What is your take on these verses?

St. Paul - 2 THES 3:14 If anyone does not obey our word as expressed in this letter, take note of this person not to associate with him, that he may be put to shame.

St. Paul - 2 TIM 3:1-5 But understand this: there will be terrifying times in the last days. People will be self-centered and lovers of money, proud, haughty, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, irreligious, callous, implacable, slanderous, licentious, brutal, hating what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, as they make a pretense of religion but deny its power. Reject them.

St. Paul - TITUS 3: 10-11 After a first and second warning, **break off contact **with a heretic, realizing that such a person is perverted and sinful and stands self-condemned.

St. John - 2 JN 9-11 Anyone who is so “progressive” as not to remain in the teaching of the Christ does not have God; whoever remains in the teaching has the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him in your house or even greet him; for whoever greets him shares in his evil works.
Good point. The answer would depend on whether one has a conscience formed in accordance with the perennial teachings of the Church, or one formed using the more reletavistic modern theology of the past several decades. There is an insidious "ends justify the means " mentality at work both within and without the Church that i find dangerous.

Thank you for answering my questions. I am happy that these celebrities have given so much money to the poor. I’m glad their generosity was acknowledged by the Holy Father. We know how much he appreciates it when people help the poor. I hope this acknowledgement encourages more people to give to the poor. By this action, these people are demonstrating a Work of Mercy, so I don’t think the above quotes apply to them. They are being rewarded for demonstrating love of neighbor, which is Christ-like.

Pope Francis seeks common ground with all human beings. He has visited with Muslim leaders, refugees (not all were Christians), gay rights leaders, Protestants, and even politicians (:p). His actions are consistent with missionary Jesuits throughout history (was it scandalous when Jesuits learned the cultures, languages, and religions of Native Americans to better teach them about God? Were trinkets given to Natives to encourage their faith scandalous?). Our numbers have been reduced and we should view ourselves more as missionaries in a strange land. Pope Francis is out there seeking the lost sheep, just as Jesus did.

Many non-Catholic people are given awards and trinkets by our Pope. He is not, and cannot, give them the true gift that is God Himself (the Eucharist) because they are not practicing Catholics. Are we going to be jealous of trinkets, handshakes, and smiles when we are offered the treasure of Christ daily? Be glad to be safe in the fold and not one of those lost sheep that the Holy Father is trying to bring back.

Here are some verses that I think are applicable to this situation, particularly with respect to the two apostate Catholics, Hayek and Clooney. They should not be receiving awards from the Pope.

I agree, and Jesus warned times like this would come, things like this would transpire and most importantly he even warned there would be many people who do recognize whats going on.(see things for what they truly are).

All I can say is, the enemy is extremely cunning and intelligent, he knows what kinds of things will fool a large majority of people.

Thanks, Catholic Farmer. I appreciate your points. Still, I wonder how Pope Francis is living out admonitions like those set forth below when he gives special awards to apostates like Hayek & Clooney - not just people of other faiths, but people who have turned their backs on the Catholic faith in particular and on Jesus Christ altogether?

Thank you for leading us back to the gospels. I have a few things to add:

Has Catholicism been reduced to just serving the poor, not judging anything, marginalizing God’s laws and Church doctrines/dogmas in favor of loosely defined concepts of love and mercy, and following the winds of the day? Have we forgotten about the gospels, the Tradition and teaching of the Church?

The examples of the saints and the blood of the martyrs exemplified the clarity, simplicity and steadfastness of the catholic faith. We need to guard ourselves against confusion and discord.

The Church has always been missionary. But above all, the Church belongs to Christ!!! Serving the poor, comforting the afflicted, and performing all the good work of love and mercy must be rooted in our faith in Christ and the Church. It is through the grace of Christ that transform us toward holiness and faithfulness. All these things must be accomplished in Christ and through Christ, and they can not be in conflict of each other, nor they can lead to confusion about the faith.

The pope is promoting scandal? I think not. Maybe you should read through the other thread about not judging.

Some days it sure seems we are headed that way very rapidly. We must resist it.

Yes, well, these weren’t “trinkets” given to natives to try to open their hearts to Christ. These were pontifical awards given to apostates to hold them up as examples who should be emulated. Giving these people awards does nothing to bring them back but merely confirms them in their ways and causes scandal for believers.

I guess I just can’t see the Holy Apostles giving pontifical awards to apostates who have rejected Christ for atheism or Buddha or Ramtha. We know exactly what they would have done; see the quotes from St. Paul and St. John above. I guess that’s what bothers me about it: it seems un-apostolic.

If you need a couple of more quotes, try these:

Jesus - MT 18:15-17 "If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

St. Paul - EPH 5:6-8 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not associate with them, for once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.

To further amplify your point, the books of Palms and Proverbs taught us about guarding ourselves agains wickedness and evil doers. I am reminded of the teaching in Matthew. We are sheep among wolves. So be as gentle as doves, but as clever as serpents.

I will continue to put my faith in Christ’s promise that the Holy Spirit will protect the Church, and the gate of hell will not prevail against it. Confusion is a fertile ground for Satan to do his evil work. The Church has triumphed over efforts to distort and confuse the faith for over 2,000 years. Let’s pray God’s will be done.

Jesus met with sinners. We have to remember that.

How do we know that the Pope’s meeting with these people might not have led to the beginning of a deep epiphany within them? Never forget the power of Grace. 🙂

How much help would the entire world need if Jesus only met with the righteous, and the Popes did the same.

Imagine the powerful witness even one of those people would make.

Wow, I don’t know how I missed that article:shrug:, but Clooney’s so over-the-top suave that he’s gotten to meet a lot of powerful people. I read somewhere that he and his gorgeous wife are pals with the Obamas. Hmmm. I’m wondering now if he’s Catholic? Does anyone happen to know? I know Mark Wahlberg is a very, very devout Catholic, at least from what I’ve read, and I strongly associate both him and Clooney together because of The Perfect Storm and that Iraqi gold film with Ice-T… Anyway, he’s really blessed he got to hang out with Francis…

Richard Gere is a Buddhist, George Cloney although raised Catholic declares himself an agnostic but states that he leans more towards atheism, Its on goodle Pope Francis awarding these people the Olive Award. What does the Pope or whomever contributes to making such a decision use as criteria…money ?

…and Selma Hyak (although not in the photo op, which was so aptly pointed out) denounces all ‘organized religion’ as she refers to it…Pax

I have read here on CA many times that if one is baptized a Roman Catholic, the Church counts you as her own. Perhaps the Pope used that as a starting point for honoring good people who have done good works.

If one public apostatizes, then he needs to reconcile with the Church. Then, it’d be imprudent to honor an apostate, lest the pope lead the little ones to scandal, about which Our Lord promised an horrendous punishment.

I still wonder how is it that it is normal here to call persons " apostates" ," heretics" and that sort of language. We do not use it…at all…,and much less use these words to publicly skin persons alive… !!
God help us when our turn comes to be judged…hope St Peter does not have loudpeakers at the door to read out the reasons why we should not be even making the queue to Heaven !!!

Thank you for your comment Gracie. As a non-Catholic, I tend to pick up on such words right away, and they do not sit well at all. Isn’t charity highly regarded? One can always question – ‘I wonder why the Pope chose to honor a person who is not practicing the faith anymore…’ but to sling such words that are intended to be nasty, well, I would hope to find better here.

Clooney, Gere and Hayek are all apostates according to the definition set forth in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Each was formerly a Christian. Clooney & Hayek are former Catholics.

Pope Francis seems to be going out of his way to make the point that there is goodness worthy of papal approval even in unrepentant, grave sinners and apostates who turn their backs on Jesus Christ. In this case, it is their service to the poor. I don’t agree that it is a good idea.

Yes, we (the Church) do use “that sort of language.” I realize it grates on the ears of some, however, it is right there in the Catechism and it is entirely appropriate to use the correct terminology to describe a situation. Much as we might want to pretend otherwise, there are people who are apostates and heretics. Clooney and Hayek are apostate Catholics who have publicly turned their backs on Jesus Christ and rejected him.

As St. Peter (whom you cite) said in 2 PT 2:

17 These people are waterless springs and mists driven by a gale; for them the gloom of darkness has been reserved. 18 For, talking empty bombast, they seduce with licentious desires of the flesh those who have barely escaped from people who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, though they themselves are slaves of corruption, for a person is a slave of whatever overcomes him. 20 For if they, having escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of [our] Lord and savior Jesus Christ, again become entangled and overcome by them, their last condition is worse than their first. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment handed down to them. 22 [l]What is expressed in the true proverb has happened to them, “The dog returns to its own vomit,” and “A bathed sow returns to wallowing in the mire.”

CCC 2089 Incredulity is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it. “Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same; *apostasy *is the total repudiation of the Christian faith; schism is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him.”
