Gender pronouns in the workplace

Oh I get what you’re saying, I really do! It is quite rude, but if someone were to assume that person called you Pup instead of Puppers not because they’re cluelessly rude but instead they have an inherent bias against women named Puppers, or that they wish to do actual harm to women named Puppers is, in my opinion, over the top reactionary. That’s what some of these transactvists really do (“Here’s Why Misgendering Trans People Is an Act of Violence”).
 
Here’s what I would put in my signature if forced to go along with this silliness:

Jane R. Smith
PGPs: You/Your/Yours

Because who refers to anyone in the third person when talking to them anyway?
Be like the child in “The Emperor’s New Clothes”–someone has to point out how stupid the whole thing is, even though it’s obvious.

Come to think of it, a lot of languages have a formal and informal second person pronouns, (e.g. tu and vous in French). Perhaps these people should start proclaiming their preference just as loudly?

In my experience, people who live their lives in a completely self-absorbed and entitled manner usually consider any transgression of their wishes ‘an act of violence’.

I agree. Folks act like others are completely set out and hell bent on ruining their day over a pronoun. For the most part the average Joe or Jane isn’t malicious. They’re just people.

I wish we would go back to this, the second person familiar. Every other Western language has it(tu in the Romance languages, du in German and the Scandinavian languages), but for some reason, in English we now address everyone as ‘you’, which is second person formal (usted in Spanish, vous in French, etc). Why we have decided to be so formal with one another is a mystery to me.

I just want to say that you’ve made my afternoon by correctly ascribing formality to ‘you’ instead of ‘thou’, unlike most people. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to correct fellow Catholics when they start lecturing someone about proper respect when they use ‘you’ instead of ‘thou’ in reference to God.
 
Well, we were just talking about how in some parts every single male is a ‘sir’ despite not being knighted. Perhaps the same thing happened with making everyone a ‘you’?

YES! The point about the KJV’s use of second person familiar when addressing the Almighty is NOT that it is respectful or not, but that it shows our love for the Creator. We are, after all, mere infants in comparison to Him(not even that, really), and young puppies do not stand on ceremony with their humans: they jump all over them, wagging their tails and licking the human’s face in an irresistible show of affection. I like to think that is the effect of second person familiar in the KJV and, for that matter, in our own Catholic prayers.

“Thou” implies a close relationship, while “you” is more distant. That is why “thou” is/was traditionally considered more appropriate for addressing God, because it assumes a relationship with our Father–not because it is more formal, because it is not. Like addressing your dad as Father or Dad, addressing someone as “thou” is both respectful and familiar. (I’m agreeing with you.)
