I am sure you have seen the large number of shows on TV that’s purpose is to locate and prove the existence of ghosts. Is watching these shows against the Catholic faith?

I cannot think of what sin it would be to watch such a show unless you think by watching it you are supporting someone tinkering with the occult. It can educate you as to what approach someone secular takes.

There are some Catholic books and talks you can read about from priests on ghosts and such. They certainly discourage a lay person from tinkering in those realms actively, but I am not aware of them discouraging watching a TV show about it.

It might be a sin to watch the commercials during the break. They are getting worse every season.

You could be using your talents in a more fruitful manner. Consider it an opportunity to improve yourself by just turning the TV off.

You have to be wary of watching these shows. These people are playing around with demonic stuff for a show. It can propagate an inordinate fear of demons.

It’s not really a sin but why watch it? It does no good to our soul and really not a good way to spend your time. I would perfer to read scripture with my free time.😃

Because it’s entertaining and fun & it makes people think about an afterlife.so no it’s not a sin.

for mere intertainment, no biggie, but these shows are nonetheless garbage. I find it laughable when the head ghost hunter tries to cast out ghost/demons, like yeah really, with what authority I say? I find it occult when in one episode the ghost hunter supposedly expels ghosts with use of a pshycic, witch doctor, alternate religion, Wicca, and forsake Christianity. The message being sent to the average person is that any religion is as good as the other… And sometimes they show this wish-washy and faithless priest who appears to be Catholic, that is of absolute no-effect in expelling anything, then the head-ghost hunter says at the conclusion of the show, we have to try different things…

Okay to watch just for fun. Be aware that one person (who is an expert debunker) has offered a million dollars to anyone who can prove the existence of ghosts. The offer is over ten years old and no one has claimed the prize.

Don’t these shows make the ghost appear to be departed “Spirits of the Dead”?
I don’t think spirits of the dead haunt places or people but demons do.I don’t think spirits of the dead can do this because they go on,you know to eternity.
If you watch these shows it could open a door, not saying it will but it could open one’s mind up to come under attack. That’s what I think anyways so I don’t watch them.Lord knows I’d fall over dead if i ever seen one,a ghost:D

No, it’s not a sin to watch it but it could be very harmful to believe it.

Those are dead people wandering there as ghosts, but demons. If the demons can transform into angels of light, can’t they in ghosts as well?

Sure, watch it but be careful of what you believe in.

I think these shows are entertaining, kind of like ghost stories around a campfire. But if you watch them in belief, that’s a different story.

Do you really believe that God ‘loses’ souls? Scripture tells us what happens to us when we die to this world. It’s not like a soul gets away every now and then to run amuck 🙂

In all seriousness, if these folks are being communicated with, it’s probably demons and they are treading on dangerous ground. If…it’s even true.

**Edit:

I just realized that exactly what I said has been said more than once. 😊 Sorry. Gosh, I thought I was on the brink of some earth-shattering revelation… 😃

Has anyone seen the one that has a “priest” on every now and then? And one of the phsycics they have on there is on another show as a vampiress! Yeah, a priest and a vampiress working hand in hand to fight ghosts and demons! Yay!

We know that’s legit.

If all they did was set up their cameras and recording equipment, I would say it was ok to watch. However, most of them try to communicate with the spirits in some way, either via a psychic, a ouija board, or just calling them out and challenging them to appear. This, imo, falls into the category of attempting to call up the spirits of the dead and is expressly forbidden for Catholics.

In our faith, none of the manifestations of ghosts or spirits called up in this way are the spirits of loved ones or of people who actually lived. They are all demons.

I believe that just having it on in your living room or wherever challenges any spirits lurking in or near your own home to manifest, especially if they are using a ouija board. This is something you really don’t want, so I would say that it is also dangerous to watch them.

I used to watch them for entertainment value, but after much thought and prayer, I don’t anymore.

I think these shows are good as long as they are doing it for scientific reasons—and good too because it proves the existence of the soul and the After Life.

I have also heard this may be a form of Purgatory, that a soul is sentenced maybe to try to learn a lesson that he/she didn’t learn during the existence in this life.

I think if you egg them on like daring them to scratch you (aka Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures) then that is intentionally putting your soul in danger and risking demonic possession.

We watch this stuff pretty regularly and there are really only 2 that are worth it. The rest are just sensationalistic hogwash IMO.

The TAPS show, Ghost Hunters and their spin off, Ghost Hunters International. These groups use scientific and objective means to either debunk or verify paranormal activity.

My wife and I sometimes discuss what we have seen and we often come back to the line from the Nicene Creed which says that we believe in God…the maker of all things seen and unseen.

I am a serious skeptic, but have some very close family members who have had such experiences that were it coming from anyone else, I’d blow 'em off, but their accounts are straightforward and without hysterics or self aggrandizement so…

These two shows are interesting and inoffensive so far as I can tell.

The rest are (IMO) a waste of time. (BTW…I agree about the commercials!)

QUOTE]

I watched one once where they set up cameras and all that and one of the “hunters” tried calling one of the ghosts out. As soon as he did there was a loud bang and I think he messed himself, I couldn’t stop laughing. I don’t think those shows are bad to watch, but like everyone else says, it’s all in how you look at it.

Probably not.
Jersey Shore on the other hand…
I happened to watch this show once to see what all the hype was about, and if it is possible to lose intelligence after watching a TV show, this one definitely would accomplish that. It’s a shame MTV has nothing to do with M anymore.
