Getting angry at/hating an animal

Jesus told us that to be angry at another human being is a sin. But what about non-human animals?

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t abuse them, and have no intention to start. But what if I just hate them/get angry at them? Is that a sin?

I recommend asking a priest about this in the confessional. They are the best at solutions anyway.

If you know of a good priest in your area, just bring it up and explain the relevant details as quick as you can.

Be aware, there might be more behind this. It is most important to get God’s warriors involved right away - the priest.

i think getting angry at an animal is different from rebuking humans. it is same as getting angry at things, situations, events etc. animals are the part of the creation, not humans. you don’t commit a sin when you cut a tree. do you?

I don’t think perceived hatred of an animal, as hatred for another human being. I say perceived because I don’t think we can hate an animal the same way we would hate a fellow human being. It’s the same as those of us who love animals. I would think God would want us to love His children in a entirely different way.

Since you don’t abuse them, I don’t think it’s a big deal.

I’d like to hear other opinions, however.

To me getting angry at an animal is like getting angry at a child who has diminished capacity. I have gotten angry at animals, namely young dogs who have damaged projects that I have done. I am a woodcarver and have had dogs chew up a project that I have spent many hours on, and have been extremely angry at them and have chastised them. Later I would feel like such a heel for striking them (nothing that would rise to the level of abuse) but some onlooker could have seen it otherwise. The animal didn’t know better but I did. To me that was anger for which I was thoroughly ashamed. Today, that animal is my best friend and I am its protector in all matters.

I think that hating an animal that damaged or hurt my child is much more serious, In a case of that magnitude I would get rid of the animal.

To me its like getting upset with a child, my own children would test my patience so much that I would have to walkd away. They don’t know what they are doing but I as an adult should. Animals live in the present and like children two minutes later have forgotten about the incident unless the anger is considerable and consistent. They learn by how they are treated. We are their care givers and they learn by how they are treated. They are remarkable at intuition and reading us.

At one time I had a friend who was angry and hating of animals and this led to animal abuse and I had to turn him in to the authorities because such people are also capable of doing the same to a child. In both cases that is wrong and to me unethical. I could no longer look upon this individual as a friend.

When I was in the military I took care of some stray dogs, but when I carried a weapon they would not come around me. I was the same person to me, but not to them.

This is my belief.

In the Catholic Marriage Encounter, I was told that anger is neither good or bad. It´s what the anger causes us to do that´s the sin that Jesus is talking about. If we choose to make amends, then God´s Glory reigns. If we hold on to the anger resentfully it´s a sin. Hope I´m right. I treat dogs, not all animals in that regard. Being angry at my Duchess for a good reason is good for her. Exercise, Discipline, and then affection. God bless:thumbsup:

I’f i were to say I really hated a person or an animal I’d have to admit i’d like to kill them given the chance.All creatures God created has some good purpose even if we don’t know what it is.I can say “i can’t stand those cockroaches in my cabinet” but I don’t believe I can really say I hate those cockroaches or flies or that rat that’s always getting in my trash.Creatures can be pests and need to be exterminated but we really can’t hate them.Even if a wolf is attacking and stealing my sheep how can I really hate him when he’s just doing what nature intended him to do?

I dont even hate the enemy in Iraq who is trying to kill us. I hate their Ideology, but not them personally. They are just doing their job. just like us. I could never hate an animal. ok. mosquitos maybe. but thats an insect…

I don’t think anger alone is a sin, unless it does damage to either the angry person or the people he/she is angry with.

I think we can not stay angry. It needs to be a justified feeling, not a personality trait.

Sometimes anger can lead to a good thing. Anger can change injustice or change an opinion that one has. Anger doesn’t necessarily lead to violence, non violence has changed the world in many ways but so has violence. I don’t have the answer if it is always sinful, but I believe that in many ways anger leads to change which can be either sinful or good. I guess that it all comes down to individual intent, what we feel and how the emotion leads one from step to step.

In my life, anger has affected me in many ways, both good and bad. It basically comes down to personal choice and what we feel and how we carry out those feelings. I believe that personal ethics and past learnings lead us in our paths. Anger is not always sinful, it is what we do with the feeling that is either good or sinful. Bad anger is a prejudice, good anger leads to positive change.

This has been shown in many scriptures that I have forgotten about.

This is what I believe. I am but a seeker.

Anger is a sign that tells us that an injustice has occurred. We can react to our feelings of anger in sinful ways, or we can react productively, by removing the source of the injustice.

If an animal violates my personal space (jumps on me, for example), an injustice has taken place.

Yelling and screaming at the animal doesn’t work, though - you have to start to train the animal to respect your space. You have to be firm, but calm - yelling and screaming tells the animal nothing - he can’t understand English, and yelling just scares him. He has no way of knowing why you are yelling. So, instead, you have to work out the best way to teach and reinforce to the animal that he is not to jump on you. It takes time and training.

If it’s not your animal that’s doing it, you just have to tell the owner that you don’t appreciate being jumped on, even if their cute little doggie-woggie wouldn’t hurt a fly - you may also have to explain to them that it’s not the flies you are worried about; it’s your dry cleaning bill.

Dolphins are things, not persons. Babies a persons, not things. The treatment of a thing cannot be prepared that to a person. That being said, why is extermination of cute animals bad, but “ugly” ones good? No animal should be “exterminated with extreme prejudice.” AL have a role in God’s creation, even the annoying or ugly ones.

Animals are animals and people are people.
