Over the next 10 days Greece must come up with a further 13 billion euros of savings to qualify for the next tranche of funding. Without it, Greece runs out of money by the end of November. When Mrs Merkel met the Greek president there was a moment of reality. He said, speaking on behalf of the Greek people: “We’re exhausted.”

hahaha. They resent Germany?

It’s coming to the US next if we don’t stop this downward debt spiral now.

And her title is Chancellor, not Mrs.

I’m reading Blitz now, story of one week in London in September 1940. Not sure if I can stomach another book about my vicious ancestors for at least another month.:o
I doubt that you had SS troopers in your family. Serving in the German Armed Forces was not dishonorable of itself. Even the Pope was an antiaircraft loader in either the Army or the Air Force. (AA was usually a Luftwaffe task.)

No, but what Germany did in the London Blitz is abominable. Among with all the rest they did.

Ack-Ack is defensive.

What the Americans did to Hamburg, Dresden, Cologne, and other such cities was no less abominable. Millions of civilians incinerated. No wonder Air Marshal Harris did not receive any awards after the war and was referred to, by his own men, as “Butcher Harris.”

BTW, the Allies lost more men over Germany than did the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps lose throughout the entire Pacific campaign.

Very sad when war comes to this. I find very few Germans, however, who condemn this American action.

I know my aunt, who lived in Hamburg at the time, said everyone used to carry a suitcase of their most precious valuable to work everyday. She carried pictures of her family, along with a fresh change of clothing.

How exhausted could they be? Don’t they only work 11 months out of the year?😃

The Greek government is trying to sell of a large number of its properties to raise the billions of euros which it is expected to come up with.
Got some cash to spend? How about a piece of the Greek islands of Rhodes or Corfu? Or a royal palace, a marina, or even a consulate building?
As Greece is struggling to appease international lenders and live up to the conditions of its bailout, the debt-choked nation is speeding up the sale of state assets by expanding its privatization program.
Greece’s state fund (Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund or HRADF) now has more than 70,000 state-owned properties on offer for investors and it aims to generate 19 billion euro ($24.5 billion) by 2015 via the sales.
The state’s properties include a 119,800 square-meter peninsula with a palace hotel complex and a marina, a 450,000 square-meter area in Rhodes with an 18-hole golf course and four miles of beach, a coastline in Corfu, an airport area in Athens and the 2004 Athens Olympics broadcast center.

Greece’s ministries of justice, health, education and culture are also trying to rent other properties under their jurisdiction.

Obviously, the big sale won’t help much to meet the short term deadline, but Greece seems to be making a effort.

If the Greeks have sense, they’ll leave the EU, return to the Drachma, and end there membership in NATO. It’ll still be an uphill fight, but sovereignty is best.

Quoting from the BBC article
The number of banners depicting Mrs Merkel as a Nazi were relatively few. Yet when a group of protesters arrived in Nazi uniforms to suggest the present government in Berlin was carrying out Nazi type-policies they were widely applauded.
That is fairly ironic, considering that it is Greece which recently elected a contingent of neo-Nazis to its parliament.

With support from 22% of Greeks, they are the third most popular political party.

They draw a parallel between the occupation and the current government…how??
Because the Greek police forces all but turned the security of the nation over to the Neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn due to a lack of resources. They’ve been running amok violently attacking non-Greeks ever since without repercussions.

American WWII hero General Curtis Lemay said:

"Killing Japanese didn’t bother me very much at that time… I suppose if I had lost the war, I would have been tried as a war criminal… Every soldier thinks something of the moral aspects of what he is doing. But all war is immoral and if you let that bother you, you’re not a good soldier."pbs.org/wgbh/amex/bomb/peopleevents/pandeAMEX61.html

I would say that the Allied bombing of Dresden - first by 770 Lancasters and then by 500 B17s - was a war crime of epic proportions. Estimates of the dead in the firestorm range from 35,000 to 250,000. The Associated Press Correspondent from Supreme Allied Headquarters in Paris described this “unprecedented assault in daylight on the refugee-crowded capital, fleeing from the Russian tide in the East,” and declared it showed that “the long-awaited decision had been taken to adopt deliberate terror-bombing of German populated centres as a ruthless expedient to hasten Hitler’s doom.” heretical.com/miscella/veale.html

That would probably be a relief to the Germans.

Interestingly, in one of his books, Paul Theroux maintained that Greece is not really a European nation at all, but thoroughly Asiatic; part of the Middle East in his opinion. He did argue his position pretty well, I thought.

Interesting how opinion of Germans has changed over the last few decades.

I did a research paper in college on the subject and came to the same conclusion. Of course, that was 35 years ago when we were still using the card catalog in the university library to “look things up.”

Signed

Old fogey 😛

Interesting that you did. I recall reading where some person or other wrote (half in jest, maybe, but no more than half) that there is more of classic Greek culture and heritage in Edinburgh than there is in Athens.

War is indeed Hell.
