Get a patron saint for 2016

My son is now befriended by St John of Bridlington – the last English Saint before the reformation.

I got St John of God, so we both have our own St John for the year

We also requested of God a patron saint for our family for 2016 – Blessed Sára Salkaházi. At first, I was like “oh, come on!” Can’t our family even get one Saint we’ve ever heard of?

But then we did a bit of research:

Blessed Sára Salkaházi, S.S.S. (1899 - 1944), born as Schalkház Sára, was a Hungarian religious sister who saved the lives of approximately one hundred Jews during World War II. Denounced and summarily executed by the Pro-Nazi Arrow Cross Party, Salkaházi was beatified in 2006.

On February 18, 1969, Yad Vashem recognized Sára Salkaházi as Righteous Among the Nations.

She is described as “a chain-smoking lady journalist” who was almost turned away from religious life twice! Her story is amazing.

What a great year this is going to be!

I’m so glad people are finding this inspiring.

My non Catholic husband has lately been talking about converting sometime in the future. Two days ago he told me ,in a rather triumphant tone, that he also went to the saint name generator and got himself a patron saint for the year. I was shocked, never expected that. He got Padre Pio, and was pleased with the result, since Graham Greene had a devotion to him. (Hubs loves literature )
The day after he decided to go to mass with us, which very much surprised me. He said that perhaps Padre Pio is already talking to him. Goodness. This will be an interesting year.

I already requested saints for me and others through another site so I went on and prayed for a patron saint of relationships/vocation for 2016.

I got Bl. Alexandrina Maria da Costa.

This is her story:
On Holy Saturday of 1918, Alexandrina Maria da Costa, a fourteen-year-old native of Balasar, Portugal, was sewing when three men broke into her home, threatening to violate her chastity. Resolute to preserve her purity, she fled by jumping out a window. The thirteen-foot plunge to the ground crippled her for life. At the age of twenty-one, she became totally paralyzed and permanently bedridden. Alexandrina accepted this affliction as God’s will for her and an opportunity to offer herself totally as a “victim soul” for the conversion of sinners.



Well then…doesn’t look like it’s going to be such a happy year vocation-wise…please keep me in your prayers…

Happy anniversary, Clare

This is such a great idea that I went back to request a saint for my marriage, which is the extent of my family as we have no children. After a few minutes of silent prayer, I clicked the relevant button and got Bl. Alexandrina Maria da Costa.

From the Vatican website:

“…]God helped her to see that suffering was her vocation and that she had a special call to be the Lord’s ‘victim.’”

“Our Lady has given me an even greater grace: first, abandonment; then, complete conformity to God’s will; finally, the thirst for suffering.”

“…]she remembered the words that Jesus himself spoke to her one day: ‘You will very rarely receive consolation… I want that while your heart is filled with suffering, on your lips there is a smile.’”

…perhaps I’m in for a challenging year.

She choose you too! And you are a married lady…I suppose some of us may be called to reveal some of the effects of sin in the face of changes in our culture…

I’ll admit, in my human weakness, I, ahem, I went back on the site and prayed for a saint of “long term” vocation (or a saint to help me through what’s to come from this other saint in the near future!) and was chosen by St. Geneviere. She’s an awesome young lady who stopped Attila the Hun from invading Paris through fasting and prayer…and her feast day is tomorrow! Still, since she is a consecrated virgin, I wonder, does this mean I am meant to be alone forever? Then a video about St. Valentine randomly started playing on the page…

Bottom line: nothing is clearer than it was before…but these holy men and women are with us, always.

Having a patron saint doesn’t mean your life is going to mirror theirs. Take from Bl Alexandrina the example of her fierce commitment to purity -not that you need to go jumping out of windows - and her absolute surrender to the will of God, as well as her love for the salvation of souls! These are things we can all emulate in our lives.

And on the bright side, if you do jump out of a window, with today’s medical technology, you’d likely be up and about within a year’s time with no sign you’d ever had an accident (except for, perhaps, a few pins in your bones).

Seriously, try not to take your patron saint’s life so personally. This is not a Tarot card reading, trying to divine our futures. We are seeking and being given examples of loving God with heroic virtue. So find the virtue and pray for her assistance in your life of seeking Christ.

Our Lord said to her: “I want you resting in My Arms with the same simplicity of a babe in those of its Mother.” I remember these words by heart because they so beautifully embody the doctrine of spiritual childhood.

Try to remain little; love the Eucharist; live the message of Fatima, and I’m sure you will be filled with joy. That sounds like a good deal to me.

I decided to get a Saint for my ex-husband, someone to whom I can hand over my ex for prayers when I just can’t stand it anymore. :nope:

So I’m handing over my ex-husband to St Albert of Jerusalem. St Albert wrote the first Carmelite Rule. And I’ve always said that if my ex-husband hadn’t left the Church in his late teens, he would have discerned a vocation to be a Carmelite hermit

Of course, if my ex and I had done everything right, my beautiful son would not be here! O felix culpa!!

That sounds like a great idea. I have never heard of St. Albert. I’m sure he is only too eager to help.

About Bl. Alexandrina. Someone very dear to me asked me to choose a patron saint for them for the year. Well, I had, for whatever reason, failed to add Bl. Alexandrina to the selection “hat.” So I quickly got a bit of paper and added her name (I had just been talking about her). And guess who I picked out? St. John of the Cross… Just kidding. Bl. Alexandrina. Had I not read your comment I might not have thought to add her. Strange how God works.

St. Joan of Arc

When I got St. Joan of Arc I had no idea why and couldn’t come up with a connection. The saints who are most prominent in my life are St. Francis of Assisi, St. Therese, St. Pio and St. Charbel.
