Actually not.

Remember where he is: Germany. The subject of Shoah is soooo tetchy there that almost anything ones says to compare anything else to it will bring down the wrath of the Jewish community. The words, holocaust, genocide and Shoah are “theirs” so to speak in national parlance.
I am not familiar with the term Shoah. Must be related to the Holocaust. Can you explain?

Also, great suggestion about complimenting the Cardinal. It is hard in this day and age to stand up for our Catholic values–even a Catholic Cardinal is criticized for doing so.

Shoah is another world for the Holocaust. You will see many sites with both words separated by a slash. (Holocaust/Shoah)

By now he has been beaten on by the press, on the phone, by his PR office, by the Nuncio and a few raised eyebrows from hhis peers. I suspect he was also left swinging in the wind when he took on Kasper. He tried, if we want good behavior, then we’ve got to affirm it - it encourages the person who took the flack and enables the silent to at least set up a murmur in the background.

We all know the feeling, the world is 'agin you for whatever reason not a kind word nor an encouraging pat on the shoulder, you feel beaten, like a Don Quixote and suddenly some kind soul says, I’m so glad you said or did that, it really needed to b e said. Puts a whole new light on it.

Reminds me of the American teacher who apologized for using the word niggardly. There is nothing for this man to apologize for and certainly not to the Greens
These days we live in a world where black is white, white is black and 2+2 don’t always equal four but “whatever feels right”.

This man is a brave servant of Jesus, but for many people the truth is bothered, what a pity?

rather than send letters overseas, send them to the White House.

After the ward, the allies imposed a “de-nazification program” on Germany. When the occupation government gave way to the federal republic, most of this was left in place at the insistence of the allies. One of the principles is the absolute recognition that the evil of Nazism is to be universally accepted as a social consensus. As terrible as abortion is, it is a simple fact that it is not an evil recognized by social consenus. Therefore the comparison of any matter of social division to Nazism is not acceptable in Germany.

The Cardinal, I presume, is an intellegent and articulate man. He could have found another way of making his point.

P.S. To their credit, the occurrance of abortion in Germany, due to a variety of factors such as some legal restrictions and extensive social welfare available to women in problem pregnancies, is relativly low. In fact, lower than in the USA **pre-**Roe v. Wade.

katherine2–Nonetheless, what is the purpose of writing to the White House about this issue? The allies “de-nazification program” was post-WWII. Germany is a completely sovereign nation today. I am confused.

We should be very careful in pointing fingers as abortions are rampant in North America also. In other words, there is no difference between us and Hitler and Stalin, etc. as regards to disregard of life. North Americans are allowing it and truly, there is no excuse. No more excuse than Hitler had…actually, no different than any suicide bomber who decides to blow himself up alongside anybody near him. We blow up fetuses by the thousands everyday in our sophisticated socitey…

Ah, but that’s not the point, is it? After all, you have just said the same thing, and presumably no one is asking for your head!

The bigger question is: Could a bishop, cardinal or whatever, make the same statement here without running into the same trouble?

Would a bishop, cardinal or whatever make the same statement here?

Ironic: “Holocaust” was a common word, now taken over, as has been said, by one group; “gay” was a fine word, now also taken over by a group; “choice” is rapidly becoming something other than what it once meant, thanks to another group. 😦

Thanks, HagiaSophia,

For anyone who may also want to email the cardinal: At the end of the message one has the choice of either clicking on “Abbrechen” or “Absenden”…You may all know this, but I had to do some checking to figure it out: Click on the word with “send” in it! I think the other word means something like “to break (in).”

At least mine hasn’t come back to me…so far!

No one here maybe …yet. But in my own personal life, I can assure I have received enough darts. And for many other reasons, trust me, when it comes to the Faith. A prophet is never accepted in their village. These are not my words but those of my spiritual director. Would you want his e-mail???

I am a lay person and not a Bishop…and a woman to boot! I wouldn’t win a popularity contest and that counts for something…

Blessings,
Shoshana

I don’t know whether anyone noticeyou had comments on the Cardinal story to send them in via their provided link; I used it to let them know how I felt also. I figured the more support they see, the less reckles these stories will be. The Cardinal was right on.

I don’t know whether anyone noticed but the newspaper running the story said at the bottom that if you had comments on the Cardinal story to send them in via their provided link; I used it to let them know how I felt also. I figured the more support they see, the less reckless these stories will be. The Cardinal was right on.

According to my 2003 edition German-English dictionary, “abbrechen” means to break off or in computers “to abort” --which is sort of a bad pun, given this discussion about the German Cardinal’s comments on abortion! I suspect that it means “delete”. So you are right. Press “Absenden” which means to send!

Sorry. I don’t know how to make my question any clearer.
