I have another question. Will the Holy Spirit give everyone the gift of tongues if they ask? When they told me everyone can speak in tongues at that church it bothered me. The reason I think that is from reading 1 Corinthians chapter 12. Forgive me if I paraphrase. There are different forms of service and workings but the same God who produces them in everyone. The Spirit give one person this gift, and the next that gift, and so on, including tongues. Then comes verse 11 “But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as He wishes.”
Then St. Paul talks about one body and many parts. In verse 24 he says "But God has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it, so that there may be no division in the body. He then prioritizes the importance of the gifts and asks if all individual members have all the gifts. Do all speak in tongues? The obvious answer is no.
Can the Holy Spirit give the gift of tongues to everyone? Yes! But, He distributes the gifts as He wishes. So, the real question is, Does He wish for everyone to have tongues? I don’t know. So, when I was told that everyone can speak in tongues I was thinking, “Do you presume to know the will of God?” If God doesn’t wish for me to have tongues there is no way I’m getting it.
They cited two verses out of chapter 14 to bolster there case that everyone can speak in tongues. Verse 5 "Now I should like all of you to speak in tongues . . . " and verse 18 “I give thanks to God that I speak in tongues more than any of you.” These verses didn’t convince me at all.
I should like that my wife and daughter go to church, but they don’t, and I have a pretty good feeling God wants them to go. I can wish till I’m blue in the face but that doesn’t mean it will happen. Also, I give thanks to God that I go to Church (I could add) more than my wife and daughter, but there not going. So, instead I just thank Him.
So, I don’t want to keep going on with this negative thinking. I should pray more for discernment if tongues is a gift for me. Instead let me share more of a hopefull story. That night, after my experience in the Pentacostal church, I was praying asking the Holy Spirtit if He wanted me to speak in tongues. Honest to God, my tongue felt like it was trying to push itself out of my mouth. I felt like it was on the tip of my tongue, trying to get out. I kept praying and my tongue was literally pushing itself. I felt a stirring inside me, but I didn’t know what to do. I let doubt creep in and I got scared, and probably because I was so confused over everything. I felt like I was having a spiritual experience and finished my prayer with thanksgiving. Until I got involved in this discussion I sort of forgot about it, but now all this tongues talk has got me thinking.
Could someone please respond to either or both parts of my post.
Thank You,
Ryan
