Gifts to Notre Dame plunged $120M during year of Obama’s appearance

Catholic World News (via Catholic Culture) reports:
Contributions to the University of Notre Dame fell by over $120 million during the fiscal year in which President Barack Obama was awarded an honorary degree. Several dozen bishops criticized the university’s decision during the months preceding the May 17, 2009, commencement ceremony, and an alumni group called for the withholding of donations.

During the July 2008 - June 2009 fiscal year, gifts to the university totaled $226,689,374, including $60,133,035 in government grants. During the July 2007 - June 2008 fiscal year, in contrast, gifts totaled $347,155,514, including $62,241,121 in government grants. Thus most of the decline in contributions was in private donations rather than government funding.
Naturally, this could be either as a result of the downturn in the economy or fallout from the lionization of Mr. Obama (or a little of both). It will be interesting to see if donations continue to fall off this year or if they pick back up to previous levels.
 
It should be reduced to zero. No one should donate to any Catholic-in-Name-Only college.

Hesbergh wanted Notre Dame to the the Catholic Harvard. So my guess is that if Catholic donations continue to fall off that he school will go hunting for donations from secular sources.

Well, if it were me, I’d disenfranchise Notre Dame as a Catholic university, and remove the priestly faculties and laicize all those clergy who were guilty of refusing to support and promote the Catholic faith. Then, it could be what it really is, a private, secular college.

One way to test that is to see whether donations to other universities dropped by similar levels. If Notre Dame is the only one that dropped that significantly, I would suspect all their controversy and negative publicity (Obama’s visit wasn’t their only issue) played a big role.
 
Maybe it wasn’t just Obama directly but other questionable actions surrounding that sick travesty. Has anyone heard of the 88 people who were praying the rosary at the time on campus who were arrested and are now being prosecuted to the full extent of the law?

Regardless of how you feel about the president being all for murdering babies, in this case there is not a level playing field because pro-lifers are being beaten down while demonstrably all other “protests” are encouraged. It is a college campus after all.

Makes me want to send my money elsewhere.

Sadly this is almost certainly due to the 2008-09 economic downturn. Presumably most of the donations for the June 2008 - July 2009 year were made before the eruption of the controversy about the Obama ceremony on 17th May.
 
Is it just me, or do the numbers related to the gifts to ND seem incredibly large? Seems much more like a business in the world to me…huge numbers imo. How much good can be done with that level of gift giving.

Yep I thought that too, but I didn’t comment on it earlier because I thought that’s just one more thing I don’t understand about how things work in the USA.

Thats the problem. if no one donates Notre Dame loses its Catholic Identity along with 96 other Catholic Universities wehich are controlled and infested with homosexuals and pro-abortion catholics in name only? homosexuals already own the Pope and his phoney bishops , their next move is to take over all educational facilities in Americathanks to obama and hillary clinton ,americawill soon be a Queer Nation

There is one thing in the U.S.A That’s easily accomplished , go to your computer ,click on ANY College or University,then click on Donors list, Welcome to big bucks??
 
Im not surprised, I wouldnt give them a penny. Of course if I had been the Bishop in charge on Notre Dame I probably would slammed a excommunication on the desk of the president of the University…but Im not and thats probably a good thing.
