Ghosts and Spirits of the night

My Son said that he sees ghosts in his bedroom. I do believe in the unseen, and have heard that most children can see them, but take no notice, because to them, this is normal.

We discussed it. I told him that I think they are not here to hurt him and maybe just to tell them, they are not welcome here in his room and to please go away. I had some Holy Water and although I have sprinkled my house just recently (due to me being involved in Occult activities in the past - I wanted to rid it of any evil ) so I did a quick sprinkle in his room last night and asked Saint Michael to protect this house and my son’s room. This reassured him, and he thought it was a bit of fun (he is only 5) so he went off to sleep.

I am concerned though. There was a time when I would have loved to hear that my son could see ghosts/spirits, now that I have accepted God back into my life and do not do Occult/Spiritualism things anymore, I am actually quite scared.

Any ideas, anything else I can do/try?

I would guess buying incense sticks of “Dragon’s Blood” and “White Sage” - especially “Dragon’s Blood” as it will get rid of any negative energies and spirits within the room you burn it. I suggest however, if you son still sees them, then the spirits are nothing to be afraid of…it is the negative spirits you need to be thoughtful off. But still start burning a stick of “Dragon’s Blood” just before you son goes to bed…to keep any negatives away.

Any keep up you prayers to Michael, and maybe see if you son could seek protection from his Guardian Angel

How about the OP look for a childcare book for advice on how to re-assure a small child who is afraid of the dark, and talk to her Priest about her own past experiences with the occult?

It is from personal experience, I have dealt a lot of spirits - and still do. “Dragon’s Blood” is just what the incense is called…I burn it frequently. I know it gets rid of negative energies and spirits. I use it along side with prayers to St. Michael the Archangel for protection…

The OP asked for any advice, and that is what i am giving her. And it is up to her, if she carries it out.

That is until he started saying things like his friend told him that he never saw the car that had hit him and other things like that. Well, that got me to thinking, so I asked him what his friend looked like and my son said you couldn’t really see him very well because he was dead. This came from a 3 year old. It was scary. A lot of things started to happen around the house at that point, and we had the opportunity to move, so we did.

My sense is that if these things your child is seeing aren’t interacting with him, he should be fine. It was the interaction that bothered me, and later some objects being thrown about without any explanation we could find. I’m not saying there was no explanation, but we honestly couldn’t find one. Because of the nature of my faith, I know some folks who would recommend things like smudge and the like, but I really don’t know about those things so much. My advice is to ignore them. I think these beings are attracted to the strong life force of children and adolescents, and I also think they love attention. One leader in my faith once said that they are no more “in the know” than we are, and there is nothing to gain from bothering with them.

Thanks. It was nice to hear that others do have similar experiences, although your’s sounded a little more extreme than mine. They do not seem to be interacting with my son, so that is a good thing. Ignoring them could be the best option.

You were quite correct to get rid of the incense that has links to the occult. Don’t use it. It is only superstition.

As a Catholic sacramental, salt blessed by the liturgical prayer of a priest may be used by itself, unmixed, as in exorcisms, and formerly in the exorcistic prayer at baptism, or it may be mixed with water to make holy water, as the Ritual prescribes (reminiscent of Elisha’s miracle). In whichever form, it is intended to be an instrument of grace to preserve one from the corruption of evil occurring as sin, sickness, demonic influence, etc.

Thus used non-superstitiously, modest amounts of salt may be sprinkled in one’s bedroom, or across thresholds to prevent burglary, in cars for safety, etc. A few grains in drinking water or used in cooking or as food seasoning often bring astonishing spiritual and physical benefits, as I have personally witnessed many times. As with the use of Sacraments, much depends on the faith and devotion of the person using salt or any sacramental. This faith must be Jesus-centered, as was the faith of the blind man in John 9; he had faith in Jesus, not in the mud and spittle used by Jesus to heal him.

Burning of incense is a symbol of our prayers rising to heaven. It’s only one of the many smells and bells that we use in the Church to simply enhance our worship experience. The burning of the incense has nothing to do with ridding of negative spirits or whatever … And the scents used in the Church were those that were brought to Our Lord as gifts from the Kings.

Your incense burning is way off and almost wiccan in nature.

Thanks for the good advice. I think you are right, and I should talk to my Priest about blessing my home. I don’t want to risk my beautiful, innocent son, having any influence with anything demonic, if that’s what it is. So, maybe, just in case, I will get in touch with my Parish Priest.

You would need to see your priest to bless the salt anyway. Just get some ordinary salt from the supermarket. Ask him to use this prayer. This is the Exorcism Blessing.

About the white sage: recently Michelle Arnold answered a question about this in the “Ask an Apologist” section of this forum. She said you may burn sage if you approach it as a Christian, saying Christian prayers etc. and making it a Christian rite of spiritual cleansing. So it should be all right to do this!

Absolutely. I had some friends who were secretly involved with occultic practices in the past, and I’ve seen/felt some things in their homes that really freaked me out. That stuff scares me big-time…and it seems that the Catholic Church has much better resources for dealing with such things. Definitely will continue to pray for you all.

With the incense, do not use it as Ashurie recommended doing. Incense does not cleanse anything. It is used in Christian prayer, but only as an enhance to prayer. It can make your prayer more effective because of the atmosphere it gives off, or because of its symbolism. Do not ever treat it as if the incense itself can solve your problem. To do so is to commit the sin of superstition, and to be regressing back to your older occult practices.

The term “negative energies” is just about meaningless: “energy” is a scientific term with a very precise meaning, and spirits of any kind do not factor into it.

Do-it-yourself exorcisms or faux-exorcisms are an very, very, very bad idea.

If you are really concerned about some possible supernatural influence, I concur with DJang: ask a priest for a blessing, and talk to him about your concerns!

Actually, if I were you I would ask for a blessing in any case, just to be on the safe side.

I was going to suggest a incense, that I have brought before to invoke Angels into my home (when I lived in a very rough area, by myself - and I am 23 y/o…and it did bring comfort to me), thinking it would be the better, as it was made and blessed by St. Benedict Monks here in Australia (and Angel Eyes is Australian) … the incense contains the gifts that were presented to Jesus at his birth.

…but some are making a big deal about incense…

…so that is there for Angel Eyes to see, but in all honestly, I am not going to argue about incense seriously not worth it…I have made my suggestions and I will leave it as it is.
