Good for her!!! I only wish she had stated very clearly in her letter of resignation WHY she was leaving - but we all act in haste sometimes in the midst of a distressing situation. I think she did the right thing.

Yes… There are some complaints by others that the headquarters of the Girl
Scouts assist Planned Parenthood with monies from organizational dues…

Girl Scout Employee Quits, Not Allowed to Wear Pro-Life Shirt

Phoenix, AZ – The Girl Scouts, which have already come under fire for numerous links to the Planned Parenthood abortion business and having pro-abortion speakers at their recent national conference, are under fire again.

But equally if she wore a shirt which declared that abortion was ok, or that she was advocating a certain Presidential candidate, etc, that she may have been told she couldn’t wear it. There’s inviting speakers, and then there is wearing a slogan declaring that you advocate for a certain group. I’m not allowed to go to work wearing a political slogan, so neither should she.

What about proceeds from cookie sales? I just ordered six boxes from a team mate!

I know the feeling. We (my family) have ceased to support the Girl Scouts period. Now when I am asked to buy cookies I ask the parents if they are aware of what the organization does with it’s dues. Just IMHO.

IFFY, as the Girl Scouts parent organization ( World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts - WAGGGS) send a pro abort delegation to the UN.

And the keynote speaker at their National Convention is an open Proponent of Planned Parenthood ( and lives with her lesbian ‘partner’ who is a PP employee)

Yeah. A lot of work places do not allow employees to wear clothes or jewellry with “religious” or "controversial " slogans. I don’t agree with that rule, because we are supposed to be allowed to practice our religion freely in Canada. So why should we get told that if we wear a crucifix or cross to work that we might be “canned?” How much can employers who pay minimum wage expect from their staff? Should we be forced to completely give up our beliefs just to work in a place? I didn’t fit in at one work place, and one reason was because I practised Christianity openly.

So?

The BBC recently had a program which featured Nick Griffin, the leader of the BNP who is known to have links to the Ku Klux Klan and has links with neo-nazis. He was on a BBC program. Does that mean that the BBC has his views?

Using the same logic, having a speaker at their convention who happens to also be a PP supporter, does that mean that Girl Scouts are pro-abortion? It’s an issue facing the younger generations of the day so it should be talked about.

I think you’re comparing apples and oranges. Wearing a descreet crucifix necklace is different to wearing a huge t-shirt with a slogan.

I totally agree with you.

The workplace isn’t where you can show your political/religious views. Keep your mouth shut and save it for Facebook! 😛

Different employers have different rules. Unless you work at the same place, I don’t see how you can say that.
It may not be a rule, but it’s a good idea and common sense. Would it really hurt to keep quiet about your personal views at your workplace? If you don’t like what they do, quit and find another job.

I think it’s really unprofessional. I don’t care about my dry cleaners view on tax policy, just do your job.

Now you are comparing apples and oranges. The BBC is supposed to be a news group, not an organization of impressionable youth ripe for some propaganda machine. However, it would not mean that the Girl Scouts organization is pro-abortion if it had pro-life speakers as well. But we can get an idea where they are coming from by reading about their “core value”:
Embracing Individuality Is Our Core Value
… As a core value, diversity is a critical component of our volunteer, employee and governance systems. To reach girls from different backgrounds, we strive for a volunteer base that reflects this nation’s diversity. We have programs to recruit and retain volunteers from across our nation who have the ability and passion to positively affect the lives of girls in diverse communities. Similarly, we need access to the best employee talent that the nation has to offer. Accordingly, we seek diversity at all levels of our **employee **population, especially in its leadership. Our National Board Development Committee works to ensure that the Girl Scout National Board of Directors reflects the nation’s diversity. The board continually assesses Girl Scouts’ progress in promoting diversity throughout the organization. Local boards of directors and their nominating committees make similar attempts to ensure that their boards reflect the diversity of our society.
As we face a complex and rapidly changing 21st century, our nation needs all girls to reach their full potential. Over the course of their lives, the lessons learned in Girl Scouting will help girls contribute more to their families and communities as well as the nation’s workforce and leadership. We are proud of what Girl Scouting has done for so many girls across the spectrum of our nation’s communities. However, we need to continue to raise the bar and increase our efforts to ensure that girls of every background, racial/ethnic group, socioeconomic group and geography have access to the numerous benefits of Girl Scouting. girlscouts.org/who_we_are/diversity
If the Girl Scouts organization means what it says in this statement, why was the employee fired for having a diverse viewpoint? If the Girl Scouts organization really means what it says, it would “embrace” those with a pro-life message as well as the one espoused by PP. So where is it? If there is none, they should stop saying they “embrace diversity” as a value, core or otherwise.

Nevertheless, one has to wonder what the organization is doing by having speakers talk about sex in the first place. Don’t kids get enough of it in school? If they are Girl “Scouts”, they should go out and scout.

I completely agree. When you go to work, political views should be left at the doorway. You’re there to do a job. If someone asks you your opinion on a particular topic, then you should either A) Give the view/answer you’re required to do according to company policy (for example, if you’re a health professional when asked about what a healthy diet is, you need to answer according to health guidelines, not the fad diet you liked), or B) Give a very careful, level response or C) Decline to answer the question.

LemonAndLime does not have the authority to set every employer’s policy. Just because her employer doesn’t allow it, does that go for all employees everywhere? That’s what she is saying.

I do. :onpatrol:

Anyway, let’s flip this around. How many types of employers can you think of would allow you to wear a t-shirt proclaiming a political viewpoint that could be contraversial?

Ready, set, go!
