Now, there are several techniques used by various prayer groups to allow the gift of tongues to be manifested. The gift does take participation of ones own will.
The way that has always worked with me is to have the person praise and worship the Lord in english (if that is your language), out loud trying not to continue to repeat yourself until you run out of words. In the meantime, one or two prayer partners are laying hands on you and praying in tongues. If you are fully focused on Jesus and trying to tell him how wonderful he is and how much you love him and simply find english language to limited, you will often let go of english and go right into tongues.
This always brings forth the Fruits of the Spirit, Peace, Love and pure Joy.
That is well said. As far as I know the format of receiving the gift of tongue always have lots of singing, praising, followed by laying hands. As you mentioned, it takes participatin of one’s own will.
God will not force upon the gift on anyone. Even in giving the gift, He respects our free will. Just like our salvation, receive it or not, it is out of our own choice.

This informatin may help. But please remember that these points are a little of what we all learn in the many years of the spirit.🙂

One of you mentioned that the main person who was in charge of the praying group ask one person who did not have the gift to repeatedly call out a strange word. I have heard of that usually I heard the Lords prayer or Abba Father. I agree with Abba Father which is what I learned on because in repeatedly praying (and it is) those words, I felt my whole heart lifting to the Father and I felt so light. I still didn’t seem to get any strange word but I didn’t try to either since the feeling within me was all I wanted to feel at that time.

I knew it was the Holy Spirit and I wasn’t going to fight Him. I just went along with Him letting go of my thoughts feelings, I was in a love that I wanted to be completely engulfed into. I wanted God to take complete control. At that time He was.

Water you mentioned that at your parish, they told you that if your strange language doesn’t sound right, then it comes from Satan. I don’t think that that would be correct and others at the meeting would know if satin was there because one of the main gifts in group meetings is “Discernment” where the leader for one, or an appointed person lead by the Holy Spirit, would discern the situation and call the person aside. Maybe that’s what you were saying?

You see that I am so confused because some people believe we should only pray to receive the gift, such as you, but some others say you ‘practice’ to get this gift…Some having this gift also say it can come from Satan.
Satin CANNOT give praise to God and Jesus Himself told us that only a person who has the spirit can say Jesus is Lord. When you are at a prayer meeting there are certain fruits that come forth the Fruits of the Spirit, Peace, Love and pure Joy, dicernment are some of them.
As has been mentioned, it is not right to say that “if your strange language doesn’t sound right, then it comes from Satan”? All tongues sound different. How do they know how each tongue should sound like? Who decides what sound is the right sound? …Answer THE HOLY SPIRIT.
**Discernment **is a gift that all should ask for so that the person praying, speaking, healing, prophesying or what ever is taught by the Holy Spirit when it is the Holy Spirit speaking. It is best to not have much to say but to have much to listen to then in discernment take it to God to ask Him what is for you and what is not.

Robertaf I certainly agree with your statement when you say that, Genuine, Catholic Charismatic Renewal will always bring the group closer to the Sacraments and are active in building up the Body of Christ. That may mean evangelizing your Catholic brothers and sisters, evangelizing non-Christians and being active in the Parish. I sincerely believe that every Sacrament preparation class should have Charismatics involved.
Once again about tongs, and as has been mentioned If you are fully focused on Jesus, and trying to tell him how wonderful he is, and how much you love him. But simply find English language to limited, you will often let go of English and go right into tongues. I use tongs in my own prayer (glorification) needs, suffering, offering my self in services, in discernment, deliverance, healing, (but not always the spirit shows what He wants) when I want something else, get tong tired. I speak in tongs especially in healing and deliverance because satin cannot understand the spirit of God in a languish God gives us. This always brings forth the Fruits of the Spirit, Peace, Love and pure Joy.

Inlight247 you mentioned that this is the first time I’ve ever heard that people actually call out some strange words and try to get the gift of tongue by practicing it. I don’t know about to call out strange words and try to invoke tongue. As far as I am concerned I don’t actually practice tongs because with what little or large amount of language one is given it is praise to God not an earthly setting. So if I am guilty of saying practice please accept my apology.

Here are some readings that might help.

These readings are all positive I combine them with **Galatians 5 :22, **the gifts of the spirit and against the flesh then I go to 1 Corinthians 13 to put my thoughts with (love to see where it leads to ) and then I go to James 3:5 to see where I am at (all this I seek in asking the Holy Spirit to guide me for I am no good without Him),
We can remember that as mentioned *Acts 2:17 – “It will come to pass in the last days,” God says, “that I will pour out a portion of my spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams.”

It is clear God means to pour out His Spirit. Tongue is one gift of the Spirit. If the gift is already in us, then God does not need to pour out His Spirit any more.

1 Cor 14:4 “Whoever speaks in a tongue builds himself up.” Tongue is a legitimate gift according to God’s word. It is not a heresy.

If a person receives the gift from the Holy Spirit, when using it, the fruits should be peace and joy. A gift is to receive, and the giver is the Holy Spirit.

It will be helpful to prayerfully read Acts 2 and 1 Corinthians 14. When we have a question, the first source should be our Bible.*

One last point as Jesus mentioned, “if I am a fingure and not a foot that does not mean to say that there is no place for me”. The spirit gives as He sees the need of God’s will being unfolded.
God bless.

Who are the people in your parish said “if your strange language doesn’t sound right, then it comes from Satan”?
It was one of the ladies who not only has the gift of speaking in tongue but also being able to cast out demons…etc.

Thanks for all the verses. I did read all about praying in tongue in Bible. I have no problem with what it is written in the Bible, but I have problem with people who have given different answers which confuse me a lot.

Thanks!

Hello LittleOne,

They also asked me to pray for being able to discern. One of the ladies ask me to pray out loud and then she said I shouldn’t be worried about my gift - it is from God. It is the same lady who said that some might get this tongue language from the Satan.

One time I was letting another lay hand on me. She had no idea that I was doubting, but after praying she told me that a voice in her head told her that I should have not worried.

Also, I have you read the part where it says that Satan can pretend as an angel? That was what happened at my parish where one lady said that she saw angel and saints for few days. At first, this ‘angel’ or ‘saint’ told her to get rid of something at her house, then later days, told her to destroy her husband’s piano. She was worried and came to the parish to ask others for advice. The others told her that this ‘angelic’ figure must be Satan.

Some other cases, people after receiving this gift; I can see many people become so devoted, others become self-center thinking that Jesus told them to do things and they don’t want to follow advices’ of their fellows at my parish.

All these happening around me make me doubt.
Of course, I am always thirst for the gift of the Holy Spirit. I want to be able to live my life remained in the Bible, and to be Holy. That’s why I came here for.

Thanks!

Hi there!
It seems to me that you might have a problem in the group, and this can happen where no matter how many people have gifts there can be a crossing where two or more think (instead of dicerning) that the Holy Spirit is telling them to say something and there becomes a conflict of interests.
By your repeatedly reading the new testement and relate all you do to the New Testement especially Jesus in the Gospels, you will understand and relate more in dicernment. then not only but also (if you can) do what Jesus did, feeding the poor, sharing with others going to the Hospital and then the Word becomes alive. I make apoint of inviting those less able to join me if I am traveling.

then not only but also (if you can) do what Jesus did, feeding the poor, sharing with others going to the Hospital and then the Word becomes alive. I make apoint of inviting those less able to join me if I am traveling.
Indeed, the confusion has lead me to do what you have advised. With God’s grace, I’ve become to see the homeless, the sickness, and others with loving and caring. Of course, I am still working on it to truely love all.

I hope you don’t mind my telling you something here.
It is good that you are doing what you are doing. There are gifts that come with those actions.
You will remember how Jesus said to those who (goats) cast out demons, healed the sick, etc. Jesus said “be gone from me you evil doers” Reason, because the next part was, When I was (name removed by moderator)risoned , infirmed,. with no food, no clothing, you did not come to my aid. Then the sheep came and Jesus told them to come to Him for they had fed the hungry clothed the naked, seen the ill etc. The sheep then said, “when did we do this”? and Jesus said when you did it to the least you did it to Me!

You see that here is the crux of it all. In reading the word, you learn to understand, in serving you take that “living word” give it life and in doing so begin to live that word which is Jesus. His greatest gift to mankind and that He desires all people to follow is…Mercy.
What you are doing is to give life to the word (allow Jesus to live through your choice of serving Him in serving others).
With that, you born into yourself every gift there is it is called “LOVE”.

One thing I will say to you, Don’t expect to be understood, the world didn’t understand Jesus or those who followed Him. However your actions guided by the Holy Spirit will at times leave you in tears as Jesus touches you allows you to feel that closeness to Him that is given to those who follow the way of the cross, the way of “Divine Love”

I do believe that every Charismatic Prayer Group needs a good solid Core Group and when necessary a Prayer Group Leader.
We operated for quite sometime with the Core Group leading the Prayer Meetings, rotating leadership, along with a good Music ministry.
The Lord then lifted up a Prayer Group Leader out of the Prayer Group. However, we have elected him for only one year. The Core Group still is solid Prayer Support and are in Leadership.
Our Diocese Charismatic Liaison, puts on a Leadership Retreat and Training every year. It is a long weekend Retreat, Friday evening through Sunday. We have a wonderful Charismatic Retreat leader who ministers to us folks in Leadership. It also gives us the opportunity to fellowship with each other and you have no idea how important that is.
Most of the time, we are in a constant state of not only ministering to a few mature Charismatics but also many new Charismatics. It is an awesome thing for a large group of Leaders to get together, almost always folks who have been in the Renewal for no less than a decade. Many of us since the Renewal began.
It is so edifying to see the boldness, the spontinaity and the maturity of the word gifts.
This is not to put down our weekly Prayer Group nor does it mean we do not love and appreciate our Prayer Group family. It is because we love them so much and take their growth so seriously that we need to get our batteries recharged and to get centered once again with basics.
We pray for and with each other, receive Communion together and Praise and Worship the Lord together.

We love our Sacramento Bishops so much for the support we get from them.

If your Diocese does not have such a Retreat, I suggest you contact your Liaison for the Charismatic Renewal and help plan one.

We spend every week feeding folks Spiritually and sometimes we need a little additional feeding ourselves.

Yes, I do read that part, and it helps me a lot about my volunteer works. I’ve also realized that we cannot understand all about God; that is why faith comes in. I am just on the safe-mode not to hurt Him unintentionally.

Thank you!

** A Statement from
the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops
on the Charismatic Renewal**

Foreword

As part of the preparation for the Great Jubilee Year 2000, Pope John Paul II has asked the Church to focus on the role and charisms of the Holy Spirit. Our Ad Hoc Committee for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal felt it was appropriate to issue a statement of affirmation, support and encouragement to those who have experienced the release of gifts and charisms of the Holy Spirit – known as baptism in the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1: 4) Specifically on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the United States, we desire to affirm the positive impact this move of the Spirit has had in the lives of millions of people and through them the life of the Church.
Because we believe that God in His great love for His people continues to fulfill His promise to pour out His Spirit anew, we have entitled this statement – “Grace for the New Springtime.” We are reminded of the words of Peter on Pentecost in reference to the vision he had of the future impact this anointing and empowerment by the Holy Spirit would have: “It was to you and your children that the promise was made and to all those still far off whom the Lord our God calls.” (Acts 2:39)

As We Prepare for the Third Millennium

On the occasion of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal’s thirtieth anniversary, as well as the one hundredth anniversary of Pope Leo XIIII’s encyclical on the Holy Spirit, Divinum Illud, we, the U.S. Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee on the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, want to affirm again all those Catholics involved in this movement of the Holy Spirit in our day. We, likewise, “encourage them in their efforts to renew the life of the Church.” (A Pastoral Statement on the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, 1984, NCCB USCC) As we prepare for the Third Millennium, as called for by Pope John Paul II in his Apostolic Letter, Tertio Millennio Adveniente (As the Third Millennium Draws Near), we believe the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is particularly called and gifted by God to be with the Church as it prepares for the Great Jubilee and for the challenges it faces as we enter the new millennium.
In its thirty years of existence, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal has brought personal spiritual renewal to the lives of millions of priests, deacons, religious, and lay Catholics. It has called countless alienated Catholics to reconciliation with the Lord and with the Church. It has deepened a love for Jesus and the Church among young people as well as so many others, including the unchurched.

Thus, for us, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is one of the signs of hope our Holy Father is referring to as “present in the last part of this century” when he speaks of “a greater attention to the voice of the Spirit through the acceptance of charisms and the promotion of the laity.” (Tertio Millennio Adveniente, 46)
We believe that “the renewed outpouring of the Spirit of Pentecost in our times” (cf. Called and Gifted for the Third Millennium, NCCB USCC) is particularly present in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and in the grace of baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Catholic Charismatic Renewal

As early as 1969, we affirmed the good fruits of the Renewal. Our Holy Father and other Bishops’ Conferences have testified to these abundant fruits. In 1984 we wrote:
“Insofar as the Renewal makes its own what is central to the enduring reality of the Gospel, it cannot be dismissed as peripheral to the life of the Church… It witnesses to elements of the Good News which are central, not optional: the covenant love of the Father, the Lordship of Jesus, the power of the Spirit, sacramental and community life, prayer, charisms, and the necessity of evangelization.” "The Catholic Charismatic Renewal is, as Pope John Paul II said in 1979, “A sign of the Spirit’s action… (and) a very important component in the total renewal of the Church.”

"The Catholic Charismatic Renewal is, as Pope John Paul II said in 1979, “A sign of the Spirit’s action… (and) a very important component in the total renewal of the Church.” Impact of the Renewal on the
Broader Church

Code:
The impact of the Charismatic Renewal on the broader Church has been significant. The Renewal has nourished the call of all to holiness as a gift from the Spirit and helped the Church come to a greater awareness and expectancy of the Holy Spirit and the charismatic gifts of the Spirit. The Charismatic Renewal has led the people of God in a revival of the ministry of healing, encouraging them -- laity and clergy alike -- to pray for the sick with faith and expectancy. It has renewed the appreciation for the role of praise in individual and communal prayer and enriched the Church with many gifted musicians, music ministries, and song writers. The Renewal has taught a commitment to the Pope, the Bishops, and to orthodox teaching. Vocations to priesthood, diaconate, and religious life have been fostered. It has called forth the gifts of the laity who are today serving in a variety of ecclesial lay ministries; e.g., in the liturgy, religious education, and youth ministry, and ministries for the transformation of the world.
Catholic Charismatic Renewal Today
Code:
Among the areas in which the Renewal continues to make an impact today are its response to the Holy Father's call to "new evangelization," the increased awareness of Mary's role in the Church and in individual lives, and in ecumenism.
New Evangelization
Code:
The Renewal is at its best when, from its internal prayerful reflection, it looks outward to the lives of the many, both churched and unchurched, who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. "Charismatic empowerment in community has supplied the Church in this country and throughout the world with a host of committed and effective evangelists bringing the gospel to persons and places otherwise without hope of hearing the good news." (Fanning the Flame, p. 13) The witness of lives lived under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and of fervent Catholics telling others about Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit have always been and continue to be a constitutive part of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and a fruit of the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
Baptism in the Holy Spirit is empowerment of individuals and of the Church for its mission in the world: the proclamation of the Lordship of Jesus Christ and of His power to transform society.
Mary
Code:
Authentic Marian devotion and imitation is a welcome and growing dimension of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the United States. Mary, Mother of the Church, who was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit "when the fullness of time had come" (Gal 4:4), will "lead the men and women of the new millennium toward the One who is `the true light that enlightens every man' (Jn. 1:9)." (Tertio, 59) It is thus with great anticipation that we find within the Renewal this joyful awareness of the relationship of Mary and the Holy Spirit.
Ecumenism
Code:
In this moment in history the Lord has also called us all to a deepened awareness of the brokenness of the Body of Christ. In 1995 the Holy Father issued his twelfth Encyclical, *Ut Unum Sint (That All May Be one)*, in which he states clearly that the Catholic Church is committed "irrevocably to following the path of the ecumenical venture, thus heeding the Spirit of the Lord, who teaches people to interpret carefully the `signs of the times'."(#3) We believe that the Holy Spirit has been poured out in our day to bring about unity of the Body of Christ for which our Lord prayed (Jn 17:2 1). Thus, efforts in authentic ecumenism -- e.g., the Congresses of the Holy Spirit and World Evangelization held in New Orleans (1987), Indianapolis (1990), and Orlando (1995), are some of the great fruits of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. As we stated in 1984, "we see in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal an ecumenical force in which we rejoice."

Baptism in the Holy Spirit

In the Sacraments of Initiation we experience the action of the Triune God. As regards the Third Person of the Trinity, in Baptism we become temples of the Holy Spirit; in Eucharist we share in the Body and Blood of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit; in Confirmation we are empowered with the gifts and charisms of the Spirit to be witnesses for Jesus Christ. In this statement, we want not only to affirm the good fruit of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal but also the grace which is at the heart of this Renewal, namely, baptism in the Holy Spirit, or the fuller release of the Holy Spirit, as some would prefer. As experienced in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal baptism in the Holy Spirit makes Jesus Christ known and loved as Lord and Savior, establishes or reestablishes an immediacy of relationship with all those persons of the Trinity, and through inner transformation affects the whole of the Christian’s life. There is new life and a new conscious awareness of God’s power and presence. It is a grace experience which touches every dimension of the Church’s life: worship, preaching, teaching, ministry, evangelism, prayer and spirituality, service and community. Because of this, it is our conviction that baptism in the Holy Spirit, understood as the reawakening in Christian experience of the presence and action of the Holy Spirit given in Christian initiation, and manifested in a broad range of charisms, including those closely associated with the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, is part of the normal Christian life.

Pastoral Encouragement

We encourage the whole Church to look into and embrace baptism in the Holy Spirit “as the power of personal and communal transformation with all the graces and charisms needed for the upbuilding of the Church and for our mission in the world.” (Fanning the Flame, p. 27) We want also to encourage those in the Renewal to continue to bring an awareness of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit to the Church; to foster balanced devotion to Mary; to teach and grow in the discernment of spiritual experiences and to continue in faithful cooperation with the mission and the vision of the local Church in which they serve. By its shared life, the Renewal can be an example and fostering agent of small Christian communities in the Church. Through the Cross and the “embrace of the paschal mystery” (Called and Gifted for the Third Millennium, p. 24), the Renewal can deepen “life in the Spirit.” We encourage leaders in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal to work to bring the various streams of this Renewal into cooperate unity.
Finally, aware of various pastoral concerns and needs, we want to affirm the National Service Committee and the various ethnic national service committees that have emerged in recent years; diocesan liaisons and their Association of Diocesan Liaisons; the various networks of covenant communities, such as the Fraternity of Catholic Charismatic Communities and Fellowships; and others in providing leadership for the Renewal.

Conclusion

In 1975 Leon Joseph Cardinal Suenens convinced Pope Paul VI of the value of the Renewal for the Church and continued to offer it guidance through the early theological documents called the Malines Documents. Even as recently as five years ago he offered his wisdom to the Renewal at the 1992 National Catholic Charismatic Renewal Conference when, via videotape, he encouraged us to open ourselves fully to the power of God, stressing that today, more than ever before, the world needs the witness of people open to the Spirit. It is the Holy Father’s conviction and ours that we stand on the threshold of a “new springtime for Christianity.” In Tertio Millennio Adveniente, Pope John Paul II states that this “new springtime of Christian life will be revealed by the Great Jubilee if Christians are docile to the action of the Holy Spirit” (#18), and he exhorts his “venerable brothers in the episcopate and the ecclesial communities entrusted” to us to open our “hearts to the promptings of the Spirit” (#59).
Thus, in the spirit of Cardinal Suenens and our Holy Father John Paul II, we say again, with great thanksgiving and enthusiasm, that in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and in the grace of baptism in the Holy Spirit we see God’s outpouring of a new Pentecost. This is a blessing for the Church and for the world as we near the celebration of our Lord’s 2000th birthday and the beginning of the Third Millennium of Christianity.

Hi Pani Rose:

You and I seem to be on the same page. I almost posted exactly the ones you did. If I hadn’t stopped to read, I would have duplicated your post.

Hahaha, What an Awesome Holy Spirit we have!👍

Pani Rose:

Thank you for the posting. I was waiting for and am glad to see **“Baptism in the Holy Spirit” **, the important topic, finally appears on this thread.

Roberta and Light, God is so good!

I just love it when he sets our minds on the same direction. Then we know the Holy Spirit is confirming.

You know when it all comes down to everything is that we are opened up to Jesus Christ and his Holy Spirit and that is what ‘Baptism’ is about. Bringing us into Christ, after all, isn’t that what happened to the Apostles, they were empowered and their eyes were opened. Glory to God!

Hi all yo have taken this to a height that the one question asked at the beginning has (it seems) opened and also enkindeled the love of the Holy spirit in youall.God bless you all.

It seems to me that the Holy Spirit was saying that the time is now to engrose the fullness of Vatican II. The quotes below shows the depth of your heart relationship with the HS in the church.
This is where w keep the home together when the centre is Godthrough NOT large amounts of information based on humanistic educatin, but the guidance in Our church by the HS and through our Priests /Biships and in each one of us.
May God be blessed abundantly through his children. Amen:amen: :bible1: ❤️ :gopray:

I believe that there is another part to come now and I don’t think it should be an attachment to this thread or junction or what ever it may be called.
So …I have started another about the Holy Spirit called… “Living with the Holy Spirit in our lives”
This present thread is so good for so many others as well as we who have many years (sorry about that) of experience in living with the Holy Spirit.
God bless His people for ever and ever.

I wonder if there is a differece in people having different gifts and different churches haveing different gifts also.
So that each church would have a different place in the body of Christ?:hmmm:
