Is it a sin or mortal sin if someone gets you upset or mad, and you have some bad thoughts about them out of anger?

peole getting you angry can’t be a sin as Christ got angry and chased the traders out of the temple; but its hard to decide when our anger is righteous or selfish in motivation and whether our response is proportional and correct.

Not really when the brain has stopped influencing you or the spirit of old self, self imposing or usurping yours then just admit there was a slight truth to your state, and pray for them and just forget,a simple sign of the cross could be sufficient also.

Yes. Don’t let your mind travel there.

Discernment is the acceptance and rejection of thoughts, actions, attitudes, etc.

P.S. No one “gets you upset or mad”. You’re mind and your emotions do that - all on their own.

Try not to take other people’s personal sin inventories 🙂 The only person you can change, is you.

Sometimes it is hard to control anger but you need to try…if you have bad thoughts about a person that caused your anger, then it is like holding a grudge…remember, you are supposed to love your neighbor and practice forgiveness 😉 👍

Yes, and I hate holding grudges. I try to never hold grudges towards anyone, and i usually get over something in a day at the most. But, the moment i get upset, i do hold a grudge and i tend to be quiet or not talk to whoever bothered me. And, sometimes i do have bad thoughts about them when i get upset. i was just wondering if that would be a mortal sin. I guess I could confess this either way.

It is not an easy question I think…through your bad feelings you actually do not intend to sin (it comes automatically and you do work it out as soon as possible) however through those bad feelings you hurt God…does it make it a venial sin? 🤷 I would ask my priest

This is a 2 part question. #1. No it is not a sin to get upset or mad. Anger is an emotion taht we all feel at times.

#2. Yes it is a sin to think about something bad happening to a person. If you thought of it you already commited it.

Anger is an natural, emotional response. It’s what you do with that anger that counts, and is factored into whether you are sinning or not. Some questions to ask yourself:

Are you willfully holding onto the anger for a long time?

Are you praying for the person who upset you?

Are you willfully holding a grudge against that person?

Are you willfully refusing to forgive the person who hurt you?

Emotions deceive us. That is why we have to WILL things in order for them to be a sin.

well how can we distinguish between WILLING something rather than emotions or thoughts. ? I would say i don’t ever hold on to anger for a long time or hold a grudge, and i always forgive. i pray sometimes for them, but it’s not like this happens all the time where someone upsets me and i have bad thoughts. i might call them names in my head, etc.

What I try to do when I feel myself giving into anger is I try to see what God loves about this person and focus on that. If that doesn’t work, I try and see Christ in that person, and treat them accordingly. Hope that helps. God Bless you! 🙂

My confessor said it’s ok to get mad (human nature). It’s what you do with your anger that decides whether or not it’s sinful.

I’m beginning to think everything is mortally sinful. Breathing, eating, fishing, playing video games, talking to a member of the opposite sex…

Getting mad can be a sin. If you allow yourself to get screaming, red faced, cursing mad at little things-like someone cutting you off and you plan a vendetta against them.

Anger is healthy-it’s just an emotion. It’s how you use it that can be sinful.
