**The closing thought from the above website: “G. B. Singh rightfully deserves the accolades for bringing out the truth about Gandhi from Gandhi’s own mouth.”

I think a person’s own words are extremely important in assessing their spirituality or lack thereof, simply because they are some indication of the condition of their heart (which only God knows completely). We can’t put anyone in hell, but a person’s own words can tell us volumes about where their soul likely is. He may have liked Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount and even quoted them frequently. He may have even considered becoming a Christian once, but if he never did and if he remained a Hindu to the day he died, how can anyone say he is NOT in hell today? If he in fact never did “accept Christ,” I think the man’s own words, and, more importantly, God’s Word, tells us where he is today.

I don’t know, but I doubt that Ghandi liked to quote these words of Jesus: “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.” If Ghandi was never born again, God’s Word tells us that he could not see, let alone enter, the Kingdom of God. Period.

“I owe all to God in Jesus Christ and say so to all sorts of people, but if someone says he finds the same in Ram or Buddha, what right have I to say he does not? . . . “Where love is, God is;” where the fruits of the spirit are displayed, there the spirit must be—the Eternal Christ, the loving caringness of God expressed in time and in human form, but not to be equated only with the Carpenter of Nazareth.”

—Mary Barr, Quaker from about 1934, co-worker with Gandhi from 1932

Ah, you people, so focused on deciding who qualifies for heaven! Look to yourself, not others, because the more you look away the more your own stake in it slips.

One thing neither Mary nor her someone got was the grace of obedience. This is another case of making up a “Jesus” unknown to Christians. The Jesus known to Christians is the way, the truth, and the life, and is not to be separated fro the “Carpenter of Nazareth.”

Now if someone wants to worhsip or faolow such a “Jesus”, I suppose the question does arise about who I might be to say that they may not. But to claim that this contrived “Jesus” is the same JEsus the Church proclaims, well, them’s fightin’ words.

Mary was as much in error as the benighted individual who confidently proclaimed, on erstwhile Christian principles, that Ghandi was in hell. The nature of the errors is different, that’s all.

Yesterday I was talking to a traditionalist friend of mine about Ghandi. He said Ghandi was in Hell because he did not accept Christ. At first I was shocked, how could a soul as great as Ghandi’s descend into Hell? Does anyone else have any opinions on this? Is Ghandi in hell?
I laugh at that thought! No one goes to hell unless they choose to do so!

A holy priest once said he believed Ghandi would be in Heaven. I’m not so sure about those Christians who caused him to reject Christianity.
You speak my mind.
Yeah, mine, too…
I don’t have any idea where Gandhi is.I have no way of knowing these things…My grandfather the Methodist Class Leader, used to ask people who were so sure of these things, “When did God make you His admissions counsellor”??
But I am really, really worried about the fate of anyone who would turn a man away from a Christian church, based on skin color…I would hope that such blindness would be repented of…

LOL, it seems tht God must have run His ad for “Admissions counselor” in almost every Protestant and Catholic newspaper in the country…some even think they’ve been offered the position and now believe they work as interns…I’m so very thankful, there is only One who makes such determinations. I’m so thankful my fate isn’t in the hands of His “interns”…especially those “interns” on this board:D

well, from what i’ve read, the Church doesn’t declare anybody in hell.

Ah, you people, so focused on deciding who qualifies for heaven! Look to yourself, not others, because the more you look away the more your own stake in it slips.
In a continuation of that thought - concentrate on getting living people to Heaven and let God take care of the dead ones, ;). That’s what I’m doing. But then, I’m the only Catholic I know who has some particularly strange dead Catholics intercede for her, so my advice may be off.

Although no one can say for sure, Ghandi was a pious and virtous man, one of the greatest philanthropes of the 20th century. He’s probably in heaven, but like I said, I don’t know for sure.

But they can “choose” to do so by rejecting Christ, or by sinning mortally and not repenting.

It boils down to whether Gandhi accepted Christ as his Lord. If he did, he’s probably saved, if not, he is probably lost. None of us can know.

God Bless

so, it comes down to, what is your proof that Ghandi was born again? Just because he lived a good life means nothing, I know atheists who live good lives.

your friend is claiming for himself a power that even the Church, who claims infallibiblity does not take, namely, declaring definitively who is and who is not in hell. chutzpah we call it in my neck of the woods. I can think of a stronger word for taking upon oneself a power that belongs only to God.

Its simple: If Ghandi repented of his paganism on his death bed and desired to be in the Church, then he may be in heaven or purgatory. If he was still an unrepentant hindu (I think thats what he was), then he is probably in hell.

Even though he may have done good deeds, it is not works only that save us, but works AND faith. You must believe in Christ to enter heaven.

That is too categorical. The Catechism (see item 1260) makes it very clear that those ignorant of the Gospel of Christ, and of his Church, can indeed have salvation.

See also the sections on moral conscience, where invincible ignorance is discussed.

Gerry

it says ignorant of christ and the church not those who willfuly reject christ and his church. what about no salvation outside of the church. surely thi smust mean something.
i hope this has found you well

It would be pretty hard for Ghandi to have invincible ignorance, don’t you think?

Are all of you saying that because Gandhi was exposed to Christianity as a young man in England, that he is now in Hell because he remained Hindu?

yeah. that my drift. either its no salvation outside the church or you can be saved with out the church. now i think the second one sounds a bit to like a heresy. how can one
be saved if one rejects christ? hindus are pagans so i dont think they qualify as christian though correct me if i am wrong–oh if pagan is not a good term then i am sure plytheistic will do. so i htink it goes like this.
gandhi banning of course his last mortal seconds on earth if he repented and accepted christ then-------im sure a along long long time in purgetory.
if in those final miliseconds he didnt then as z germans say kaput!
hope this found you well
