostitutes in Russia. The Olympics are coming up. So you may well be right about that.

On the other hand, given the evident determination of the Russians to present an exemplary face to the world when they host the Olympics, is he really going to be content with enforcing such a law against the actual wrongdoers? Or will its implementation be a dragnet that snags many innocents?

And one can’t help but wonder, will he take forceful measures to have all street people nowhere in evidence in Moscow when the world’s media focus is there? If he’ll jail people for holding hands, he’ll jail bizarre and skanky-looking street kids to keep them out of the foreign media’s cameras, I’m sure.

I have little difficulty in imagining internment camps outside Moscow that may just stay full even after the Olympics are over. Putin, the former KGB officer, is entirely capable of it.

The saddest thing, from America’s perspective, is that this will give fuel to gay vitriol in this country, and provide militant American gays with political cover from which to further advance their own agenda in this country.

Very true.

Sadly, I am reminded of the well-known quote by Gandhi, “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” 😦
