German churchmen are backpedalling away from Pope Benedict’s assertion that condoms are likely to make the problem of AIDS worse. Hamburg Catholic bishop Hans-Jochen Jaschke has written an article saying that the Pope is wrong to oppose the use of condoms to halt the spread of AIDS in Africa.
While excommunication is probably unreasonable in this case, shouldn’t a suspension be in order?

I think the article is exagerating the differences between the pope and these German bishops.

The pope said that making condoms more widely available is not the solution to the problem of AIDS.

The bishop quoted in the article addressed a different question, which was about the moral choice for homosexual couples engaged in the grave sin of sodomy when one partner is known to have HIV. Yes, the church teaches clearly that contraception is wrong, and that sodomy is wrong. But the Church has never clearly given an answer to the question “if I’m going to commit sodomy, and I have HIV, is it more or less wrong for me to use a condom?”

Humanae Vitae talks about sex within a marriage and about contraception. A condom between two gay men is not contraception. Their sexual relations are grave sins with or without a condom.

Good points, Neal.

The Vatican should not answer questions like that. These are loaded questons. The Church cannot answer a queston like that without being on some level being seen to be complicit in the sin.
If a Catholic has no regard for sin, if an HIV infected person has no consideration for the risk he puts his sexual partners into through the sex act, these are no longer moral questions but merely medical ones.

It is just not up to the Church to tell people how best to play the odds in these games of Russian Roulette.

It does seem that the media is desperately trying to make the Church look stupid.

This is a good article where a Harvard professor who is an expert in this field backs up the Pope catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=15445 I bet you wont see it on TV though!

I do not think we need an answer. We know it is wrong. It is wrong intrinsically and extrinsically. It furthers an evil act. It allows one to “think” they are safe to keep acting badly. It supports condom producers. It is wrong on many levels.

Take a look at this.

I wonder if they are the same churchmen who opposed to pope on appointing a new bishop…He was a good priest and taught the truth as scripture reveals it…He resigned, or declined perhaps is a better word…

Come to find out the priest who spearheaded the controversy has a girlfriend who is his mistress, and he said others also did

Why am I not impressed with what some churchmen think?
