Get a patron saint for 2016

Have to think on that one, maybe someone here can give me some insight. Just lost my home of 12 years, have no place to go yet because of financial difficulties, barely able to walk because I need a double knee replacement (I have good insurance, this just isn’t the time to be in rehab). Well, I am half Czech but I hate to dance even if I could! 😊

Well, one of his patronages is storms, and you are certainly in a stormy part of your life. 😊 He was a martyr during one of the early Roman persecutions, so he was a man of strong and unswerving faith, as well as perseverance. Those traits could also be helpful in your life right now.

Once, when a Saint “chose” me with a tiny little sign (I’m not one to put faith in signs or wonders), I asked for her intercession, and that God would help me understand why she was given to me as a heavenly friend. I recommend trying that as well – God knows why He’s given you St Vitus. 👍

Hi Gertabelle, thank you and God bless you too! Makes sense, I didn’t think of any of that. I also had a thought that maybe it’s my time to “dance.” I became Catholic last year and am very involved in my church, so perhaps God wants to lead me to something better.
 
I am so glad the link has been helpful! And I am really enjoying reading how for a number of you there is a very obvious, strong connection. May our patron saints lead us in the new year and teach us how to walk with Christ.

I would like to share what happened to me the first time I did this, some three years ago. I had terrible anxiety over my children, how to raise them in a godless world, especially because of the sexualisation of children that is getting worse in the west (back home). My patron saint for that year was St Maria Goretti 👍 I still regularly ask for her intercession during bed time prayers with the kids.

I need all the intercession I get about recovery so that worked out.

Saint Barbatus of Benevento-a fiery 7th century preacher who was challenged by a resurgence of paganism and overcame the challenge, melting down an idol and converting the molten metal to a chalice.
I’d not heard of him until now;
I think he will make a good friend.

St Maximilian Kolbe. A Franciscan as am I (tho I am a secular Franciscan) and patron of families (I am a lawyer with family law being a large part of my practice) as well as a patron of drug addicts and prisoners, who I.also deal with in the course.of my work.

St. Sebastian. While he is the patron of many interesting things (against enemies of religion, for example), I honed in immediately on his patronage of athletes. I used to be physically active, but a long-term knee injury put an end to that years ago. I’m finally going to have the surgery needed to (hopefully) end the problem, so you can be sure I’ll be asking St. Sebastian for intercession as I prepare for and recover from the operation. Can’t wait to run again. 🙂

St. Guy of Anderlecht is also the patron of sacristans. Since becoming a sacristan myself a little over three years ago, I have regularly appealed to him for help. 👍
 
When I started this thread yesterday I clicked and prayed for the patron saint for my family and got Our Lady of Guadalupe. I can really feel this will make an impact on us.

Today I went back for a patron saint for myself and got St Edward the Confessor, among other things the patron saint against difficult marriages. I must admit I am a bit worried. Hubs and I are doing well, but I guess there is always room for improvement. Any ideas on how to interpret this? :o
 
St. Philomena!

Tears kept welling up in my eyes after I read her name, and I felt a sweet sense of joy and peace. Thank you, God! Thank you, St. Philomena!

She is the patron of priests and virgins, among other things. (I am joining a Benedictine monastery this year… I’ll see if God is calling me to be a priest.)

I was half way through reading a book about St. Philomena. I will definitely pick it back up!

Perhaps you can ask him to intercede for the marriage of some people you know?

Thank you for the suggestion of choosing a patron saint for the family. That’s beautiful, and I’ll suggest it to my son when he FINALLY wakes up – middle school kids, sheesh :rolleyes:

Perhaps you and your husband can commit yourselves to remembering to say a daily Hail Mary, for example, for all married couples, especially those whose marriages are in trouble. And then asking his intercession to grow in holiness as a couple.

That is a great idea, thanks. Marriage is definitely in trouble these days and we should all pray for this intention. I will definitely do it.

This is such a great idea that I went back to request a saint for my marriage, which is the extent of my family as we have no children. After a few minutes of silent prayer, I clicked the relevant button and got Bl. Alexandrina Maria da Costa.

From the Vatican website:

“…]God helped her to see that suffering was her vocation and that she had a special call to be the Lord’s ‘victim.’”

“Our Lady has given me an even greater grace: first, abandonment; then, complete conformity to God’s will; finally, the thirst for suffering.”

“…]she remembered the words that Jesus himself spoke to her one day: ‘You will very rarely receive consolation… I want that while your heart is filled with suffering, on your lips there is a smile.’”

…perhaps I’m in for a challenging year. :hmmm:
