Fair question I guess, but what do you mena by specifics? Every statement I have made has been well documented in the media. Many of the most conservative voices in America are speaking out against Gingrich. There are numerous accounts by conservative commentators, by people like Rove, Coburn, Scarborough, Will, Coulter and others.

Gingrich admits many of the charges but says that he is changed. Huh? That’s his strategy to fool us. I don’t believe it for a moment. violate your weddings vows twice by having affairs and discarding two wives. God save us from such a man who would make our president appear to be a travesty. Some people don’t seem to fret about such ‘personal indiscretions’ but I do - and millions of others also will once the campaign gets into high speed. What about being rejected by GOP House members after he became speaker, his $300,000 fine for ethical violations, his huge profits from lobbying (including Freddie Mac), his careless and often contradictory statements, his pseudo-intellectual approach to US history - well, we could go on and on. Do the research. I’ve followed Gingrich closely and view him as a disaster for the GOP. There are hundreds of specifics, but how can we begin to list them here on CAF?

**** The principal reason Gingrich has gone up in the polls is because all the other candidates seem to have alienated sufficient GOP voters to lag****, whether Bachmann, Santorum, Cain, Perry, Paul, Romney, Sad situation. Add to this Gingrich’s facility with language which impresses the less-informed. The best-informed see through it.

Personally, I think it’s dumb to bring up his marriages and Tiffany account. It’s too easy for him to fall back on his conversion/changed man, which I do believe, and people will be sympathetic regarding his marital issues. The Tiffany issue is just plain petty. He is a wealthy person, and people are not surprised or bothered much (except for the OWS nutters) that a wealthy person has a large credit line at an extremely expensive store.

He has plenty of vulnerability on his ability to lead and work with Congress. That’s what really matters with the presidency.

It is amazing that someone so hard to work with accomplished so much while he was Speaker, in addition to authoring the Contract with America that helped bring the GOP into control of the House, first time in forty years.

Obama won “moderates” because he fooled some voters into thinking that his #1 left/liberal voting record as a senator didn’t mean anything. And, voters got caught up in the historical nature of electing the first black president. Now, he has a record - and its a record of a liberal/leftist in terms of the healthcare program (had he tried to pass outright socialized medicine like he wanted, it would have been defeated or lead to an even greater shellacking at the polls in the midterms). He also has a leftist social agenda which is outside the mainstream. He will try to use his billion dollars (the party of the poor!) to smear the GOP nominee and hoodwink the voters into thinking he’s a centrist.

You are right on your analysis of the debates. Gingrich and his supporters are wrong to think they’ll “mop up” in the debates. All they are doing is raising the expectations for Gingrich and setting him up for a letdown. Obama can hold his own in two or three debates. The only way for Gingrich to really expose Obama would be if they had truly Lincoln-Douglas style debates which Obama would never agree to. Do the quotes you put around “right” imply that you think Gingrich isn’t really extreme right? While I believe that he is a conservative (and his voting record bears this out) I think some of his positions and actions could be called moderate.

Hi Ishii, I don’t know. Many Amercians say they are fed up with both political parties. If someone like a Huntsman won the GOP nomination rather than someone like a Gingrich, or ran 3rd party (someone like a Huntsman not Paul or Trump), assuming he or she could get into the general election debates, and on the ballots, and were able to get their message out, 2012 could be ripe for such a candidate regardless of their boredom level.

But if by socialist medicine you mean for instance something like what Canada and many other industrialized nations of the world provide for the care of their people, Obama never put such a plan onto the table. I know you think this is because there is an agenda to do it in increments. But what he said was while he perhaps would support single payer if we were a nation starting from scratch, the President said since we were not starting from scratch and our system is employer based, he opposed single payer. Obama IMO did not even fight strongly for a public option which is one of the criticisms I have had of him. Hardly has his healthcare program been socialist liberal leftist. Bernie Sanders’ ideas on healthcare I would perhaps pronounce as more liberal leftist. But certainly not Barack Obama’s.

Ishii, there will be debates between Obama and the GOP nominee. But I think a 21st century President of the United States has a bit more on his or her plate than 2 Senate candidates in Illinois did in the 19th century, for the President of the United States and Newt Gingrich to spend hours upon hours non stop in each of numerous debates to entertain Mr Gingrich’s suggestion. I don’t see why Mr Gingrich would think he needs them in the first place. Afterall as Roy said Gingrich has described himself as a blend of Thatcher and Reagan. I believe I’ve also heard that he has compared himself to a Churchhill as well. If the Presidential debate formats we have had for yrs worked just fine for the likes of George W in 2000 and 2004, for George HW in '88, and for Ronald Reagan for 2 terms, and Gingrich is a blend of Reagan, Reagan did just fine without LIncoln-Douglas debates. Gingrich will have plenty of opportunity as it is for instance in keeping with the thread, to tell the American people his choice for Secretary of State is John Bolton.

If you think Obama’s social agenda is outside the mainstream, I would submit the agenda of the extreme far “right” is also outside the mainstream. And no I use QMs because I don’t think the extreme “right” is right.

May be outside of what is mainstream for today’s American’s but right in line with the way things were supposed to be.

If we take the road the left want’s us to take then the revolutionary war was a waste of time.

I do find it interesting all those Republicans who have worked with him or know him and are speaking out against him, are simply being ignored by the base, and a pol and insider like Gingrich has them flocking to him. But how does the saying go? Politics makes strange bedfellows or something like that? But when a Romney gets only about 25% and so many of the rest have fizzled, I suppose they have to go somewhere.

Also a good post. Although what they don’t fret about in one candidate might depend on who the candidate is.
 
John Bolton is the complete opposite of what a diplomat should be. This circus…simply goes on, and on, and on. More than ever, as I look at the sorry set of Republican “rivals” on the other side, I am THANKFUL to have Barack Obama as President, and as a viable candidate for re-election. Mr. Obama: your heart, your values, and your basic decency are all in the right place. BUT…your hands are tied. Unfortunately they were tied by us, the electorate…when we failed to provide you with a Congress that you can work with. Bolton did not make the decision to invade Iraq and if you have evidence that he did please submit. The epithet “war monger” is easy to throw around…make the case please. “He lobbied for years…” ?? What does this mean? Lobby for whom…what? He is conservative and has expressed pro Israel sentiment…this makes him a war monger? If you are condemning Bolton because he seems to be of the opinion that we don’t need UN approval to protect ourselves or to act in our own interests…OK but you are condemning most of us who I think agree. With “World opinion” and 2 dollars you can buy a cup of coffee from Starbucks. I don’t throw the word “genius” around but I do think John Bolton is spot on.😃
