If you use feedback, you must make it explicit, in your OP, that you are going to quote members, and then you need to ask each individual person for their permission to use their response.
Yep. And you can put the uniform on a girl, take a picture of it, then use a paint or photo program to “clean out” the body. Dennis, Schoolbelles, and Educational Outfitters all do that

Good Point. I have 2 ideas.
  1. I would make all feedback anonymous - i could summarize people’s comments without disclosing anyone’s name or screenname.
  2. In the OP I would make it very clear upfront that the purpose of the poll and feedback would be for a school project in raising a discussion about our uniforms.

I think the anonymous feedback is good, but you still need to contact for permission 😃

I have photos taken right at school. It would be kinda hard to give people a sense of what these uniforms look like on us if I painted the person out of it.

Then block or masque the heads. We don’t want to violate anybody’s privacy- and from your description, these uniforms do that!

In our diocese (where most of the secondary schools are co-ed), the Cardinal recently changed policy of high school uniforms. Across the board, it is now a kilt, shirt and sweater/vest for girls, pants, shirt and sweater/vest for boys. A few of the schools had allowed girls to wear slacks, but I think after a visit to one of the schools, the Cardinal felt there was very little difference between the boys and girls. I think there is something to be said for girls looking like girls and boys looking like boys. There is also a policy in place where the students must have a form completed from the store where they purchase the uniform that it has complied with standards, as far as length.
My daughters attend a private girls (catholic but not diocesan) school where there is actually a spring and winter uniform. The winter uniform skirt is much heavier than the spring, and requires tights, not socks. It is pretty easy to roll up the skirt, but since it is an all girls’ school, I don’t see much of that going on. Another all girls private school close to here requires the jumper because the girls can not roll it up.
As far as riding on the bus with the kids from the public school, I think the boys have enough to look at with the girls who attend the public school. It would be impossible to roll up a jumper/kilt to be as short as the shortest mini skirt.
I think my senior daughter will miss her uniform next year when she has to pick out her outfits everyday.

Jumpers in HS??

I’m sorry but that is just plain silliness. A jumper is not at all appropriate or IMHO modest at that age. Why is a skirt not acceptable here?

I went through 12 years of Catholic school, and was never allowed to wear pants. But, after 3rd grade the jumpers were ditched for skirts. In HS each incoming class got to choose which plaid they wanted for their class, which made us feel a bit more involved (at an age where control is everything). I really don’t thinking wearing a skirt is that big of a deal. There are ways to keep the legs warm in winter (tights, cute leg warmers), and in HS it’s not like you are going outside much during the school day.

I certainly think gender discrimination is a bit far fetched here though. Sounds more like it’s just a matter of bad school policy.

As for your question, you are attending their school on their terms, or not at all. You might do as the young women in the above story did, but otherwise you have no authority to force the school to change policy.
I am sorry but a school has no authority to require girls to dress in ways which make them feel sexually exposed, which is the case with jumpers in situations like the Opening Poster describes.

There is no justification for making girls feel sexually exposed and there’s no good to be achieved that way, no good to be a fair price for that.

Especially a Catholic school should make sure girls aren’t feeling sexually exposed.

Making girls wear what makes them, and makes them feel, sexually exposed, for the sake of appearances of conservatism (and modesty therefore?) in clothing, would be hypocrisy.

Also, if the uniforms show too much and the girls don’t want to wear them, isn’t enforcing such uniforms actually illegal? A form of sexual molestation?

Not like the kind of jeans girls typically wear are much better when it comes to fitting and showing the contours, but at least trousers don’t ride up.

I’m just trying to understand why the girls won’t just buy a larger size, let down the hem, or something so the jumper doesn’t ride up and so they don’t feel so sexually exposed. I wore a jumper through 8th grade and didn’t ever have any problems with it being immodest (and I was already developed around that age). I may not be imagining the jumper the OP is talking about correctly maybe?.. I just know there were gilrls in my class that were “developed” too and would wear their jumpers more “form-fitting” but it was their choice to buy them that way. With that said, I do think it would be a good idea to lobby for skirts and vests, which would keep in tradition but at the same time avoid having young women in girls jumpers.

I’m not sure I magine the outfit correctly, either, but I’m sure that if the girls even merely subjectively feel sexually exposed, then that’s a real problem - and doesn’t the OP mention some reaction from boys? That would be an objective indicator. No one should ever be forced to wear anything he feels immodest in (I’d see that as a form of institutional molestation), especially not by a Catholic institution.

How on earth could this show too much, unless it was purposely hemmed up too short? I have seen these in the uniform shops. They specifically come very long. If you see a young woman wearing one that is above her knee she had it altered, or perhaps inherited it from a much shorter person. If that was the case, and the girl couldn’t afford a new uniform, I am sure the school would help her family somehow.
Catholic schools and uniforms go hand in hand, at least in my area. Of course some kids will take advantage to alter the uniform as they wish, but for the most part, I see kids wearing the uniform within regulation.

That doesn’t look like what the OP is describing. The photo you have posted shows something that looks to be tailored to a woman’s shape. It sounds as though the OP’s school has the girls wear larger sizes of the same style that elementary girls wear, with no allowances for a woman’s shape. Again, I see nothing wrong or un-uniform about the girls wanting to wear uniforms that don’t cause boys to stare and cat-call, and certainly nothing wrong with wanting to at least wear tights in winter.

I have no problem whatsoever with the dress from the picture, but I second the belief that it’s not what the OP was talking about… Even ifit is, well, then still no one should be forced to wear anything that makes him feel exposed. In this instance perhaps the lack of sleeves could make some girls feel bad. Some sleeveless dresses stick out a bit and show bra straps, too.

If girls feel dresses are bad because they show hip or breast contours (which makes boys reacts), well, then the problem is with their feminine shapes emerging, not the clothes. Girls need some good talking from mothers and boys need some subtlety hammered into their heads.

I think this is more like what the OP is describing to us. If it is, then if it is NOT cut for the young adult figure, and if the uniform company controls the hem length, it is a big problem with modesty.

I had a choice of this one, and a drop-waist for my girls, who are in primary grades. I was going get this one, thinking I could alter if for the elder one when she started wearing skirts, but it won’t alter. Only a few of the girls at their new school have the v-vest jumper. It gaps, it bunches up, it creeps up, the sides on the v-vest are wide open- and that’s on little girls! I can’t imagine what it would do to young women!

So, I got this one instead:

But this is clearly a “baby” jumper, made for girls in primary grades.

Yes, ours is similar to the one quoted the “baby jumper” but what’s worse is ours does not have the pleats to widen it out at the bottom. Its straight material, so there is no flexibility when sitting or bending.

And they do not come from the uniform store as long as some would think. I don’t know anyone at my school who as altered them.

I am going to post a Poll with a photo slide show taken at my school to show forum members exactly what the modesty issues are.

It would deeply appreciate to get forum member feedback in the Poll and comments concerning our actual uniform.

I am going to post it today or tomorrow at the latest.

The “baby” dropwaist, on grown young ladies, without pleats for extra room to move???:bigyikes: There is no material TO alter!!! And it is made for little girls, looks cute on llittle girls. I have never seen it in a school past the fourth grade!!! Without the pleats, you gals must be very good at gymnastics to cover the gaps!!! My mother once “bought” me something called a pencil skirt, very out of fashion in the early 1970s. I wore it twice before a bottle bleach happened to it. It sounds just the way your jumpers do. And it did make guys look, and not kindly, but leering.

I will be there as soon as you post the poll!!!

I can’t even imagine this. What were they thinking? No, there isn’t any way you could tailor this without buying it several sizes too large and undertaking a major structural overhaul to put in appropriate darts, and even then it probably wouldn’t fit right if you were wider in the hips. Unless you’re a fantastic sewer, that’s a lot of extra money to spend at the tailor, and if it comes from the store too short in the legs, there’s probably not even much of a hem allowance to let down.

My grade school had jumper from 1-5th (now its K-5th) and then 6-8th girls had a skirt. Girls were only allowed to wear pants from November 1st to like March 1st. Once in awhile, it would get extremely cold (for me, extremely cold is high 30s or low to mid 40s) before November 1st and my mom would tell me to wear my slacks and write a note for me explaining why. I hated recess outdoors when the wind was strong and it was freezing out, even with a coat on. Tights or leggings would not have kept me warm at all

My high school had a different dress code, but now they have a school uniform because there were often kids that didn’t dress appropriately when I went there.

As most of you already noted, the poll was completely removed and our young person has been banned.

I don’t know the whole story. I feel badly, because if this girl was real, she just lost all her data except the photo slide show on photobucket. And if she wasn’t real, well, she sure fooled me.
