Rome, Jun. 22 (CWNews.com) - Rock promoter Bob Geldorf has challenged Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) to join in his Live 8 concert, saying that the anti-poverty benefit is “where he [the Pope] belongs.”

Geldorf, who was in Rome to generate advance publicity for the Live 8 concert, said that he had asked the Pope to take part in the “Make Poverty History” event, which will be held in Edinburgh in July, to coincide with a meeting of leaders from the G8 industrial nations. But rock impresario said that he had not received a response from the Vatican.

“Benedict has great theologies,” Geldorf told reporters. “For many years he has been singing the songs of the poor. I want him to come and sing with us in Edinburgh.”

Wow, wouldn’t that be something. I say go for it. Except, don’t expect Benedict to hop up on stage with Pink Floyd or in place of Scary Spice (maybe leading U2 in a nice rendition of One).

And if the Pope’s presence turns people away, then we know they were their for the free show and not for the cause anyway.

Ridiculous, Geldof is trying to profit off the Pope, nothing more.

I tend to agree. I think it would be more of an accomplishment for Geldof to secure the Pope to his lineup.

Give him some credit…he is still pushing for the pope even after people like elton john were furious that Geldorf even talked to the Pope. I think it would show great outreach to the world… people would once again see the Leader of the Catholic out in the open. I bet you TV coverage would focus on him and the church more than any other performer. Could you imagine the pope dancing to like U2?The press loves that so I think it would be some great PR.

I would love to see him put in a appearance. I think U2’s 40 would be a good number for him to sing along too or anything from October like Gloria :dancing:
I don’t think Geldof envited the Pope as a stunt. He already told everyone if they wanted to participate they had to stay off their own soapbox, this isn’t the time for your political agenda (That means you Elton!). I think he really would like the Pope to get out his message about the hungry of the world to the MTV crowd. Otherwise it is mostly the same angry anti-establishment anti-Christain rant.

I hope the Pope doesn’t stoop to that. How many of those schlocky concerts have there been in my lifetime? Lots of noise & publicity & emotionalism today, all gone and dead tomorrow, like a tent revival.
It’s beneath the dignity of the Pope and the Church.

Also from Geldof:
“America doesn’t have a lack of empathy; they just don’t know the issues as well. Actually, today I had to defend the Bush Administration in France again. They refuse to accept, because of their political ideology, that he has actually done more than any American President for Africa. But it’s empirically so.”

I understand that Geldof told the performers that there would be no anti-Bush rants. I think he wants to stay focused on Africa - and not politics.

I’m liking this Geldorf guy the more I read this thread. Is he Catholic? Invite to the Pope and he defends Bush. Must at least be a Christian. Anyone know? Who wants to email him and find out 😛
