"Gifts of the Holy Spirit"

I have another question. Will the Holy Spirit give everyone the gift of tongues if they ask? When they told me everyone can speak in tongues at that church it bothered me. The reason I think that is from reading 1 Corinthians chapter 12. Forgive me if I paraphrase. There are different forms of service and workings but the same God who produces them in everyone. The Spirit give one person this gift, and the next that gift, and so on, including tongues. Then comes verse 11 “But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as He wishes.”

Then St. Paul talks about one body and many parts. In verse 24 he says "But God has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it, so that there may be no division in the body. He then prioritizes the importance of the gifts and asks if all individual members have all the gifts. Do all speak in tongues? The obvious answer is no.

Can the Holy Spirit give the gift of tongues to everyone? Yes! But, He distributes the gifts as He wishes. So, the real question is, Does He wish for everyone to have tongues? I don’t know. So, when I was told that everyone can speak in tongues I was thinking, “Do you presume to know the will of God?” If God doesn’t wish for me to have tongues there is no way I’m getting it.

They cited two verses out of chapter 14 to bolster there case that everyone can speak in tongues. Verse 5 "Now I should like all of you to speak in tongues . . . " and verse 18 “I give thanks to God that I speak in tongues more than any of you.” These verses didn’t convince me at all.

I should like that my wife and daughter go to church, but they don’t, and I have a pretty good feeling God wants them to go. I can wish till I’m blue in the face but that doesn’t mean it will happen. Also, I give thanks to God that I go to Church (I could add) more than my wife and daughter, but there not going. So, instead I just thank Him.

So, I don’t want to keep going on with this negative thinking. I should pray more for discernment if tongues is a gift for me. Instead let me share more of a hopefull story. That night, after my experience in the Pentacostal church, I was praying asking the Holy Spirtit if He wanted me to speak in tongues. Honest to God, my tongue felt like it was trying to push itself out of my mouth. I felt like it was on the tip of my tongue, trying to get out. I kept praying and my tongue was literally pushing itself. I felt a stirring inside me, but I didn’t know what to do. I let doubt creep in and I got scared, and probably because I was so confused over everything. I felt like I was having a spiritual experience and finished my prayer with thanksgiving. Until I got involved in this discussion I sort of forgot about it, but now all this tongues talk has got me thinking.

Could someone please respond to either or both parts of my post.

Thank You,

Ryan 🙂

Yes. I think that some people have a wall, or a block.

The difference is “praying” in tongues and “speaking”. Everyone can have a private prayer language. Not all are called to “speak” in the service in the form of a prophesy.

Why would Paul talk about wanting everyone to use tongues, if it were not possible?

The public use of “speak” is for the body. the prayer language is for the individual use of the believer.

You are right, of course. “but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one.” 1 Cor 12:6

The truth is that every believer receives all the gifts at baptism. The potential to express all the gifts exists because the Spirit indwells a person. Now, only the specific manifestation will occur that will give the best service to God, and the Body.

Ask yourself, does God want your spirit to be strong in the Lord, and the strength of HIs might? If you ask Him for the Holy Spirit, will He give you a rock, or a serpent?

Why not? 🤷

Are you saying that your wishing and wanting does not necessarily mean that you will receive gifts?

Better yet, don’t seek the gifts, but the Giver. Ask Him to fill you with his HS, and that your life will manifest whatever fruit that He desires.

Just let the Spirit use your tongue to praise God in the best way possible.

26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. 27 And he who searches the hearts of men knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Rom 8:26-27

The devil hates pure worship, and when our members (including our tongue) are yielded to the Spirit, he has to run! Of course the best method to keep the faithful ineffective is to fill our minds with doubts.

Please forgive me. I messed up on your quotes here.

I think it’s possible, but I’m not convinced his wanting it for everyone means everyone can speak tongues. Even more
