For a few months after Rosemary was born the house was in quite a state. I would do nothing else but, say, make the beds, and DH would not stop raving about how wonderful the house looked

. Then things started getting slowly better–I could make the beds and clean the dishes out of the sink–to rave reviews from DH. And now finally it’s basically back in “working order” and I’m back on track. Now I see some laundry that needs folding and a few toys scattered about, and I think the house is in a horrible state, but luckily DH still gives rave reviews. That’s the trick–let your house get bad for a few weeks/months and then the slightest bit of work you do looks like you gave the house a thorough spring cleaning
How about a couple of years of not really doing much except “cooking” (frozen veggies + fish fingers, a can of tuna or fried chicken) and then this? Dh taught me to turn the washing machine on a few days ago - I’d never done laundry in my life before! My excuse is I’m the breadwinner of the family, and dh is the loafer/musician/dropout student. Now he does “military” service (in a hospital) and I’m home all day with the baby, so our roles are reversing, although technically the money still comes mostly from my MA scholarship.
By the way, cleaning the toilet was also my DH’s responsibility when we got married–called it “The Husbandly Duty”

But then I discovered that it’s really not that scary or gross to do, and I’m happy to clean the bathrooms now.
My dh “did” this, but only today I found out what he’d meant by that these two years - ewww!!! He just used to pour a bit of water over the prominent parts of the bathroom, so mine was scary and gross indeed!
