I realize that this is an old thread, but I just read this article in our local paper today, so I thought I’d share.

"Pet python may have been hungry when it killed Fla. child

ORLANDO, Fla. – The pet python that strangled a 2-year-old Sumter County, Fla., girl 18 months ago hadn’t been fed in about a month and had escaped its tank 10 times since its last meal - a road-kill squirrel, according to newly released documents.

Gypsy, the 8-foot-6-inch albino Burmese python, was most likely hungry when it escaped its terrarium and attacked Shaianna Hare in a crib, according to investigative documents examined by The Orlando Sentinel.

A review of reports in the July 1, 2009, tragedy show that the child’s mother and the mother’s boyfriend had kept the snake in violation of wildlife rules and apparently could not afford to feed it."…

What we need is an “incentive” program, aka, bounties.

$50 per python head.

Problem gone.

The government program of studying the program to death, does not seem to be working.
This sort of thing has been tried before. One city put a bounty on rat tails, and the result was a hundred unlicensed rat farms in ordinary homes. Obviously this increased the amount of rats around.

I realize that this thread is not new and the article below isn’t either, but I just came across it today and read it, so I thought I would post it. I am just aghast again at the negligence of the adults in this case. If they had had just one clue regarding safety, just one, that little girl might still be alive today. It is truly mind-boggling to me how careless they were on so many levels.

"Killer python crushed 2-year-old girl to death in her crib and tried to swallow her whole

…The snake, named Gypsy, hadn’t been fed in a month and escaped from the 200 gallon fish tank it was kept in just hours before the horrible attack.

Darnell had placed it into a mesh laundry bag with a hole in it and put it back to the tank, but the snake managed to escape again.

The tank was kept just 12 feet from Shanianna’s room, which did not have a door."

This is an excerpt from an article that I posted back in January. This didn’t have to happen. What were those people thinking?!

"Pet python may have been hungry when it killed Fla. child

…According to a death investigation by the state Department of Children & Families, Hare’s mother, Sheryl, was concerned about her daughter’s ability to care for her pet snakes, Gypsy and Dixie, a smaller Columbian red-tail boa.

Hare told a DCF investigator that a week before the python attack she offered to buy rats for the snakes because Hare and Darnell had neither jobs nor money. She said she also had offered to keep the snakes at her home or provide a sealed container.

The offers were rejected."…

I wondered what the outcome of this case was, so I did a search. I found these articles. The only positive in this entire tragic situation is that Florida now prohibits owning Burmese pythons and other large constrictor snakes. At least that might help protect other children from adults making really poor choices regarding this type of animal in that state.

"Couple found guilty in killer python case

BUSHNELL, Fla. – After deliberating for two hours, jurors in the killer python trial on Thursday found Jaren Hare and her boyfriend Charles “Jason” Darnell guilty of all charges in the death of Hare’s 2-year-old daughter Shaianna, who was strangled two years ago by an 8-foot-6 inch snake…

In the wake of the tragedy, the Legislature changed state rules to prohibit the possession of Burmese pythons and other large constrictor snakes."

The couple was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Yikes, the snake was 15.7 feet long and ate a 76 pound deer! It was big enough to have eaten a large dog or even a child up to about 7 years old or so!.

"Adult deer found inside python in Everglades
