The Emmanuel Community is a Charismatic Community - recognized by the Church - which is a wonderful example of the mission of the Holy Spirit in the Church and the responce people to his call emmanuelcommunity.com/about.html

Fr. Robert Faricy is one you might recongnize, he is one of the leaders of the community. It is a good example of how it all works together. Here are some links to talks you can download robertfaricy.org/cgi/library.php

I just finished listening “Spiritual Warfare and Inner Healing and Prayer”, all 6 tracks, by Fr. Faricy. It is quite interesting.

This reminded me of my own experiences back in 1985 and 1992. Both times were with the same priest of Jesuit who has passed away by now. Both times were to do with charismatic prayers. The first time was a one on one session. The second time was in a weekend retreat and charismatic prayer meeting. The power of Holy Spirit was awesome and real. The 1985 experience was a tremendous turning point for my faith. I had a real and deep encounter with our Lord Jesus. The peace I have experienced was beyond any human understanding and description. During the 1992 charismatic meeting, I received the gift of speaking in tongue after being laid on hands.

I have been reading books of contemplation and find no conflict between contemplative and charismatic. Actually, I think some of the charismatic experience could be a different way of tapping into certain sense of contemplation. I don’t know if it is proper to say so. What I mean is certain charismatic experience brings the strong reality and intensive sense of “being with” Jesus. It is mystic.

One thing that I’ve been struggling with is that why one has to practice some words, for instance, he repeats “A, B, C” or something alike, or even calling “Jesus” many times to ask for the gift of speaking tongue?

I can’t understand why we just pray and be patient rather than doing something like this. I am just afraid we are calling God in vain.

Which tape are you referring to? The ones I listened to was casting out evil spirit, not asking for the gift of tongue.
But one thing I can assure you is that the name of Jesus is the most powerful word in this entire universe.

When we, as God’s children, are calling his Holy name for protection, it is never in vain. Especially when commanding bondage and evil spirit to leave, as the tape was talking about, the name of Jesus is the name to use.** “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth…” Philippians 2:10**

Tell me please, 1 Corinth12 and 13; and Galat 5:22, speak of the Gifts(all) so why is it that some gifts e.g. speaking in toungs. healing the sick (is Jesus name), prophcy, deliverance (in Jesus name), word of knowledge, miricals (in Jesus name) seem to be left out of conversation or placement in the church or seemingly not very worthy of use? Not all people have the gift of Love it seems. otherwise there would be no reason for the other gifts to be mentioned if we did.
I remember a reading that says “if I am a thumb and not a hand(or something) does not say that I am not worthy to be part of the body” ALL parts are part of the body (the body being the church) Jesus said.
Please enlighten me.
There are two great categories or groups of graces: sanctifying, and charismatic.

sanctifying category. They are: wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety and fear of the Lord.

They each perfect certain basic virtues. Four of them perfect the intellectual virtues. Understanding gives an intuitive penetration into truth. Wisdom perfects charity, in order to judge divine things. Knowledge perfects the virtue of hope. The gift of counsel perfects prudence.

The other three gifts perfect virtues of the will and appetites. The gift of piety perfects justice in giving to others that which is their due. This is especially true of giving God what is His due. Fortitude perfects the virtue of fortitude, in facing dangers. Fear of the Lord perfects temperance in controlling disordered appetites.

charismatic. These graces are not aimed directly an making the recipient holy. They are for some other sort of benefit to the individual or the community. There are two kinds of charismatic graces: ordinary and extraordinary.

ordinary gifts–e.g, the gift to be a good parent or a good teacher–and the extraordinary gifts, those which are or seem miraculous, such as the gifts of healing, tongues, or miracles.

This might enlighten you in some way.
When i went to a prayer meeting for the first time about 1975, i thought that this was heaven, the peace the joy the power of the freedome of ther Holy Spirit was felt by me for the first time.
Wow and some one said that someone had a vision and they should speak it out??? I knew that I had a vision and it was so beautiful. However I also understood the vision, and it was about myself so i didn’t say anything. And then…all these english speaking people turned into other people, what?? How come, I thought that these opeople were english now i can’t understand them…what kind of game was this.
I asked my cousin latter who told me that they were speaking in toungs…what don’t we all speak with our toung? No! he said it is a gift from the Holy spirit and in this instance it is to edify the church. Oh yeh? Well that was new. And also he said a person can speak in toungs in prayer when the get toung tired and the Holy Spirit takes over, well I sure was learning. And again a person can speak in toungs when praying aginst a spirit and the spirit can’t understand because the gift of speaking in toungs is a gift from God. Once again a person can speak in toungs in deliverence and satin doesn’t understand it which allows the prayer to flow more readily.

I refused to learn to speak in toungs since it was (I thought) one of the lesser gifts, and I had heard people in our Catholic church say you will know people of the spirit because they speake in toungs! I refused to accept that, and what about the saints?

One day at work I was on a log loader and I had to stop and look at this thing in front of me and on the ground. i picked it up and it was a book called " They speak in other toungs". I didnt want to read it but it was as though i was being pushed to read the book. It was writen by a non christian person who became a christian through learning to speak in toungs.
So I learned to speak in toungs through saying the word Aba father, Aba father, over and over again. Now i speak it at will or when prompted by the Holy Spirit.

Other gifts came latter when I read the scripture " If you have faith the size of a mustard seed you can move mountains". I thought, what kind of a God is this that speaks about moving mountains who would want to anyway? Then I realised that mountains were obsticals in the way of a persons faith or other.

I tried it out straight away. It was windy and I was cleaning up an area at work so I looked up at the skies and said "In the name of Jesus Christ wind I rebuke you and tell you to stop while I do my work: Well it happened time and time again. So I tried it at other situations until people started to call for healing of illnesses.
I saw a persons foot lengthen to the same length of her other foot once.
All of this was so hubbling, I fond that if God spoke to us this way in the Bible then How great is He really?
What an amazing God we have, His spirit is so …so undescribable. he is “I AM” Love for ever. We just have to be there the Holy Spirit does the work if we allow Him to, he is a gentle man and will not push but will wait for us to ask Him to come.

Well…God bless:)

Thank you for all this it is very good for me.
I work alone at night where there are druggs drunkenness etc, doing Security. I rely on “Where there is fear there is no love” so I refuse to have fear and will go about knowing that God is there with me at all times.
Fear of the Lord perfects temperance in controlling disordered appetites. does disorderd mean smoking drink druggs etc?

Thank you for your concern!

I didn’t listen to any tape, but I attended the seminar. After the fourth day of this first seminar, I came home and prayed with the rosary. All of a sudden, the tongue language came out. I have not practiced like the way it was mentioned. In fact, I had had no clue about praying in tongue when I came to this seminar. I was just praying for the Holy Spirit’s gift. I have always desired to help the sick; therefore, I pray to have the gift of healing. However, the priest said that I should ask for the gift of speaking in tongue which might lead to other gifts. That was how I started to pray for this gift.

The night I first received the gift while praying with the rosary. While closing my eyes, I saw many human figures in white flying up …accompanied by many white figures with wings. In my mind, when praying in tongue, I asked Jesus and Mary if they were the holy souls being lifted up to the Heaven at the moment I was praying with the rosary. My head was knocked down so many times when I asked the question.

The next few days, I felt so much joy and felt the presence of God and angels surrounding me.

Then, few days later, I started to do some research on the gift of speaking in tongue. (Note that I had no clue about this gift when going to this seminar - the gift came to me so quickly that I did not how to react).

The more I do research the more I felt uncomfortable about how others have to practice about this gift. Then I started to pray normally and ask God to give me just some ordinary gifts that help me get closer to Him. This is how I started to discover the beauty of the Bible and the Rosary, and how sinful I was.

My life has been changed ever since, and I do believe that the Holy Spirit has done great work on my soul. I want to praise Him for His Love, but I am now aware that how little I know of the Bible and how wicked Satan could be. I’ve decided to pray as normal to avoid Satan’s trick. I am not saying that everything from the seminar is of Satan, but it can blend it and pretend some of it. I do not want to hurt God unintentionally or intentionally.

Although, I have stopped praying in tongue, I keep my heart and mind opened to find the truth about this, and to pray for having faith in Jesus. For now, when I pray with the Rosary, I sometimes see images that I never thought of. Images such as Pope John Paul II, World Trade Center, the Golden bridge, some war tanks and trucks, storms and people struggling in the storm, some dying poor people. Some other time, I see bad images. If the images were not pleasant, I just asked God to take it away from my mind. For other good images, I just prayed about what I believe Mother Virgin Mary wants me to pray.

Have you seen such images while praying in tongue?

Sometimes, I am afraid that I do not use the gift that the Holy Spirit has given me; other times, I am afraid not to use because I don’t want to offend God for using something that I am not so sure it is all from God. Saint Faustina wrote in her diary that God blesses those souls who did not use such a gift because they weren’t sure and that they did not want to offend God.

Thanks!

Novena Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel
Glorious Saint Michael, guardian and defender of the Church of Jesus Christ, come to the assistance of His followers, against whom the powers of hell are unchained. Guard with special care our Holy Father, the Pope, and our bishops, priests, all our religious and lay people, and especially the children.

Saint Michael, watch over us during life, defend us against the assaults of the demon, and assist us especially at the hour of death. Help us achieve the happiness of beholding God face to face for all eternity. Amen.

Saint Michael, intercede for me with God in all my necessities, especially {mention special petition}. Obtain for me a favorable outcome in the matter I recommend to you. Mighty prince of the heavenly host, and victor over rebellious spirits, remember me for I am weak and sinful and so prone to pride and ambition. Be for me, I pray, my powerful aid in temptation and difficulty, and above all do not forsake me in my last struggle with the powers of evil. Amen.

Padre Pio
See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Be attentive to him and heed his voice. Do not rebel against him, for he will not forgive your sin. My authority resides in him. If you heed his voice and carry out all I tell you, I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes. (Ex 23:20-22)

Invoke often this Guardian Angel, this benevolent Angel and repeat the beautiful prayer: ‘Oh Angel of God’ (etc.) … What will be, oh my dear Raffaelina, the consolation when, at the moment of death, your soul will see this Angel, so good, who accompanied you through life and was so liberal in maternal care. Oh may this sweet thought make you grow always more fond of the Cross of Jesus, this being also what your good Angel wants. May the desire to see this inseparable companion arouse in you that charity which incites you to leave this body quickly. The angels, for their part, like true friends were happy to perform this little service for their proteges, especially the ones who habitually listened to their guidance. Since the angel can do nothing contrary to the will of God, God Himself must have desired it Not everyone listens attentively to their guardian angel, however, as he seeks to enlighten them through the voice of conscience to avoid sin, or gives them good inspirations to the love and service of God and neighbor. Certainly Padre Pio was one who did, from the earliest years of life, so that God granted him the vision not only of his own guardian angel but those of others. Many times it was through the guardian angel of a person that their need was brought to Padre Pio’s attention, who then prayed for that person.

Terrific post! 👍

Fear of the Lord perfects temperance in controlling disordered appetites. does disorderd mean smoking drink druggs etc?
A dosordered appetite is an appetite for something that is contrary to nature. For example, an extreme appetite for food is not truly disordered because appetite is a faculty by which we obtain what we need: food. If we indulge our appetite for food beyond what is needful for our survival and health, then we go overboard into gluttony but we are not craving what is truly bad for us.

If we have an appetite for something that is damaging: drugs, tobacco, pornography, those things are not natural appetites rightly ordered towards a natural good. So I would say: yes to your question. Drugs, and tobacco are disordered appetites. I would be a little cautious about calling alcohol a disordered “appetite.” Although we do not need alcohol to live, Our Lord saw fit to use wine to represent his live-giving blood. So, I would say that as with food, an appetite for wine, within the bounds of good health, is not essentially disordered but can become harmful if it becomes an addiction or causes one to lose self control

Thank you for that information it is very thorough and very explanitory.
How are we in that case to relate to and achieve irradication of such disordered appetites such as cigarettes. Is it not a sin to over dose what takes our thought words and deeds away from the temple of God that we are supposed to be?

According to my own experience and all the occasions I have witnessed and all the information I have learned, the gift of tongue is a given, not anything one can practice and obtain.

Like infused contemplation, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are also completely from God.
There is no way men can initiate it. Therefore, I don’t understand what you said about practicing and get it. It should not be like that. Unless those people are practicing tongue after having received it. We cannot practice to receive the gift of tongue. But once we have received the gift, yes, like anything else, practice will make it better. If that is what it is.

Usually, this gift is imparted by some Holy Spirit filled, and Holy Spirit anointed person through laying hands as a point of contact. This person could either be a clergy or a lay person. The Holy Spirit is a gentleman. He will never force any gift upon anyone. If one does not have strong desire to receive this gift, one usually will not get it.

Most likely, the impartation of the gift of tongue happens during charismatic gathering.
The reason is that during such gathering, there are many Holy Spirit filled people present.
And the collective anointing is very strong. It happens that a person does not receive the gift in the meeting but several days later. That is not rare at all.

Praying in tongue is a gift. If you truly receive the gift from God, don’t be afraid to use it.
Satan does not want us to use any gift from God. If your gift is from God, it is not “using it” makes you fall into the trap of Satan, actually the trap is being afraid of using it.

I have received this gift many years ago. Honestly, I don’t pray in tongue as I ought to. When I occasionally pray in tongue, in private, I have no vision at all. All I know is I am praising God. When I had the real deep encounter with Jesus back in 1985, there were some very vivid visions. Usually I have no vision when I pray. Visions, again, is given. One can never imagine a “vision” into mind.

You may want to read Acts 2.

I encourage you to read Bible daily if you haven’t been doing so. No matter what format of prayer we use, vocal, mental, in tongue, meditation, contemplation, or the combination of them, God’s Word, the Bible, is always the basic.

When we fill ourselves with the word of God and follow His commandments, we can better hear His voice and discern His will.

God bless!

It is so wonderful to have a good discussion about this, **thank you all.

**When I lay hands on someone for prayer in tongues, I ask them to simply pray Abba. The mind is engaged and I know they are crying out to Jesus with an open heart.I feel that while praying in tongues it is very important to not pray with an ‘empty mind’ so to speak. But to seek God mentally during prayer, in praise to Abba, our Almighty Father through Jesus Christ his son, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Then Jesus will reveal what it is he desires you to see. As was said eariler, in his name every knee shall bow.

Meditation is so important, but until someone is confident in praying and listening, it is good to keep focused on the Giver of the Gifts.

Like the prayers posted, always placing yourself in the protection of Jesus, Blessed Mother, and the Heavenly Hosts. This is a good prayer to use also…
“Dear Lord Jesus, please surround me (family/friends/or the particular person that you are praying for) with a perimeter of Your Love and Protection throughout the day today and everyday a hundred yards in all directions. Lord Jesus, render any demons that are there, or should try to come, deaf, dumb, and blind. Strip them of all weapons, illusions, armor, power, and authority. Disable them from communicating or interacting in any way. Bind, sever, and separate them, sending them directly to the foot of Your Cross without manifestation or harm to be dealt with by you Jesus. May Your Precious Blood cover me, the Holy Spirit fill me, Mary’s mantle of love and protection surround me, St. Joseph guide me, the Holy Angels and Saints guard and protect me from all unfortunate events. Protect me from fire, theft, flood, storms, ailments, and accidents of every sort, distress, hardship, curse, and all untoward things. I ask all this in your Name Lord Jesus and I thank and praise you. I love you. Alleluia. Amen!”

And most importantly praying as Jesus taught us…
Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen…

Montanism 2nd century heresy
And he became beside himself, and being suddenly in a sort of frenzy and ecstasy, he raved, and began to babble and utter strange things, prophesying in a manner contrary to the constant custom of the Church handed down by tradition from the beginning

Chapter XVI.—The Circumstances related of Montanus and his False Prophets
ccel.org/ccel/schaff/npnf201.iii.x.xvii.html

26 And if one member suffer any thing, all the members suffer with it; or if one member glory, all the members rejoice with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members of member. 28 And God indeed hath set some in the church; first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly doctors; after that miracles; then the graces of healing, helps, governments, kinds of tongues, interpretations of speeches. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all doctors? 30 Are all workers of miracles? Have all the grace of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But be zealous for the better gifts. And I shew unto you yet a more excellent way.

28 But if there be no interpreter, let him hold his peace in the church, and speak to himself and to God.

Gift of Tongues
newadvent.org/cathen/14776c.htm4 For wisdom will not enter into a malicious soul, nor dwell in a body subject to sins. 5 For the Holy Spirit of discipline will flee from the deceitful, and will withdraw himself from thoughts that are without understanding, and he shall not abide when iniquity cometh in. 6 For the spirit of wisdom is benevolent, and will not acquit the evil speaker from his lips: for God is witness of his reins, and he is a true searcher of his heart, and a hearer of his tongue. 7 For the spirit of the Lord hath filled the whole world: and that, which containeth all things, hath knowledge of the voice. 8 Therefore he that speaketh unjust things cannot be hid, neither shall the chastising judgment pass him by. 9 For inquisition shall be made into the thoughts of the ungodly: and the hearing of his words shall come to God, to the chastising of his iniquities. 10 For the ear of jealousy heareth all things, and the tumult of murmuring shall not be hid. 11 Keep yourselves therefore from murmuring, which profiteth nothing, and refrain your tongue from detraction, for an obscure speech shall not go for nought: and the mouth that belieth, killeth the soul.{Book Of Wisdom)

Pagans had that too
The fact that each person mumbles differently matters not a whit. God, angels, and anointed ministers, we are told, are able to understand. Technically, this psychological phenomenon is known as glossolalia. Early Methodists, Quakers, Shakers, and Mormons adopted it, then de-emphasized it. It fell into disuse until about 1830, when it reappeared in England among “females of excitable temperament,” Until recently, there was not much emphasis on it in Christianity but now the Pentecostal sects have revived it.
Non-Christian glossolalia predates the modern version considerably, being described in very ancient religions and known in primitive societies untouched by Christianity. It was known to Plato, who described it in use in his day: Greek and Roman oracles spoke in tongues. Virgil wrote, in the Aenead, Book Six, about a Roman Sibyl who babbled that way. Moslems embraced the idea, too.

John Arnott says in the church he Pastors (Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship) August 1997: "You would think you walked into a mad house or something. Well we have had one year to acclimatize. If we had started with this at this level we would not have had the faith to go on. I know as a pastor, I would have shut it down. … “How many have never been to a church like this in their lives raise your hands.”

I glad to see some have had good experiences with gifts. I for one have not. The devil will go to great lengths to discredit testimony of any gift from God. I hope my experience’s are over. The last year has strenghened my faith that God protects and loves me, but I don’t want to be tested like that again. The last year has been a nightmare and a blessing at the same time. Tim

Therefore, I don’t understand what you said about practicing and get it. It should not be like that. Unless those people are practicing tongue after having received it. We cannot practice to receive the gift of tongue.

It comes from my own parish and the book they had given to read. I am the only person at the church having the gift and being afraid of using it.

When I was with them, the main person who was in charge of the praying group ask one person who did not have the gift to repeatedly calling out a strange word. The book they let me borrow to read written by a priest, citing some witnesses who said they practiced saying “A B C” (alphabets) and later were able to speak the tongue langue. According to this priest, everybody has already had this gift, but they have not discovered it.

Furthermore, at my parish, they told me that if your strange language doesn’t sound right, then it comes from Satan.

You see that I am so confused because some people believe we should only pray to receive the gift, such as you, but some others say you ‘practice’ to get this gift…Some having this gift also say it can come from Satan.

Also, now, because I did not practice, I got the gift; likewise, some people practice and they also get the gift. How exactly do I know for sure which one is coming from God …knowing that anyone can practice and get the gift?

It sounds strange and that is my concern. If everyone just prays for it and receive it, I would have no doubt.

I know the fact that in the Bible it says about the gift; however, what we are doing today is a confusion. Each person gives me different answer.

Thanks!

If you would like a good forum to read articles and discussions from on the Holy Spirit, his gifts, and the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, you may want to check out The Catholic Charismatic Center on the World Wide Web
ccc.garg.com/index.php

I want to agree first with Pani Rose about we Catholic Charismatics and the Holy Eucharist.
I have spent nearly 40 years in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Watched Church Communities grow and flourish and watched them wither and die.
Both the strong ones and the frail ones have certain things in common.
I will do my best to give my perception of each.
Strong, growing and flourishing Charismatic Communites, the strongest, have solid pastoral participation. It is great if a Priest or Deacon in the Community blesses the Renewal but it is great when they participate. In our Parish Prayer Group, we have both of our priests as well as two priest from our neighboring parish and another from another close by parish that rotate and have a Charismatic Mass every First Friday.
The other thing is our core group are committed to frequent Confession and whenever possible daily Communion. We also spend time in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
Genuine, Catholic Charismatic Renewal will always bring the group closer to the Sacraments and are active in building up the Body of Christ. That may mean evangelizing your Catholic brothers and sisters, evangelizing non-Christians and being active in the Parish. I sincerely believe that every Sacrament preparation class should have Charismatics involved.

The Prayer Groups that slowly fade are the ones that do not adhere to their Catholic base. Many times the Prayer Group leadership wander out to non-Catholic Charismatic communities when they are not fully grounded in the Catholic faith. They pick up teachings that are not in agreement with Catholic teaching.
They introduce cliche’s and mannerisms that they see in other groups. They are not allowing the Holy Spirit to lead but are trying to lead themselves by what they see, away from the Church.

These are strictly my observations.

Now, there are several techniques used by various prayer groups to allow the gift of tongues to be manifested. The gift does take participation of ones own will.
The way that has always worked with me is to have the person praise and worship the Lord in english (if that is your language), out loud trying not to continue to repeat yourself until you run out of words. In the meantime, one or two prayer partners are laying hands on you and praying in tongues. If you are fully focused on Jesus and trying to tell him how wonderful he is and how much you love him and simply find english language to limited, you will often let go of english and go right into tongues.
This always brings forth the Fruits of the Spirit, Peace, Love and pure Joy.

Hope this helps a little bit.

May the Love, Peace and Joy be with you all, now and for eternity.

Thanks!
This is the first time I’ve ever heard that people actually call out some strange words and try to get the gift of tongue by practicing it. I don’t know about to call out strange words and try to invoke tongue.

Who are the people in your parish said “if your strange language doesn’t sound right, then it comes from Satan”? All tongues sound different. How do they know how each tongue should sound like? Who decide what sound is the right sound?

Could fake tongue come from Satan? We all know Satan is a deceiver and a liar. If anyone makes up his own sound and pretend speaking in tongue, that is meaningless and self cheating.

Acts 2:17 – “It will come to pass in the last days,” God says, “that I will pour out a portion of my spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams.”

It is clear God means to pour out His Spirit. Tongue is one gift of the Spirit. If the gift is already in us, then God does not need to pour out His Spirit any more.

1 Cor 14:4 “Whoever speaks in a tongue builds himself up.” Tongue is a legitimate gift according to God’s word. It is not a heresy.

If a person receives the gift from the Holy Spirit, when using it, the fruits should be peace and joy. A gift is to receive, and the giver is the Holy Spirit.

It will be helpful to prayerfully read** Acts 2** and 1 Corinthians 14. When we have a question, the first source should be our Bible.
