Thank you so much, Clairabelle, for posting this link! I think it is very, very informative and helpful for anyone with questions about ghosts or ghost-hunting. I have read several of the pages posted there and, so far, have gained some real insights as everything there is from the perspective of the Catholic Church.

I have already learned that it is a very bad idea to try to speak with any spirit, no matter how “good” it may appear to be. This site has also thrown some explanatory light on the activities of those “ghost-busters” who have become so popular in the media. It is now clear to me that they have no idea of the danger they are incurring, not only for themselves, but also in leaving those who are truly spiritually oppressed with a false sense of validation or help. Clearly, only those authorized by the Church to intercede in these matters should be responding to those in need of such help, not laymen who are merely curious or hoping to draw attention to themselves by provoking entitites they cannot begin to understand.

God help those who naively undertake to provoke powers they do not understand and, worse, lead others to think that they can communicate with demons who pose as ghosts without grave spiritual harm.

That is not a problem KC, I believe the strongest and oldest emotion of mankind is fear and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown … happy to share.

EXACTLY. This stuff is very real and it’s not something to toy with. Alot of the people who are indulging in this stuff don’t really know what they are dealing with. Again, one who’s seeking evil will be found easily by evil and get more than they bargained for. Glorifying and being curious about the Lord is what’s really good! God bless you and everyone on here & everywhere!!!👍

"Some may say to you,"Let’s ask the mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead.With their whisperings and mutterings,they will tell us what to do.“But shouldn’t people ask God for guidance?Should the living seek guidance from the dead?” {Isaiah 8:19}

“So you are complete through your union with Christ,who is the head over every ruler and authority.” {Colossians 2:10}

I have been ghost hunting before. It is a great deal of fun! I live near one of the most haunted cities in the US. It is a blast!

Now, you have to be careful with who and what you are dealing with! Gabriele Amorth, a chief exorcist at the Vatican, says not to do it. Not for moral reasons, but for safeties sake!!! We do not know what ghosts are, so we must be cautious.

My priest says there is nothing wrong with looking for a spook as long as it is like a game. The moral concern comes in when you are trying to contact spirits and you take things to far.

I have seen some scary things! Here are some things I do to protect myself and keep myself out of supersticious nonsense.

I always go alone or with a group of like minded people. Fellow Catholics or Christians who are not concerned with contacting ghosts, only geting a thrill.

I always wear a cross/scapular/medal around my neck.

I always pray to God, Mary, and St. Michael for protection.

I only bring a camera with me, sometimes a voice recorder. I dont bring “serious” equiptment because I feel that that is where you start to cross the line into supernatural trouble.

Good Luck!!!

In my opinion this priest gave you bad advice!

Stay well away from ghost hunting. It is not entertainment. You chase ghosts at you own eternal peril! And, there are better thrills. How about the thrill of getting closer to Jesus. Imagine if you used the time you spent chasing ghosts to pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Imagine if you used this time in quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.

Anyone who fears should not even think about such things- and obviously many here fear…it is precisely that fear that makes you a target for lower entities-it’s like opening an all you can eat smorgasboard-they feed on fear and negativity and whisper in your ear causing doubt and confusion -making you even more fearful …eliminate the fear-Trust God in all things-evil has no power in your life unless you invite it… Focus on God and His Love-doesn’t mean your world can’t be rocked or fall down around you-but whatever happens your faith and focus on the Love of God will bring you through…you find what you seek-and looking for evil in everything means they are lurking around you- your negativity and fear is like a beacon to them…I have a problem with the term "hunting:- it sounds predatorial-most ghost hunters are still in the frame of mind that they aren’t sure of life after death and are simply looking for validation -or looking to de-bunk…the problem comes when they do not take steps to protect themselves with prayer-You are watched over by loved ones in spirit, angels and those you call on for intercession- prayer instantly seals you against anything negative breaking through-all prayer is heard…:heaven::crossrc:

With all due respect, please read the post by Clarabella where she cites the following link:
religiousdemonology.com/Introduction.htm. I appreciate your faith and prayers for protection, but I ask you to prayerfully consider the following:
  1. By visiting haunted places, even armed with sacramentals and by praying for protection, you may still be making an invitation to these spirits. After all, you are going there to seek an encounter. That seeking is an invitation.
  2. When Satan tempted Jesus by quoting the scriptures and tempting Jesus to throw Himself off the wall of the temple because scripture has it that the angels will protect him lest he dash His foot against a single stone. Jesus said that it is also written that you shall not put the Lord your God to the test.
Now I’m not saying that you are intentionally trying to put the Lord to the test. I believe that you sincerely believe that you are demonstrating your faith in relying on God to protect you; however, you are willfully putting yourself in harms way. You are looking for an encounter while relying on the grace of God to protect you.
  1. The church specifically states that we are not to communicate with spirits, seek medians, etc. Whether or not you verbally or in your heart speak to these “ghosts” is not the issue; by going to a haunted house, you are opening yourself up to an encounter with beings you do not know. This is allowing the camel to poke its nose inside your tent.
I will pray for you and all others who seek these encounters that you are protected from evil. I will pray that you turn your gaze only on the Lord God. I ask you to pray for the Holy Spirit to enlighten your mind as to His will in these matters.

God Bless You.

…and with all due respect- I appreciate your concern- but what I say is true-…those of you who fear such things and see evil in everything instead of seeking God in all things are in much more danger than those who don’t-and you don’t even have to go looking-they will find you… I will pray for you to lose this open invitation you wear like a neon sign…

It’s good to know we will be praying for each other while we agree to disagree.

Ahem…I would just like to point out that these apparitions (unless they are of souls in purgatory requiring prayer) usually ARE EVIL, so whether or not we comprehend this fact does not matter. They are DANGEROUS to the souls of the curious.

WHY do you assume that those who recognize the fact that demons do exist, that they are fallen angels and, therefore, intellectually superior to man and, therefore, to be avoided, “see evil in everythinginstead of seeking God”?

To recognize that we mortals, while protected by God’s mercy to some extent, are still inferior to the powers of any angel - fallen or not - in no way indicates that we are not also seeking God.

Please do read the content of the linked website (religiousdemonology) more carefully. The man who posts it is experienced in these matters and he makes it quite clear that this is nothing for an amateur to mess with. Sometimes fear is a very healthy attitude - when it can prevent untold miseries such as may be inflicted by the demonic upon those foolish enough to consider them “entertainment”.

An ADDENDUM…

I just received this commentary in conjunction with today’s readings for the Mass. I think it serves as a timely warning to some here who see ghost-hunting as an exciting adventure:

For there are many people, as has already been said before, who are corrupt in mind and reprobate in faith but who cast out demons and work mighty deeds in the name of the Lord. It is true that when the apostles were talking about these and saying: «Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us,» Christ replied to them at the time: «Do not forbid him, for the one who is not against you is for you.» Nonetheless, to those who say: «Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty deeds in your name?» it is testified that he will reply: «I never knew you. Depart from me, you workers of wickedness» (Mt 7,22).

This is not to say that everyone who pursues ghost-hunting or all those who “cast out demons” (by prayers for deliverance for locations) are to be condemned by God. Some are called to this work. However, this quotation does serve to remind us of the danger inherent in the work…the danger of pride which can so easily spring from curiosity and meddling with the unknown. Even those who seem to be conquering evil may yet be castigated by the Lord as “workers of wickedness”.

So…is it really worth chancing the displeasure of God so that our curiosity might be satisfied?

I think it is you who needs to reread that page-first of all demons and ghosts are very different entities…a ghost is simply a disembodied person who has not crossed over yet and spiritual discernment is key to knowing what exactly you are dealing with… and I do know what I am talking about…nothing attracts lower entities-like fear and negativity…so don’t even speak of them-they have no power in your life unless you invite them in- I don’t doubt that some of you are seeing demons around every corner- your fear is like a beacon to them and they are following you… focus on the love of God instead- and His Son- they won’t stay around very long if you do-doesn’t mean they won’t snipe at you to see if they can make you afraid-but if your focus is God- it’s only like swatting flies in comparison…IJohn 4:16-18

…and as far as Ghost hunters- most of them are still in the “not sure if life goes on” …mode
what’s really sad is that …what most people react to is the “Hollywood spooky” pushing the fear buttons…it makes people vulnerable to such influences…
and while it does happen- exorcisms are not given at the drop of a hat- the Church knows many criteria have to be met for something to be called demonic-…

I disagree with nothing you have just said.

I doubt very much that ghost-hunting would convince them. They would always find some explanation for the phenomena (even if it is authentically spiritual in nature).

what’s really sad is that …what most people react to is the “Hollywood spooky” pushing the fear buttons…it makes people vulnerable to such influences…
and while it does happen- exorcisms are not given at the drop of a hat- the Church knows many criteria have to be met for something to be called demonic-…

Well, there’s really nothing wrong with enjoying a thrill of excitement - watching a spooky movie, for example - but messing around with real supernatural entities is not wise. But you are correct to say that they feed off of our fear and weaknesses.

Actually, my last post was not only directed to you but to others, most notably post #144 which was focused only on the thrill-seeking of this activity, thus:

“I have been ghost hunting before. It is a great deal of fun! I live near one of the most haunted cities in the US. It is a blast!”

Although most such phenomena do have a natural explanation (which, as you point out, the Church seeks to reveal when investigations are made), there remain some which do not. These are cases which should be left to investigators trained by the Church for this purpose rather than to curious laymen.

For those who wish proof that “life goes on”, there are certainly other means to assure us of this: the bible, for one, and all that Christ revealed. But even for non-Christians, there is evidence. There are books about those who have died for a brief time, only to be revived. They then relate stories of what they experienced while clinically dead. A great many of these stories corroborate each other through common factors. (I believe that one is called “The Vestibule”.) But that is another discussion…

it’ll be immoral if you play with it like spirit of the glass of etc. for you are committing a sin.
but if you’re afraid, think that God is the most powerful and more powerful to the ghost you are afraid of.

God Bless!

Instead of doing those things, just pray for them, they need to be respected.

Saint Padre Pio saw thousands of souls during his lifetime. He said that a way to see if they were good or not is to see how they would to respond to the name of the Lord. That’s he would know. You have a very unique yet not at all that uncommon gift from God. I would suggest reading some books on Saint Padre Pio, and other saints who had this ability and see how they would handle it. It all comes from God. Others who have responded the way they do, I would not let that completely bother you. While it’s not very uncommon for us catholics it still is not something that is accepted right on the spot. So I would be prayerful about those who feel that way. You are a great tool for God. I mean I feel he used you that night to help save the pregnant teens life and the precious baby. And who knows perhaps that young teen has a great devotion to our Lord!

God Bless
Thanks Emma.

I have been thinking about your response since the day I first read it. It helped to hear another viewpoint. I was once literally tricked into a room down a long hallway as a young teen and cornered for what I had confided in someone my own age at a church. They thought I was possessed, demons were showing me things, and this was their version of a sneak exorcism!. IT WAS HORRIBLE. I was upset, angry, and never went back! But they soon found what I said was correct, and in the end that may have bothered them even more than the perpetrator.

But it is a burden when people are afraid, or look at me like I’m Linda Blair!

I have heard of Padre Pio. I asked a few Catholic friends about him, evidently not everyone knows who he is, so it is off to the half price book store! I looked into a few more things on purgatory as well since I was last here.

I have not logged in since that post. I am surprised at all the new threads on psychic, occult and/or paranormal subjects posted. I did notice and not sure if it means anything, But there seems to be more activity around now.

Reading through the new threads I still see the danger. Usually I will tell no one about the things I see. I have noticed around my area that people become so desperate they look to a sensitive, seer, psychic, what ever term they want to use, for answers instead of God,

I had an older women want me to work at a charity banquet as a psychic, I turned it down. I know it was for a good cause, as was pointed out, but felt it was not right. FYI, She was rather sensitive so she knew I could “see”. I am not Catholic as I said, but I do not want God angry since I’ve seen others do it, and it seemed to point people away from God.

Like I said weeks ago, I only say something if I feel I am supposed to, and am very careful about how it is said.

Someone commented on this thread, that they had paranormal experiences and had no where to turn since the church (could be paraphrasing) was silent on it or did not want to discuss it?. I see that as a problem too, because there will always be others out there with open arms, ready to listen and help. But the source may not be pure.

Also agree, fear feeds the dark fallen ones. And I have seen so many of them wear a mask, pretending to be a loved one and others are eager to accept it. Then you run into a whole other set of problems.

And I like those links about what to do and not do. I think provoking one is idiotic as well. They seem to do that a lot on the tv shows.

Had another experience last night, seeing someone in that in between place, but not evil. I felt such waves of sadness, And later a confirmation from out of the blue. It got me thinking about this thread again…

So I actually hope there is a purgatory, it would be nice to know we are not helpless and can at least pray for them. I have asked God before, “what is the use of seeing if there is nothing I can do? Why see them?” Those lost types are numerous.

I do not think most would even believe their eyes if they saw what was in that hospital. It was very hard to rest! But if all of this (purgatory, etc…) is true, then it makes more sense.

Anyway, thanks again!

Why do so many of you claim to know what these entities are? Why do you say such things as, “believe me I know”? While I agree that demons will attack those who are fearful for lack of faith, what makes you think that they will not disturb those who actively seek to encounter them? Most importantly, you do not “know” that the entities you encounter are merely poor souls in Purgatory. Where is Purgatory after all? Why do so many of you assume that the poor souls in Purgatory are left to hang around this old house? The teaching of the Catholic Church is that when a person dies they will face particular judgment. They will go to one of three places, heaven, hell, or purgatory. How do you know that the entities you encounter are suffering souls in purgatory who have been unable to pass on? Answer: you don’t know, you simply believe it to be so. And the great deception may well be that a demon is appearing as a benign or suffering spirit to trick you into engaging in this activity.

If you think about it, we cannot know the substance of anything. In the natural world, we apprehend a thing through our senses. For instance, when we see, smell, taste, and feel a piece of bread, we conclude that it is, in substance, bread. Yet, we cannot directly know its substance; we just conclude it to be bread based on its accidents or appearances. When dealing with the natural world, this apprehension of appearances serves us well. This is why the substance of the Eucharist can be changed while its appearance or accidents remain as bread. The point is that our minds apprehend appearances only. HOWEVER, WHEN DEALING WITH THE SUPERNATURAL WORLD, OUR SENSES CANNOT TELL US THE SUBSTANCE OF WHAT WE ARE DEALING WITH AND NEITHER CAN THE FEELINGS, THOUGHTS, OR IMPRESSIONS THAT ARE PRESSED UPON OUR MINDS. WE CAN EASILY BE DECEIVED BY SUPERNATURAL BEINGS.

Do you know what it means to open yourself up to demonic influences? When you go seeking a thrill by encountering a ghost, you have actively and by your free will opened yourself up to that entity. It does not matter whether you actively talk to the entity, although active conversation is certainly more dangerous. The fact is that you have sought interaction. If not, then you must think that these ghosts are taken by surprise and accidentally seen. (Sort of like a Romulan forgetting to engage his ship’s cloaking device.) This is absurd. You sought the encounter; you made yourself open to the encounter. Now you are allowing that entity to make an impression on your mind or show itself to your senses. THIS IS AN INVITATION! Now, God and your guardian angel may protect you from annihilation, possession, or oppression, but the fact remains that you have opened yourself up to receive an encounter. This violates the teachings of the Catholic Church and is, in my opinion, A SIN.

Here’s the $100,000 question. If a demon passed itself off as a suffering soul in purgatory how would you know? Please don’t tell me that you just would. Remember that Satan and demons are liars and murderers from the beginning. Most of Satan’s deceptions are full of half truths. When dealing with the fallen angels, you are dealing with powers and principalities whose intellect is far above yours. Imagine the kinds of thoughts, emotions, and feelings they can implant upon your mind. So, how COULD you know? AND, WHY WOULD YOU PLAY ROULET WITH YOUR SOUL?

We should pray for the poor souls in Purgatory. We don’t need to see them roaming around the attic to pray for them. God will direct our prayers especially if we pray for those who have no one to pray for them. If you ghost hunters used your time in prayer, you would deliver many souls and grow spiritually.

Bottom Line: If you are curious and seeking a thrill, ride a roller coaster. STAY AWAY FROM THE OCCULT! Do not believe those who say that they have experience in these matters. They do not know and cannot know what they are talking about! Pray, pray, pray for the poor souls in Purgatory. You do not need to see them to pray for them. You do not need to know what their particular suffering is to pray for them. God will look at the sincerity of your prayers and apply them in the most efficacious manner.

What about the spirit of the Blessed Virgin when she appeared and brought messages – many of which are approved by the Church as being worthy of belief. The people that saw her “communicated” with her.

What about Saint Faustina – she had souls from purgatory appearing to her (i.e., ghosts) asking her to pray for them and to undergo suffering for them so that they might be released from purgatory and get to heaven.

…and let’s not forget the Holy Spirit…check the Creed-the Church is all about belief in things “seen and unseen”…the difference is if it is through God’s Love-or if it is through fear…mreckers is a good example of what a prime target for negative and lower energies looks like and sounds like- that fear feeds them and they feed that fear
