It’s been my personal experience to be careful what I ask for…

“I watched one once where they set up cameras and all that and one of the “hunters” tried calling one of the ghosts out. As soon as he did there was a loud bang and I think he messed himself, I couldn’t stop laughing. I don’t think those shows are bad to watch, but like everyone else says, it’s all in how you look at it.”
I admit to watching “Ghost Adventures” because these younger men tend to get all macho and calling the ghost out. They say “Use my energy!” CRAZY!

I cannot help but laugh too when they do scream and get fearful, because as another commenter said “Be careful what you ask for.”

I just think they’re dumb—and that’s the most charitable thing I can say about them, but again, I do believe it proves the existence of the After Life

Some people (unlike Jason and Grant and Company at TAPS) like to show out in front of the cameras, but I seriously think they are taking chances they may someday regret. Notice here in Acts 19:13-20.

We watch this stuff pretty regularly and there are really only 2 that are worth it. The rest are just sensationalistic hogwash IMO.

The TAPS show, Ghost Hunters and their spin off, Ghost Hunters International. These groups use scientific and objective means to either debunk or verify paranormal activity.

My wife and I sometimes discuss what we have seen and we often come back to the line from the Nicene Creed which says that we believe in God…the maker of all things seen and unseen.

I am a serious skeptic, but have some very close family members who have had such experiences that were it coming from anyone else, I’d blow 'em off, but their accounts are straightforward and without hysterics or self aggrandizement so…

These two shows are interesting and inoffensive so far as I can tell.

The rest are (IMO) a waste of time. (BTW…I agree about the commercials!)
I agree with Church Militant. I also recommend “Destination Truth” for the entertaiment value. I find it interesting that in these shows, they present the two types of ghosts St Maximilian Kolbe tried to explain in some of his writings. He believed (and I agree with him) that the two known gosthly manifestations could be explained in the following way.
  1. Ghosts which are attached to a place and that manifest on the same way all the time, like a tape that rewinds and repeats again and again, with no personal or external interaction. These are poor souls in npurgatory that are strugling with their attachments to sinfull behaviours.
  2. Ghosts that interact with you. These are demons seeking to confuse and make souls become obsessed with “super-natural” manifestations.

I agree with you, Catholic Deacon, that is what I have heard (about ghosts that have attachments and seem to be a film that keeps playing over and over again…a form of Purgatory?)

I’ve always wondered why the ghosts are never asked about Christ or what happened to them after their deaths? Maybe the ghost hunters are forbidden from doing it, but it would be interesting to see how they’d react to the Lord’s name.

The folks from Ghost Hunters always try to take a pseudo-scientific attitude for their show. I’m sure that if they were to bring a priest or deacon to accompany them and bless the haunted site before filming starts the show would become very boring.
One think I find interesting is that the one time they encountered strong demonic activity in a site they asked a friend to come and bless the place, with blessed wather. Which is a very Catholic think to do. Like I always say, when the devil is knoking even atheists know how to do the sign of the cross

I am sure you have seen the large number of shows on TV that’s purpose is to locate and prove the existence of ghosts. Is watching these shows against the Catholic faith?
Many such shows promote occult practices that certainly are against the Catholic faith. We can do nothing for the dead but pray for their souls & do other forms of penance on their behalf. If they’re apparitions of angels or saints, we need only to ask for their prayers- they need nothing from us. If they’re apparitions of demons or of the damned, nothing we can do will help them escape- and they have no desire to help us. Shows like that seem a waste of time at best, and possibly can create temptation to explore the occult.

I think if I ever encounter any (and I believe in them) I would tell them that I would pray for them.

I’ve always liked the Discovery Channel show “A Haunting”. They interview some of the actual people involved and it’s a reenactment type show which is more interesting to me than the ones where they run around haunted locations with scientific equipment.

In fact, one of the shows, “A Haunting in Connecticut” involved a Priest coming in and saying Mass in a house which turned out to be effective. “The Possessed” also brought in a Priest for the exorcism and it worked.

Also, here’s a good answer about ghosts from one of the Catholic Answers Apologists:

I watch that show, it is very entertaining but I try not to get drawn into… The Tv is the Satanic tube. Look at EWTN more often, I do.

I have seen on more than one occasion that Ghost Hunters will recommend to a family that they ask a priest to come bless their home… I wonder if any of the families have come to Christ through that?

We believe in spirits. People can call them ghosts I call them spirits…its just a person who doesnt have a body anymore. I dont think its against our faith to watch Ghost Hunters, Ghost Lab, BUT…I do not watch shows that call up the dead that conjure up spirits. THAT i believe is against our faith. All around you, your loved ones that have passed are still there. They sometimes let you know they are there. During hard times they can be there all the time. My grandfather passed way, I knew right away he was ok. My family was mourning and crying because he did pass all of a sudden from a massive heart attack. I did cry Im not going to say I didnt, but I didnt cry because he “passed” I cried because I knew I wasnt going to physically hug him, touch him, kiss him see him. This was in 2006 that he passed and still to this day whenever there is something good or even something bad, I feel him around and I smell him…he had a certain smell, one of flour tortillas…LOL and now I smell that…and we dont cook flour tortillas (bad for you!)

So…no, I dont think its bad to watch them.

my question is this: If the ghost’s are from God, why do they hide?

Maybe we should pray for them and the souls they claim to try and find.
That might be the best for both.

Curious: How many of us (both Catholic or n-C) have actually had some kind of Ghost/paranormal experience?

I have, but I am certain that it was an angelic healing touch.

They dont hide. Their energy is different from ours. In order to make themselves known they need to draw energy and Im sure that takes a lot. They have to draw energy from their surrounding sources, like computers, tv.s batteries. They are not like us…they have no physical body so how can they communicate to the physical world? Its just another way of living, we dont understand…because most people are scared to…and no not all of it is evil…not all of them are demons. However so many people just chalk it up to something else, people dont see the opportunity to still “feel” their loved ones around.

I have felt and seen things since I was a small girl. My first experience was when I was about 8. My parents left me with my grandparents, they went to a party. I was asleep, this is according to my grandparents and parents…and i woke up crying and yelling to take someone out of the street he was going to get runned over. I must have looked like a night terror and they just chalked it up to a bad dream. A few days later across the way from us, we lived in front of a creek, a kid was playing and a big van turned the corner fast and hit him. He died, the boy. So many things have happend to me this would turn into a long post. My husband says I have a “gift” but I can honestly tell you I DONT WANT IT! I predicted the death of my best friend…but I didnt know it was her, I thought it was me. I told my husband, then boyfriend, that I was going to die and I wasn’t going to see the age 24. I told him I didnt know how or why but something that had to do with my head…I said it almost felt like a gun shot. 2 months after turning 23 my best friends brain swelled up and she passed away. I dont know if thats what she felt, but they never were able to tell why her brain swelled.

After she passed my husband was sent to Korea and I fell into a great depression. She helped me out…I dreamt about her, like as if she was still here. We would drink coffee, eat at our fav restaurant in my dream…but SHE helped me get out of my drepression.

I predicted my grandfathers passing. didnt know it was him, I thought it was my father or my fil. I told my husband one day, while driving, cause it just hits me really bad and hard and I feel sick…that someone was going to die of a massive heart attack. He said…who, I said IDK…someone who is older than us. He said your grandpa…I said…No hes never had heart problems. A few months later my grandfather died of a massive heart attack. He visted me later telling me he didnt want to come back. He said he was happy where he was. I said “Grandpa no one is telling you to come back, if your happy here then stay here dont worry about us.” The next day I visisted my mom after mass and she had just hung up with my aunt, her sister, and apparently my aunt was so distraught over my grandfathers passing that she was praying rosaries, begging GOD for one more day with her dad. I GOT UPSET AND LIVID!!! I told her my dream and she cried and I told her he was fine and happy and not to cry for him anymore. Later I scolded my aunt. They dont get the dreams…I DO! Its not good to be the middle person.

The most recent thing thats happened to me, but I will end it here. This does exist…most of it I believe is our Angles helping us out, but we are so cynical that we either chalk it up to something else or we just blame it on demons. Trust me if it were a demon, you would feel ugly, sick to your stomach…like when you feel when you know a person is not a good person.

I read somewhere in the Bible that we should protect ourselves from any form of evil. I sometimes watch ‘Haunting’ and, sorry for the expression, that scares the **** out of me. If you have experiences with spirits, that may tempt you to communicate with them. Of course, there is no commandment that prohibits watching those kinds of shows, but they can be tools of the devil. It is better not to, but there is no commandment to prohibit it. So if your question if whether there is some kind of danger in watching shows like these, then yes, there is. If you wonder whether it is a sin or not, then no, it is not a sin.

Having grown up with brothers who loved spooky shows, I find these “ghost shows” somewhat entertaining, but they need to be looked at as entertainment, not fact. Some of these shows seem to be flirting with the occult, so I avoid them . God bless all!😃

I also enjoy Ghost Hunters (Jason and Grant) -and sometimes watch Ghost Hunters International.
Its entertaining and fun and pretty harmless iin my opinion. Beliving in ghosts is not contrary to the Catholic Church from all I’ve heard and read. Like everything else-it depends on why you do it and what you intend to do with it.
I believe in ghosts, but I don’t believe in every ghost story I see or hear.
I had my own experience, unlooked for. It was not terrifying or scary to me. It was never repeated and I have never and would never seek another. I believe it was a gift from God sent to comfort me in extreme distress and pain–and that was accomplished.
The two programs I watch are entertaining–nothing more or less. And even then I sometimes find them tiresome.
You can make almost anything sinful or dangerous if that is what you intend to do.
