Well he just asked why he got a 15 minute lecture about his clothes, which he thinks are perfectly fine.

I suppose the rest of us care because we were asked to give feedback.

Why do you care that we care? (;))
I find it odd that a young man would be concerned because someone mentioned a dislike of his taste in clothing. It is still more curious that there are now three pages of people offering advice to the concerned young man.

Let’s say that you expressed a dislike for my clothing. I would politely apologize and then simply remove them. 😃

Anyone besides me curious as to what Dad wore to Mass?
I certainly am. He must have considered his own attire and coloring to be masculine, so I’d be interested to know what he went with.

Don’t reduce it to simple like or dislike. The father believes that this young man’s attire, or at least color is too feminine. That’s different from chiding someone for wearing a weird tie pattern or something. If someone told me that my clothing was too feminine, I would absolutely take notice, and see if there was any merit to the comment. A remark like that is incredibly rare these days because a whole lot of guys just don’t care, and have no proper knowledge of what is or isn’t appropriate.
A comment like that would not receive a second thought from me. I suppose that I am one of those people you refer to as not caring. You are right. I have not one ounce of care for what someone else thinks about the shirt I wear. I select a shirt. Look in the mirror. If I am satisfied, it gets no further thought under any conditions. 🤷

Uh what? Your username is Magickman, and you refer to “the girls” like they are separate from you, but you talk about the clothing as being what you wear. Forgive me if I am confusing your comment somehow.

I don’t think miniskirts are exactly modest.
Ever heard of sarcasm? 😉

Dad wore a brown polo shirt and jeans. Under normal circumstances I normally wouldn’t care what anyone thought of my clothes, but I really like this girl and I want her father to know I respect him and his daughter.

Hmmm…I imagine most of us on this board expected that he would have been all done up in a dark suit, white shirt, and plain tie. Perhaps he was a bit embarrassed that you were more dressed up than he?

You sound like a wonderful young man.

It’s more likely that he’s trying to assert dominance rather than being jealous or embarrassed. But you wouldn’t really be able to tell without seeing more interactions.

I cannot understand what the color of your shirt has to do with respect??

Do you have any offensive ink that shows outside of your clothes?
Eyebrow piercings?
Nose piercings?
Lip piercings?
More than one ear pierced?
Dreadlocks?
Shaved head with tattoos on your scalp?
A Mohawk?
Hair that is dyed an unnatural color?

If you answered to NO to all of the above questions, the color of your shirt does not matter.

Thanks evryone for your replies and imput, The young ladies father apologized last Sunday, it was a heartfelt apology and I of course accepted 🙂

No matter what you wear, there will be critics. That goes for both men’s and women’s clothing. You can’t please all of the people, all of the time.

I wear a lot of denim, myself. It is inexpensive, practical, durable, and, I think, quite universal in its application. Yet, still, there are those who disapprove.

As we have learned in this thread, some people are very sensitive about what colors are acceptable for men.

The design, shape, style, texture, and configuration of garments are important to many folks. Some like currently fashionable clothes, others prefer classic styles, retro, cowboy, or even disco fashions.

You can’t please everyone, but you can please yourself. Whatever you wear, wear it with confidence and pride. More than anything else, attitude carries the day.

I am very much a free styler, when it comes to fashion. That means I can wear jeans out in the yard, shorts in warm weather, or a short skirt and tights for dancing. I am not tied to convention.

The women I date, are of an age, that few have living parents. Daddy doesn’t tell me my clothes aren’t right.

Bwhahahahaha!!! 😛

All this time I was expecting a suit! You were far better dressed than he was. 😃

Why would a guy wear a short skirt and tights for dancing?

“Why would a guy wear a short skirt and tights for dancing?”

Because I have the legs for it. I worked hard to get those legs. They look good in a short skirt and tights.

You’re a man! Unless you’re Scottish, why?

Back in the day, my father and I rode the guys my sister brought home pretty hard - but in a fun way. We would have definitely said something about the shirt and tie.

My guess is that this dad is just testing you. He wants only the best for his daughter. If I was the dad (my daughter is 13 and hopefully will not bring a guy home for a few years) I would want to see how you react in various situations. It seems like you did not argue with him - a good thing. You showed concern for what he thought - another good thing.

Watch out, football season is coming up. I hope you like the right team.

With just what you have written and the fact that you wrote it at all, you seem like a real keeper. Have fun!

Blue oxford shirt, (or polo) khakis, loafers…no where you can’t go. Take a blazer with you and leave a rolled tie in the pocket and you’re good no matter the situation.

Just remember that teenage daughters it’s God’s punishment upon us for being teenage boys!
