PARIS - Pope Benedict will honour the 16th century Protestant reformer Martin Luther on his state visit to Germany next month, but Roman Catholic officials are warning Lutherans not to expect breakthroughs on issues dividing them.

During the Sept 22-25 visit, the German-born pontiff plans to stress ecumenical co-operation, meet Protestant leaders and tour a monastery in Erfurt where Luther once worked and prayed. He will also address the German parliament in Berlin.

The visit has prompted calls from Protestants for him to allow joint communion services and grant their churches full recognition. The tone is mostly positive — one theologian even suggested making him “honorary spokesman” for all Christianity.

But senior Catholic clerics have begun warning Protestants not to get their hopes up too much.

Just a question, but has the excommunication against Luther ever been lifted? If not, why would the pope be “honoring” the man? 🤷
 
I don’t like the sound of honoring Luther…

This is the man who instead of trying to reform and purge corruption from within remaining faithful in the process had chosen to establish his own church which brought forth decades of religious warfare and the beginning of anti-Catholic secularism in Europe.

The only thing worth honoring is the counter-reformation that his destructive choice brought forth. Which means the only honor that should be given is to God and his servants on Earth who proved that good can come forth from an evil action.
 
I wouldnt read too much into this. the holy father is just doing what Jesus did. He is seeking the lost. of course lutherans are probably thinking something different. this is probably making them feel important. which is contrary to what is in the mind of the holy father.
