Germany’s Catholic church has not been immune to abuse allegations over the years but, until now, abusing priests were portrayed as isolated black sheep.
But that has changed with revelations of systematic abuse at Canisius College, founded in 1925 and still one of Berlin’s most exclusive schools.
Last month the principal, Fr Klaus Mertes, wrote, in an open letter to former pupils, of his shock and shame at the abuse allegations he had heard after being approached by former pupils. Worse, he said, was how an internal investigation revealed its systematic nature, encouraged by the school’s “culture of looking the other way”.
The Canisius allegations concern three Jesuit priests now in their 60s, all of whom are no longer in the order.

This is all too depressing for words.

We are all pitiful sinners!

Thank God for Divine Mercy!

Do you love your children, your husband, your wife, your family, your friends, your enemies, …no matter how they fail? If not, you should because God loves you no matter how terribly you fail!!!

Jesus came to die for our sins & we must not expect human perfection, but, as the the prayer during Mass after the Sign of Peace says; "Look not upon our sins, but on the Faith of your Church…"

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

Wow, this one hits very close to home for Benedict XVI…😊

I wonder if we didn’t have the perfect storm; men with a question of their sexual identity
going into a heirarchal setting where they really weren’t the servant of those they were leading. The perpetrators would have grown up in the Church of my youth where the priest represented power. It was not unusual for parents to tell a difficult child that if he didn’t shape up they were going to send him to Father. At least that was my Mom.

what has happened to the priesthood? i remember teh 70’s when priests were respected and had authority. and never heard of a priest ever sexually abusing any children. at least at my home country. we all looked up to them as saints. i remember when i heard that the priest whipped my brother with the cord he worn around his waist. families agreed with priests, we were all part of one family. today, it seems we have been so far apart. whatever happened to the priesthood?

There has to come a point where these kind of allegations are so common place that they stop sending people reeling. Who is really surprised by this any more?

Sadly, I don’t think there are many that are surprised or even shocked anymore. Just depressed at the apparent universality of it.

Isn’t there something in Genesis about it not being good for man to be alone?

I’m not saying the the celibacy rule for priests is completely bad. But for every shining priest it forges there are bound to be a few that come away alittle worse for wear. Is it the celibacy rules fault? No, but it does contribute to producing priests that seek power or sexual release anyway they can. Ultimately, though this will just have to be the state of affairs since the celibacy rule is Dogma and that CAN NEVER be changed after so many centuries.

So get used to it disgraceful though it is.

Er…the celibacy rule is not dogma - it is a discipline within the Latin Rite. And there are married men who have become priests.

So you would rather have these men abusing their own children? I don’t see how marriage fixes this or stops pedophiles from being attracted to the priesthood.

so, you have a solution for this problem.
so, what is your solution for marriage clergy of protestants congregations and married man who abuse children?

and dont tell me you dont know about them.

One theory is that these men often entered seminary at a time when their sexuality was just starting to develop at around 14 or 15 years. Although higher learning continues, often with an intellect far superior to the average man, their sexual development is stunted in the adolescent phase.

With no legitimate sexual outlet, these children that they have virtually unlimited access to become sexual peers. Since all sexuality for them is seen as as off limits, sex with children is viewed much in the same way as sex with an adult woman would be. From a celibate’s point of view it can become easy to put all sexual activity into the same box.

It becomes a perfect storm.

How can i even dare say a word against their action when i’m not too convinced mine has always been better? “…Look not on our sins but on the faith of your church…” that always comforts me and permits me to get up and try again when i fall heavily or when some others’ fall disgust me.

*According to the various articles and news reports I’ve read…and this article here too…these things were happening back in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. These scandals are just coming to light ‘‘today,’’ but they happened a long time ago. I don’t understand why this is happening…I don’t understand how so many priests could have been transferred, and why so many in higher positions allowed this to happen. I can see one or two isolated cases…but this is getting out of hand, and has hurt the Church so much. I think this is largely why the image of the priesthood has been so negatively affected, today. 😦 Have to keep praying…and I pray for all men seeking the priesthood, that they become good examples to their flocks and for all the victims in these cases, that they find healing in their grief. *

Amen to that.

*That’s an interesting theory. I can see that, but I believe that many of those in these scandals who abused kids, entered the seminary with psychological issues already present, but were never brought to light. They became priests with these issues already in place, and thus why they were attracted to the priesthood…a place of authority…a place where not getting married wouldn’t be questioned…a place where they would have access to children on a daily/weekly basis…alone. Teachers, boyscout leaders, etc…show similiar patterns, and behaviors…they pick places where children are, and they will be trusted because of their position of authority. I think what is so unnerving for many of us reading these, is that a priest, unlike a boyscout leader, takes an oath to be a representative of Christ on earth.

I don’t judge or condemn these men…I pray for them, and our Church, and all men seeking to become priests. They need our prayers. I pray for the victims, to heal. The problem I have is with those who transferred all of these priests…turning a blind eye to what was happening. I pray for them also, but they should be removed from their places of authority, if they are still in those positions, today. No one who allowed such horrors to go on…knew about it and did nothing…should be permitted to remain as part of the clergy. *

Germany, England, Ireland and Scotland, Australia, the United States: a common element of the last two generations has been the misguided and dissenting preponderance of touchy-feely church music, specifically “hymns.”

Because of the illicit introduction of Protestant hymns, the gay-friendly St. Louis Jesuit songs, Oregon “Catholic” Press songs, etc, a trajectory away from honest, communal worship of God, especially in the Eucharist, was established under “Ecclesiastical approbation.” These touchy-feely, “lite” hymns were notable for their effeminate qualities, including their textual abandonment of doctrine and soft-swingin’ musical style. Truly it can be said that hymnody was the vehicle by which our Catholic faithful sang their way out of the Catholic churches.

So that you can yourself make a comparison between the above-mentioned hymnody versus authentic contemporary Catholic hymnody, I invite you to visit the Nicholas-Maria Publishers website at www.nicholasmaria.com. There you may read commentary regarding the corruption of hymns, sanctioned by the church in America through its Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy, chaired by none other than the musically brilliant, but decidedly homosexual Bishop Rembert Weakland. Also, under “Gate of Heaven,” you may hear samples of truly Catholic hymnody, and also view hymn texts.

Have you ever wondered why there were never any hymns celebrating the sanctity of life and the holiness of family life? These are as much a horror to gay songsters and clerics as the crucifix to a vampire. Hear “Jesus, the Lord of Life”; read the text at www.nicholasmaria.com under Gate of Heaven. And please spread the word about this truly worthy Catholic hymnody. (www.wholesalecatholic.com and www.catholiconline.com feature three CDs from this collection: Gate of Heaven, Parts I, II and III.)

The Word of God says that a pastor should have a wife and children. I have heard some argue that the below verse was addressing polygamy. That may be so, but that is a terribly incomplete interpretation. As Paul was telling Timothy: Having a well run family with obedient children demonstrates a certain level of competence in caring for the church.

“Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?” (1 Timothy 3:1-5)

I believe that disregarding the Word of God always leads to a bad outcome.

Are you saying that protestant hymns are to blame for this?
